The car does not use much oil, but when the reading was back up to the top, and stayed there, I eventually checked the dipstick.
Leading evidence: 'Check dipstick' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dipstick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I always check my level after a run and make sure that I'm parked on a hard level surface.

The digital display is suplementary and should not replace period checking of the conventional dipstick.

Suggestion
As for filling, always check and fill when cold on C2/C4 (ie anything not Turbo or GT3 related, which annoyingly have no dipstick and need checking when the engine is fully warm).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
When you turn the ignition key (but without starting the engine) some of you with 996's will know that the car computer does an oil level check. Mine has been reading semi full (perfect) until recently. Now it reads full.
Needless to say I have been keeping an eye on it. The car does not use much oil, but when the reading was back up to the top, and stayed there, I eventually checked the dipstick. The oil is only just in the bottom dot on the dipstick gauge. I filled up the oil with one small can of oil...
I had recently been smelling what sounds like slipping clutch plates. The engine does not smell like that anymore. There has been no performance difference but I am concerned:
1. That i might have damaged the engine driving wth so little oil, and
2. That the engine oil level 'checker' is faulty.
Is there any way of checking this, or any way of resetting the meter? Also is there a likelihood of damage to the internal components, given the smell but given there was still oil in the engine.
Any thoughts much appreciated! :?

Interesting questions Henry.
I'll be waiting for answers too as I'm starting to distrust my electronic display.
I always check my level after a run and make sure that I'm parked on a hard level surface. I turn the ignition off and the back on again and normally have to wait about 40 seconds.
Lately (and, coincidentally, since my OPC changed the oil 500 miles ago)the readings have been varying by up to 3 'bars'. They're always between the middle and top so I haven't been too worried by it but before the oil change it went down 1 bar every 600 or so miles and I topped it up whenever it got down to two thirds.
The pressure seems ok and it doesn't leak.
Any thoughts anyone?
The digital display is suplementary and should not replace period checking of the conventional dipstick. (on nonTurbo/GT3 996)
It is not ideal to run at the minimum (particularly if you are stressing the engine by racing ie high rpm and high g forces on the sump).
However, it is called the minimum as it is still (just) adequate.
In a failure case the warning symbol/indicator on the dash will flash.
If this hasn't happened, it should be OK.
As for the digital meter gremlins, the sensor is known to fail on occasions or for the connections to become lose.
If it has failed it costs about £35.
As for filling, always check and fill when cold on C2/C4 (ie anything not Turbo or GT3 related, which annoyingly have no dipstick and need checking when the engine is fully warm).
