My
Cayman
has the standard gauges. I wish It had a different set up. I NEVER look at the speedo. The digital readout on the tach is perfect. No need to ever look at the tiny numbers on the analog speedo. Why didn't they put oil temp and oil pressure in the spot? Both of those are info I would really like to be able to see.
Americans are dumb and will take the car back to the dealer if they see a needle move other than the tach or speedometer. This forum would be flooded with "My oil pressure is <x> is that okay?" threads.
Do other countries have those gauges?
I recall reading a thread by someone who installed a
911
gauge cluster into a
Cayman
or
Boxster
. You might want to search for that thread.

I have always had exactly the same thought. And all the info you want is running on the CAN bus anyway. So adding this necessary gauges is not that difficult or expensive. Oh, well...
There are interfaces with the CAN bus that can show information on your phone. I tried that for a while and it was kind of fun. One of the interesting things to watch is coolant temperature. The existing Porsche gauge lies so as to not worry people. During warm-up period the Porsche gauge shows getting up to temperature sooner (i.e.: shows 175 F when temperature is till 160 F, for example). When up to temperature, the Porsche gauge never shows anything other than the 175 F; going up a long hill, the car would actually get to 200 F but the gauge is still pegged perfectly at 175. In daily driving I only once managed to get the Porsche gauge to read high (about 215, if I recall) when going up a very long and steep hill. Alas, I didn't have the phone hooked up at that time.
Can you detail/link some of these interfaces? For example, I'd love to find one that shows oil temperature. I understand this is read by the CAN bus. I have an OBD2 scanner and it can't see it... so I'd love to find one that does.
Interesting info on the coolant temperature. OBD2 does show that - I should take a look and see what happens on my car with respect to the gauge...
No problem on the CAN issue... I've been looking, so I was surprised to see it existing. Haven't found it yet either, but if anyone knows of a setup that does this, I'd love to hear about it!
Also, today on the way to the shop I was able to watch the coolant temperature relative to the dashboard gauge. As reported by
@SunnyvaleCA
there is a discrepancy for sure. While warming up, the gauge hit "175" on the dash when the temperature was actually about 15-degrees below that (according to OBD data). That would be fine by me if it stayed consistent, but then the needle stopped at 175 even though the OBD data showed up to 190. So, yeah, as noted... the dash gauge is filtered in some way (probably dumbed-down for consumers who would complain about true-readings, even if they are safe and correct).
I wonder when the dash gauge would rise beyond this - I'm guessing the ECU is probably just delivering a signal to show "it's fine" and then will jump to HIGH when the temperature hits 250 or something? Some other cars do this as well - they provide a "gauge" even though it's connected to a switch (they seem to love to do this on oil pressure switches, which are set at 1psi, but then connected to a gauge... so stupid.)
We've done a few of these as a secondary dash:
We have billet mounts that go in the center vents to mount them:
