While driving home after the new battery was fitted I was expecting the battery guage to read 14 as it has done during the two plus years that I have owned the car but it was still showing 12.
Leading evidence: 'extermely useful and valuable tip' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'extermely useful and valuable tip' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install i was expecting the battery guage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The Regulator Unit is being replaced next Wednesday along with a service and MOT.

As the indy says, it is most likely the alternator regulator diode pack.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

The battery guage in the dash normally shows 14 was showing 12.Halfords said that they would replace the battery free of charge but I decided to pay £25 extra for a Bosch Silver HSB096 with a five year guarantee.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just got back from three weeks holiday in Tenerife yesterday and tried to start my car this morning.I left the car for the three weeks with the alarm off and unlocked as it was in a secured garage and when I tried to start it there no lights on the dash just completely dead.
I called the RAC and after charging the battery they put on a tester that said the battery failed the test and I needed a new battery.
As the battery was purchased from Halfords just over a year ago with a four year Guarantee I drove the car to the store. The battery guage in the dash normally shows 14 was showing 12.Halfords said that they would replace the battery free of charge but I decided to pay £25 extra for a Bosch Silver HSB096 with a five year guarantee.
While driving home after the new battery was fitted I was expecting the battery guage to read 14 as it has done during the two plus years that I have owned the car but it was still showing 12.
As I had booked the car in for a service and MOT at my local indy for next weekI rang them and they said it was either the new battery needs charging or the Regulator behind the Alternator needs replacing.
I would be grateful for any opinions on the above.
Thanks in anticipation.
If it is only reading 12v when running, then the alternator isn't charging. As the indy says, it is most likely the alternator regulator diode pack. When they fail it causes the battery to drain, so that's probably what your original problem was.
You can replace the regulator - it is a Bosch part, and about £25-ish. Part number F 00M 145 350. There's quite a good DIY here:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/pors...-alternator-repair-regulator-replacement.html
I've read this link just out of interest and what an informative, well structured write up it is.
One point to notice here - the diode pack (rectifier) and regulator are two separate components. Going back to my auto-electrical engineering days, (incidentally is quite a long time ago!) most alternators (as opposed to dynamos) generate a 3-phase AC waveform utilising a total of 9 diodes for DC conversion (6 for rectification and 3 for protection).
I'm making an assumption here that the protection diodes are housed within the Regulator and brush housing. If they're part of the Rectifier Unit, that will require changing too.
Just a thought -
Further to my post/reply above. If it was my car with the 12v running charge and flat battery after 3 weeks, in the first instance I'd be changing the Regulator Unit as advised.
Hope you get it sorted easily.

Thank you
I just wanted to thank you for posting, what turned out to be an extermely useful and valuable tip. I followed the step by step instructions and fitted my new regulator today 8) The charge is now 14v and is running smoothly
Thanks again
