Suggestion

Actually, the dealer did a big favor for me: I was able to sell the car privately for $5,000 more than the dealer's wholesaler was offering and the dealer let me run the sale through the dealership so I saved about $3,800 on sales tax; plus I got $3,300 off MSRP on the new car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hi guys i have a 99 996,but seeing all the new 02 996 i am considering to trade in my 996 for a new one, especially the new c4s is there a great difference in performance? or should i keep mine and work on it?? any suggestion? <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

POST 2Original post

The trade in price for the 99-01 isnt so good. but if money isnt the issue then go for it.

POST 3Original post

I thought about trading my '99 c4 for a '02 C4S- but between the extremely low trade in value of the '99 c4 and the luxury tax payable on the '02 C4s, I could not justify the trade (a $20,000+ differential) - and I love the drive of my current c4.

POST 4Original post

As everyone said, prepare for the trade screwing. I bought a C4S and traded my '99 C2. Did average (IMHO) but I definitely feel like the car lost a ton of value. Sure is nice to have a new one with a new warranty, though. Mike

POST 5Original post

I too wanhted to trade in my '99 C2 Cab for an '02 Cab but decided against being ripped off by dealers! I think I would keep the car and wait for the V8 - when it arrives - and add to my collection rather than change. I have a different agenda. I am planning on owning the 1st generation of latest Porsches. Got 2.5ltr Boxster, now a 3.4ltr 996 so I would wait for the V8 99? Above all, they all drive nicely!

POST 6Original post

Depending on whether you mean street performance or track performance. If it's track performance I'd spend a few $k on upgrades to your '99. ROW M030 suspension or H&R coilovers, Kinesis rims, new exhaust (for sound, not hp!) etc. For a modest investment you'll take an already fast car and turn it into something that will rip up the track at your local DE's. There's always a newer and faster car in the showroom - enjoy what you have already! Just my .02 Ben btw - the '02 C4s caught my eye as well - but I think the next 911 I own will be a Turbo

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i really appreciate all the replies and i really like my 996 maybe i will keep it after all... i am very glad to hear that all of you guys think the dealers rip us off on trading in the old cars but what i hate the most is the sales that look down on customers... when i went to buy my 996 no sales bother to help me not even talk to me simply because i didnt go there in my suit... how do you guys feel?? how was your expereince??

POST 8Original post

I had a '99 C2 that I got in Oct. '98 and was a daily driver with 55k miles when I traded it in for an '02 cab ordered in July and delivered in Oct. I did take a big hit on trade in, especially since my new car came in right after Sept. 11 and everyone was pulling back (wholesalers included) on looking at high priced sports cars. Actually, the dealer did a big favor for me: I was able to sell the car privately for $5,000 more than the dealer's wholesaler was offering and the dealer let me run the sale through the dealership so I saved about $3,800 on sales tax; plus I got $3,300 off MSRP on the new car. That said, the '02 is definitely an improvement over the '99's. It has a lot more torque and a much firmer ride and sounds better. You didn't mention if you have a cab, but the glass rear window on the new covertible top is a real improvement over the old plastic. Finally, the upgraded stereo that comes with the Advanced Technics Package is also much better. I'll admit that I almost walked away from the deal when I saw what I was being offered for my '99, but in the end I'm glad I made the trade.

POST 9Original post

You can't blame the dealers for the low trade in. It's simply supply and demand. Me, I'm waiting to see what 2003 brings, and holding my breath as my waranty slowly fades into the sunset. The minor changes for 2002 are not enough to get me to trade. Perry

POST 10Original post

I wouldn't trade, the changes are not that great yet. Wait till the 3.8s, V8s and GT3s come then reconsider.

POST 11Original post

"i have a 99 996,but seeing all the new 02 996 i am considering to trade in my 996 for a new one, especially the new c4s is there a great difference in performance? or should i keep mine and work on it??" I doubt seriously (even considered it) I'd take the beating on my 01 to get an 02. Back when I was thinking about it my car was 1 year old with 6k miles and I was looking at about $20k back of MSRP for trade in. The main reason I was wanting to change was a color and option change. But I just couldn't find the value in trading - no matter how hard I tried to sell it to myself. Instead of taking the $20k hit, repaying lux, gas, and incremental sales tax, I put $10k into my car and it will kill a stock 02 on the track (and already have the Porsche HPAS stereo which whops up on the new Bose). While I think I'd probably like the better torque curve and sound of the 02, that's about it. I already have the 02 wheels and might even put on the 02 exhaust if I find it cheap. If though like you I had a 99, I might make a different choice, but I doubt it. I'll likely wait until they really change the powertrain. And, I'm strictly a cab guy. If there were a C4S cab out there, I'd probably make the trade if it weren't for the porky weight. But, if I had a 99 coupe and was wanting to stick with a coupe, I'd probably go for the C4S. It's a really georgous car and is a better performer than the 02 C2/C4 (which are themselves better performers than the 99-01s). "i am very glad to hear that all of you guys think the dealers rip us off on trading in the old cars but what i hate the most is the sales that look down on customers... when i went to buy my 996 no sales bother to help me not even talk to me simply because i didnt go there in my suit... how do you guys feel?? how was your expereince??" went in my typical garb - shorts, t-shirt, tennis shoes, and usually a day or two worth of facial hair growth :-) They didn't see what I was driving (just a BMW convertible anyway), and just handed me the keys to a new 996 with 7 miles. They didn't even ask to see my license, and no one went with me! That was the good part of the experience. When I actually ordered a car - YUK!

POST 12Original post

The feeling I came away with after driving an '02 compared to my current 996 : my next 911 will be a Twin Turbo , thank you.

POST 13Original post

MKW, I 2nd your words. Pre '02 996s are just fine. Porsche have only made the changes to the '02s - performance wise - that ordinarily we all have done on our '99s. Things like firmer suspension/better handling, better breathing/increased performance, neater alloys etc. My 99 C2 Cab is just as I like it. Besides, I do not want to keep up with the Jones latest everything etc. Best to wait for the V8s or, please God give Porsche a shove in the back to allow this to happen, a Turbo Cab! Now we are talking.

POST 14Original post

What it comes down to IMHO is does the 02 model provide a significant upgrade in power/torque and cosmetics. I would doubt it would be a large improvement but definitely an improvement over previous models especially the engine displacement which from what I heard can handle more power gains then with the 3.4 with aftermarket mods which I'm still waiting to see whats out there. Definitely trading up for one you definitely will take a hit on the '99 but if money is not an issue and if you think the 02 is more significantly better then the previous models then I go for it. I have a '99 996 myself and I love the darn thing. But if I trade in next time I go for a turbo. Regards. Mike
