I found a 987 box the pretty close nearby. It's a private sale and I was just hoping I could get a Carfax run on it. I know some people here work for dealers and can run them unlimited. I was hoping maybe I could score a deal or even pay a few bucks.
If anyone can help just send me a PM. Thanks in advance
Carfax is known to monitor automotive forums looking for violations of their service terms. One of the terms forbids using their services except to the corporation or person paying for the services. IE - no "sharing".
When they find violations such as being asked to get a free Carfax - they tend to sic the lawyers on the forum owners for allowing this to happen. SO - most forums (I'd assume this one) have rules against asking for free Carfaxes.
If you're serious about buying a 987 it would seem that spending less than the cost of a passable dinner on a Carfax isn't terribly expensive. A bit of searching will likely turn up a multi-car-search deal making it even cheaper. If the car is located at a dealership they likely do have Carfax or Autocheck (or both) accounts and should share what these turn up with a prospective buyer unless it's so awful they don't want you to see it - in that case, RUN AWAY RUN AWAY!
Good luck in your search.
Sorry, I didn't not know that nor was I was looking to get anyone in trouble. I've been discouraged by prices at big dealers and smaller localized ones. Not to mention Bring a Trailer or Pcarmarket. Great places but the prices are crazy. Most of them, if not all have offered a Carfax or Autocheck which is great. I'm now more focused on fsbo's and ordering a report for every car I consider would start to get pricey. There's a reason I'm looking at nearly 20 year old Porsche's. I'm aware of pontential maintenance costs and can afford what I'm looking for. I don't need the preaching my others that maybe this isn't the car for me if I can't afford a Carfax. I like a deal and pay it forward the same way in my line of business.
I'm not saying you're accusing me of this just fending off future posts. I appreciate your reply.
Carfax access can be purchased for x number of times by anyone, as far as I know. And in fact I was able to get a car fax of my own car for free after someone on this very site offered free access, using their paid for subscription, because they no longer needed it. Nothing illegal about that as far as I can see. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

If you read the entire agreement you'll find that the person purchasing the subscription is subject to claims against them by Carfax to be settled in arbitration. It isn't "illegal" but it is a violation of a contract. Taking money to do a Carfax for someone certainly violates the "may not resell" terms.
Will that ever happen? Unlikely - costs them too much to get the lawyers worked up.. but it doesn't keep them from threatening the forum owners with condoning the behavior, so it's better not to ask. If someone offers to provide a lookup for free and you buy them a 6-pack to thank them that might be a different thing.
