well the screws i used are kinda rounded off so that they can only be tightened and not undone with a normal screwdriver,

The trick is to make sure both surfaces are clean (not dropping on the floor) and use a decent thick heavy duty waterproof pads.

not only did i have to replace the number plates and screwed them on with security screws (you can only tighten them !)

Being a bit fussy i then spent a while cleaning all the adhesive off both the body and the rear of the plate before using exterior heavy duty double sided tape.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Fishing line worked for me to slide between the body and the plate, doesnt mark the car at all and cuts through the old sticky pads.
Guys, got stopped by the Plod for dodgy letter spacings on my plates. So got some proper ones today and the front was a doddle. The rear however is a nightmare cannot see or feel any nuts that are holding it.HELP PLS.2001 turbo
You can use a peice of Dental floss to cut through the adhesive
then clean it up with WD40 or Degreaser before you put the new ones on.
I used
Heavy duty
velcro to stick mine one as I too have slightly
wrong spacing on a set of plates. Seems the police are getting a bit zealous
with the number plate thing recently as Dave has just been stung as well.

Fishing line worked for me to slide between the body and the plate, doesnt mark the car at all and cuts through the old sticky pads. Easy enough to get off. Being a bit fussy i then spent a while cleaning all the adhesive off both the body and the rear of the plate before using exterior heavy duty double sided tape. That was 24,000 miles ago, over 2 years and no problems!
hi there
a word of warning, i had my plates taken off my car,
not only did i have to replace the number plates and screwed them on with security screws (you can only tighten them !)
but a week or two later got no less than three speeding/red light jumping fines in the post
i contested all of them and they were dropped but was a major hassle all because the original number plates were stuck on with adhesive pads/tape
when i reported it i was told it happens ALL the time by the local police, and screwing on rather than glueing means the casual thief moves on to another car not yours
best of luck
tim
Can't see the logic in that. It's much quicker to remove my front screwed on
plate than it is to remove the stuck on rear one. A small electric screw driver
and job done with less risk of damage, get on the internet and you can buy
any plate without producing docs so why nick them anyway.

Crikey, I almost took either my fingers off or the PU when I tried to remove the rear number plate.
Some idiot had used four or five industrial strength 6mm foam double sided pads to put my plate on (I think it only suggested two on the packet). What was amazing was the fact the same idiot dropped the plate and naked pads on the dusty garage floor as I tried to line it up the first time and forgot I only had two hands. You can imagine my surprise six months latter when it wouldn't budge!
In the end I just had to wedge my fingers under one and slowly wedge the number plate off by ripping the high density foam pads.
Then it took twice as long to get the still fully adhered sticky off.
The trick is to make sure both surfaces are clean (not dropping on the floor) and use a decent thick heavy duty waterproof pads. If you use thin stationery type pad it will just fall off or get jetted off the next time you wash it.
hi
well the screws i used are kinda rounded off so that they can only be tightened and not undone with a normal screwdriver,
these are a special design and not normal screws, they are often used on lock mountings where the screws cannot be hidden
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/19677...Clutch Head Security Screw 10 x 1" Pack of 25
so if i had used normal ones you are right but with the security screws used does make more sense
and if you are an opportunist thief why would you BUY anything from the internet which might be traceable, instead walk down any road and find the first car with stuck on plates then rip off car, job done
these were the same as joy riders who dont even go out with a solid item to break a window and just pick up the nearest brick or stone to break in,
having a screwdriver would be "going equipped"
i am not saying that these were master criminals just if your car is harder to do the above, then the casual thief moves onto the next easier car
same logic as having a burglar alarm box on the wall of one house and not on the next, which one is more likely to be robbed! the casual thief will just walk to the next house.
best regards
