Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I’ve always liked these but don’t see many out in the wild anymore. Used to be a regular sight at events and trackdays but less so now. I think the production numbers are 1868 total of which 308 were RHD. 106 were C16 U.K. spec (including 28 Clubsports).
According to how many left there are 96 registered with only 33 licensed. Presume this includes all 996.1 GT3s though, LHD and RHD?
That seems really low. I know a few have sadly been written off and lots seem to be in storage. Any owners on here use theirs regularly?
Mine is sorned for the winter.
I think those figures will include the LHD cars of which there will be a few.
Agreed that few are now seen at trackdays ... hasn't the GT4 taken over that role (also from the 964RS and 993RS ?)
You are probably right and I know the GT4 has for you! Do you still use the car much when the roads are clean? I'm keen to avoid the salt but a little water never hurt anyone.
In the last 12 months my LHD 996.1 CS has done two trackdays where it got to Snet and Bedford on a trailer and has moved from one storage place in Kent to another storage place in Central London under its own steam. It got a service in between, but again it was on a trailer to get there and back.
At 37k miles, any additional boring road usage is almost sacriligious...
Made the mistake of using it all year round for two years in the past, and while no damage was done, the once pristine underside will need dry ice blasting to be brought back to what it once was... Water is ok, but Winter grime is something else...
My neighbour has one of the 28clubsport cars. Its silver and a uk rhd. He hardly ever uses it. I thought the folding buckets in my 981 spyder were cool but those seats in his 996 are epic!

They are easily the most comfortable bucket seats ever fitted to a car. Not the prettiest, but a triumph of design and functionality. Little wonder they sell for stupid money in the used parts market…

Very nice. Would be great to have one of the Clubsports, such lovely cars. I’ve been to view a couple over the years but both cars had some issues which I wasn’t comfortable with. I also missed a lovely yellow CS with K400 kit which would have been my perfect car!

The very same yellow K400 is tucked up in my garage awaiting it’s BBS LMs .( if they ever make it to these shores)

I live down a farm track which is very muddy when wet and once the roads have been salted it seems to hang around as a white mist for a long time when dry ... so I use it in Summer.
For the first time this autumn I sorned it ... and servicing and MOT are obvious costs, but it is a very special and lovely thing. It has a simple old-school feel with no frills but top quality and really built for purpose.
No electric mirrors, electric boot and engine cover, or fly by wire throttle .... and it feels like the clubsport seats are a bit narrower, rather like the 964RS NGT nomex seats were narrower than the leather seats in the lightweight ... ??
I stupidly sold mine to Paragon last summer, it sold within a week and I’ve not seen it anywhere since. It’s a fully sorted car so hope it’s being driven!
I believe that these cars will be seen by collectors as the equivalent of the 2.7RS ...
The '74 and '75 2.7 Carrera were essentially the same car as the 2.7RS comfort, but have no-where near the same collector value. They were even a better car with the cast aluminium rear suspension members, but the first is the first and the 996.1 GT3 was the car that homologated the GT3 Cup and R.
The CS was the RS of the day, as the R was the RSR.
There is a purity of purpose to every homologation special ... every one is a bit of a bitsa ! But they proved the market and the rest is history ... all IMHO of course ...
I do miss my CS 996.1
Full cage
had a couple sets of wheels so I could run semi slicks for track and Mich PS for daily use :-)
taught me a lot about the dynamics of the car - minimal aids
My LHD is on the road.
It gets out on clear days like today. Just coming up to 40k miles (after 18+ years of ownership).
Fits like a glove, can drive the pants off it, can use all the revs without getting to silly speeds.

I agree - I think the 996.1 CS will surpass many of the GT3s (actually all GT3s and most post 997 RS cars as well) that followed over time in value terms / appreciation.
They have gone up quite a bit already - just checked and the cheapest CS I saw on mobile.de is c 120k - about double of a few years ago and hardly any for sale. If I bought cars as investment (or plainly just had cash ...), then I would get one to drive a few k per year in sunny weather. One of the few cars I don’t think is overvalued atm
Like so many cars now the value has gone up so much most are tucked up hardly used.
Such a pity the prices are over double when I had 2 996 GT3s
I would have another if I could only afford one.
Agree the CS is a rare beasts
Yes I would have my old Mk1 CS back. Perfect spec with the only real options being the leather dash top, climate and body coloured centre console.
Sold to Henry Slippy so that’s the same car above wearing BBS wheels and his Reg number.
Same old pic. I should have taken more.
To be fair there weren’t many of mk1 to start with, and some had been written off, exported etc, plus it’s winter.
I see quite a lot of Mk2 on track and at shows; the Mk2 scene is quite active considering there are only 200 odds cars (plus exported / written off etc), so well done us!
Mine is hibernating but will be out again in March.

Looks stunning
My pal had one of those 28 .1 club sports, in black - it was the first 911 I was ever in, never mind drove … I couldn’t believe how good it was to drive, from that moment I really wanted one but the price was a bit much for me ….. though I probably spent that amount on my DC2 track prepping it over the years! With him driving, I just couldn’t believe the speed we were cornering and how confident it felt. He is a very experienced driver
If I shut my eyes I can still remember driving and how hideously awfully beautiful that idle was on the lightweight flywheel - the way that bag of bolts turned into such a high end was wonderful
He offered it to me at a reasonable cost when he was moving on to his next car - wish I had the foresight to buy it

What a cracking car, wish I bought it now.
This looks very nice but a bit pricey. Presume there is usually quite a bit of prep in these cars before someone like Paragon will retail it.
Anyone on here know the car?

