For those interested, I just checked the dimensions of the rear trunk to validate whether the car can hold cases of wine I am pleased to report that the rear will hold at least four cases of wine (loaded on their sides with two cases sitting atop the engine compartment).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Has anyone else noticed two pieces of clear tape/film about 1-1/2in square along each side of the rear lid opening, (when opened, obviously)about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom? My guess is that there may have been a squeak or rattle along the lid, and this is a spacer or filler in order to correct it. I've not noticed any noise coming from the rear end (other than that wonderful exhaust sound). I was tempted to remove it, because, who wants tape on there car? I'll post a photo of it if I get a chance.

POST 2Original post

Hey Kman-Went, No such tape on my Cayman , and the like you, I've noticed no rattles or odd noises in the car. For those interested, I just checked the dimensions of the rear trunk to validate whether the car can hold cases of wine I am pleased to report that the rear will hold at least four cases of wine (loaded on their sides with two cases sitting atop the engine compartment). Spring in wine country has just become enen more of interest.

POST 3Original post

I am going downstairs right now to check, be right back...............................................................YEP! It is there but not on the lid itself, you must mean on the body of the car. I will go take a pic of it. It is exactly as you have described it, but not on the lid. Russ

POST 4Original post

Here are the pics, but it is very hard to see. This will give the rest of you the location if nothing more. But look real closely! Is this what you are talking about? I hope!

POST 5Original post

K-Man Went, I'll bet Scully was looking in the wrong place. My hunch is it is there for just what you said rattle or noise abatement. How did you find that? I thought I knew every inch of that car! OK others, do you have it or not? Russ Out

POST 6Original post

Thanks Russ, yes thats it. I noticed it when I was washing it on Friday. I'm one of those anal retentives who have to clean the door jambs each time. My neighbor thinks I'm an idiot. Any idea on why its on Russ' and my Caymans ? If its not on all Cayman 's, then why not? The Mystery Tape!!! Perhaps it contains a microfiche with secret messages!!!

POST 7Original post

It is supposed to be there, check your car doors you'll find some there too! ( Porsche has been using this for awhile, not new to the Cayman )

POST 8Original post

Yes they are there on every car. If you look up...........at the boot lid, you will see that there are 2 rubber 'bumpers' attached to the lid. These clear pads are there to stop these rubber blocks rubbing through the paintwork. So DO NOT remove them. These are the same rubber bumpers and clear patch that can cause the hatch to squeek when the car is loaded tortionaly (when one rear wheel drops down a pot-hole/mancover). These will need a little grease on them from time to time to stop them squeeking together. Jack

POST 9Original post

Ah ha! I was not about to remove them, they look quite purposeful. Learning something new abou this car daily. Russ

POST 10Original post

I was looking at the car with a friend. Ferrari owner and and a real detail guy. He noticed them before I did and commented on the attention to detail to keep the paint from abrading. Nice little touch.
