Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If you want to check the mufflers, this is standard:
Leading evidence: 'Check mufflers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi
Is there any way of telling whether the car has PSE or not just by looking at it? I've noticed so far that o the C4S there are two different styles of tailpipe, the oval shaped ones and the figure of 8 sort of style. (Sorry for the rotten description.) Is this a clue or just an option? Also where is the PSE switch located?
Thanks
On the 996, from the outside there is no way of telling if there is a PSE unless you go down on all fours and have a look underneath the actual exhaust system where you would be able to tell the difference between the two. The actual switch is oval-shaped and located on the front centre console and looks like a switch for a double shotgun barrel.

Figure of 8 tailpipes can be bought from any OPC or try some of the after-market dealers such as Porsche Shop. Check on eBay - you might find a good deal on there.

The 'figure of 8' style tailpipes are standard on the turbo but can be specced as options on other models (I think - where's GT4 or Richard H when you need them?). They are genuine Porsche pipes, although as Maxie says you can get aftermarket ones too.
Best way to tell if the car has a PSE is via the button on the dash as the pipes aren't definitive (i.e. you can get the turbo-style 'figure of 8' pipes but not have PSE). Although I believe some people have PSE
without
the button, so...
Basically, start the car up and drive it; if it makes you grin like a footballer in a brothel, it'll probably have a PSE...
This is a 997 PSE switch, but 996 symbol is similar:
Porsche make all manner of exhaust tips spec'able from the factory or dealer supplied (as well as third-party/after-market offerings).
The tips just bolt on (a few examples):
If you want to check the mufflers, this is standard:
And this is (an early) PSE:
If it is a 996.1 (3.4 prefacelift) then you may be able to look through the exhaust cut-outs in the bumper and see this:
At the end of the day, it is your ears you need to use to tell if a car has PSE.
If you can't tell, it doesn't matter!
Just to make a small correction, the standard 996 Turbo tips and indeed the C4S were like these (a sort of triangularised-oval):
(not OEM, buts same shape)
As Ant Blain points out, you can have a retrofit PSE (either via OPC/OEM route or third party) without the button.
Howver, if you ar going down that route and aren't bothered about an OPC warranty, you would be financially much better off going down the Oettle (H&S) route.