Mate might be selling his Ex Richard burns car, half the mileage ,opc serviced and in great condition,Non cs,i would have thought similar money. It will be at C&M,if any interest.
Hairpin car looks nice but will be strong ask i would have thought.

More sensible priced and a lot of recent work done. This is the one I'd buy.
Looks nice, love the seats. Didn’t realise they were so mileage sensitive?

Hairpin car is a Clubsport, which now command a premium, mileage just adds to that premium.
The car Taffy has linked to is more useable and I’d suggest is sensibly priced, whereas the Paragon car looks a bit on the toppy side price wise.

I think with these cars it’s better to look at recent work and maintenance than mileage as Taffy above pointed out. Bills can be pretty eye watering.
Bills can indeed be chunky, but in fairness the advert states the following have all been addressed :
Suspension, radiators, brake discs and pads, have all just been replaced. Full service just completed at Strasse.
On the basis the car has a Miltek exhaust, there are no concerns over split exhaust silencers, which only leaves the possibility of a clutch replacement being needed, which at 70K miles and 20 years old doesn't seem unrealistic, though I'd be amazed if it hasn't had a clutch at some point in its life.

nice, it has a seatbelt in the back, would come in handy for using it with my dog

To give some mathematical perspective to the car above, 71k over 23 years is an average of just 3087/annum.
What does this have to do with the condition of a car taffy, its all down to condition of the car surely, rads and brakes etc are easily replaced, i looked at some right low mileage and high mileage munters for a friend.Big issue is tub corrosion, get the liners and panels off to see how well its been looked after.
Its easy to forget alot of these cars were track slags of the day, like the 964rs etc, great cars to drive.
Yep, rust is the cancer of cars and the number one issue to look out for. I douse all my machinery and farm pickups with Waxoyl on a regular basis and store every bit of machinery under a roof. Unless these 20 year old and older Porsches have been treated the same as my machinery then they will be suffering with some degree of rust, superficial or chronic.

Nice K400 for sale in the classifieds. Looks a bit OTT but bet it goes well!
That car was for sale at JZM about two years ago for £62k and 61k miles. I nearly bought it at the time but decided to invest in an Italian mistress instead
. Stunning car but a bit toppy price price compared to the other Silver one I showed above.

It really depends what you want the car for...
Eurotrips, jaunts up to Scotland or Wales - then yes, the 996.1 Comfort is probably the best bet...
Collectability - the Hairpin car - the 996.1 CS is still too cheap in the context of its historical significance for the brand.
Sheer driving fun - the K400 is head and shoulders above a stock 996.1 - the closest you would get to an early Cup car with number plates if executed properly...

Nice car, know it well. Completely repainted (well) had fxxk all money spent on servicing for the last 10 years so budget a good old refresh.
Was chatting to a friend earlier this week and he was interested in a RHD 996.1 GT3. There don’t seem to be many for sale at the moment and the couple on PHs seem quite expensive even for dealers. Anyone know if any good cars for sale?

for the price of that you could get a 997 Gen 2 GT3, far nicer in my opinion.

Hi guys
The maundrells Clubsport is my friend's car, its recently had alot spent on it just tidying up bit of stone rash on bonnet etc.

I guess he selling it to fund the big extension he currently doing.
If anyone wants me to put them directly in contact with him don't hesitate to ask.

I honestly can't figure out how they've derived that price...
Not when this lovely 18k miles 996 GT3 RS apparently just sold on CC for £139k
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2004-porsche-9...
Other than it having a full cage - a bit polarising - is there anythiong I do not/should know about this car? Otherwise, I'd say was a decent buy.

There is one at Porsche Leeds of which, considering the full cage commands £20k less (on average) plus nearly double the miles, coupled with CC commission, then it’s about right….for it to soon show up for sale with a dealer at £150k

No as the full cage eats into the dash and other parts get cut into.

No it doesn't. Go and look at the photos on the collecting cars site. Dash is untouched so it would seem there is just the mounting points under the (holed) carpets and the mounting points above the seats.

I'm afraid to say Julian, that James is talking from an area of low solar activity. No production 996 GT3/RS required any "hacking" of the dashboard to enable fitment of the front section of the cage.

lovely colour by the way. Made me want to see how many Orange 911's of all models are for sale and its only half a dozen!
Always strikes me as one of the best colours yet strangely rarely opted for.
Very much miss my speed yellow RHD 996.1 CS with a Manthey K400 which I owned from 2004 - 2016.
Recent bought by a track day enthusiast who plans on using it rather then locked away in a garage.
I loved the rattling sound on start up with the lw flywheel, the heavy but progressive clutch, the epic engine note and feelsome steering. I think she's done 63K miles now.
How much would you have to pay realistically for one of these now?

I came back that way from Mike’s once and forgot that 7 or 8 degrees in Macc might mean snow up on the top. Cup 2’s coped admirably.
Was heart in mouth all the way south to Leek.
