Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However, I don't agree you shouldn't clean it at all, or the logic in leaving, erm, leaves and such like to reduce the surface area on a high flow performance filter fitted for the very reason of trying to attain unrestricted airflow.
Leading evidence: 'Install very reason of trying' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean kit' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Also, cleaning opens the opportunity to damage the cotton gauss encased in the mess which you wont see, and that is an issue.

Suggestion
I don't see the harm in carefully tapping the filter to drop any larger/heavy debris like stones etc and using a Hoover with soft brush tool to carefully agitate and remove sticky or entangled debris.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a cone filter on my EVOMs CAI. I clean it twice a year or every 5000 miles. I know that's probably over kill but every time I clean it the dirt and other cr*p that comes out makes me think it's very worth while.
I use the K&N filter cleaning kit. It comes with a spray cleaner and oil. Follow the instructions. When oiling only spray the outside, I do a couple of passes very lightly so as not to build up too much. I then wrap it in kitchen roll ( the really absorbant type) and leave somewhere dry. Some people like to put newspaper inside the cone to soak up any excess oil also.
I actually have 2 filters so I rotate, that way 1 is always clean and more importantly has had plenty of time for any excess filter oil to dry or be soaked up...
IT'S VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO HAVE EXCESS WET OIL ON YOUR FILTER, IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR MAF SENSOR.
:thumb:
Just take it out, and brush and hoover it until you have done the 50k miles.
Easier and less like to stuff you r MAF.
To be honest I would err on the side of dry if anything.
IF you do oil it, use as little as possible. Apply evenly and finally wrap it up in newspaper or kitchen roll for 24 hours (or at the very least, a long "overnight") to wick any excess oil out.
dont clean it, it may look dirty but after living with these K&N filters for 20 odd years, DON'T CLEAN IT.
when new these items don't offer the best in filtration efficiency, however as surface dust builds up they become more and more efficient, and not until the dirt is around 3 - 4mm thick would you need to think about cleaning, really, even caked in 2mm thick mud and leaves they work just fine besides the area is so vast the air simply moves to another part if one part offers any resistance. Also, cleaning opens the opportunity to damage the cotton gauss encased in the mess which you wont see, and that is an issue.
Try and resist the temptation to clean.
Certainly I don't subscribe to the annual "washing" and re-oiling, and with care you could probably eke this out the full detergent/degrease cycle to once every five years.
However, I don't agree you shouldn't clean it at all, or the logic in leaving, erm, leaves and such like to reduce the surface area on a high flow performance filter fitted for the very reason of trying to attain unrestricted airflow.

This is good practice, as you can also Hoover out the airbox itself of any dirt or debris at the same time.
total agree, tapping, brushing out obvious debris no bad thing. Its all about the location of the filter as to how much and what type of debris it collects. On a Porsche the air flow is over the vehicle top therefore very little in way of stones and large leaves tend to arrive at the filter, if vehicle is parked under tree leaves would tend to fall in rather than sucked in.
On vehicles with side air flow like Lotus for example where you can actually see the filter and plenty of track/race cars their capture content is enormous
even direct spray from tyres can arrive at the filter mouth, but these filters still survive years of abuse due to their design which is a cheat really, meaning to offer maximum area without creating a filter 1m x1m sq. there are crumpled like a concertina into a mini space typically the trough's fill with dirt first and the peaks remain relatively clean for years.
So looking a Porsche K&N and thinking 'oh...its a bit black think I'll clean it' just don't, that black is helping and not in the least obstructing.
