Firstly check the dipstick for water/emulsion cotaminatiom in the sump and also check for cross-contamination of the coolant in the header tank.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All I have a little issue!!I have had the car(Carrera 4S 2004) for about 8 weeks and I was topping up the oil last night and found a creamy froth in the oil filler neck! The water header tank is clean and hasn't moved a dropped! Do I have to start worrying that I have a head gasket issue or is this just condensation in the filler neck? Any Advise?? :?:

POST 2Original post

Condensation in the filler neck usually caused by frequent shortish journeys. Absolutely nothing to worry about and I think the majority of new 996 owners have experienced your concerns. Welcome to the forum

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Excellent thanks for that just put my mind at rest!!!

POST 4Original post

Welcome! As Dave says above, nothing to worry about, we've all been there!

POST 5Original post

Search for "mayo" on the forum. All the 911s get it - not just watercooled. You will get a million threads, you will also see it correlates with cold (winter) weather and short journeys. The water and oil vapour from the engine condenses as an emulsion in the nicely cold and distant outlying horizontal filler pipe. Having said that, this mayo can still be caused by a headgasket failure. Firstly check the dipstick for water/emulsion cotaminatiom in the sump and also check for cross-contamination of the coolant in the header tank. Make sure there is no water loss and the coolant is nice and clear - if the coolant has oil in it then you have a headgasket failure. If no water/emulsion in sump and no oil in coolant, then just cold weather/short run "mayo". Wipe off and drive faster and longer!
