It will, but it won't work as you'd expect. Not in a bad way, but I am not sure what the effect on back pressure or sound levels is. I know you can happily put 996.2 on a 996.1, but something is not quite right the other way round.

There are many internal baffle arrangements and routing's. Some are routed differently some are routed the same but use a baffle plate and are packed with wool others use a multi drilled tube -no wool. Then there is the different baffle routing's to consider.The pip on the top side will not release much flow on the early types but on the later type it will (bypassing for PSE sounds) I am sure they will all fit but just don't sound or weigh the same. The saving grace for all us 996 owners is that when all the 996 cans have rotted away and the new replacements reach extortionate prices is that the 997 cans can be adapted for our cars. However these are badly made and will not last very long at all but they do weigh considerably less. Get a pair under your bed in readiness. I have. (well one for strarters) I have a pair of c4 cans on my c2 at present so it works without any mods at all. Ive open a few up types and the best by far is the C2 early origanals but sadly they are all getting pretty coroded by now. I hope this helps.

I'm sorry moss, I read your post as pre-facelift vs post-facelift mufflers. In which case my first reply stands, however, if they are both post-facelift (3.6) then they are completely interchangeable, irrespective of C2, C4. There is no difference. Afterall, the mufflers know not what happens forward of the gearbox, nor do they care!
