Mine needed replacement at about 60K miles, but it was not the clutch disk that wore out - it was the pressure plate.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I'm in the market for a 987 Boxster . I notice a lot for sale in the 60-80k mile range. Is this due to the cost of the impending clutch replacement? Please advise. Any tips would be appreciated as well.

POST 2Original post

Clutch life is totally dependent on the driver. It can be destroyed in one day or last well past 100K miles, even with spirited driving. I have never had to replace a clutch, some past 150K miles.

POST 3Original post

Ive driven several manual cars well above 100k on a clutch. I did have to replace my Cayman S clutch at about 65k miles. Bought the car with 6900 miles, so maybe original owner smoked it? I have read lots of guys replacing at around 60k though.

POST 4Original post

Mine needed replacement at about 60K miles, but it was not the clutch disk that wore out - it was the pressure plate. Several of the spring fingers had given up.

POST 5Original post

Clutches aren't that big of an expense with these cars and 60k to 80k miles for a 10-15 year old car is also not that many miles. That being said, the car will probably need more than just a clutch - water pump, brakes may be getting used up, AOS is probably read to go, O2 and MAF sensors might start going bad, cooling hoses starting to get dried up and brittle, time for new tires ( Michelin PS4s could cost up to $2k), engine and transmission mounts, etc.

POST 6Original post

Agree with lesmurray. However, if you can wrench at all the rotors and brake pad are really easy, oil is easiest of any car I've owned, AOS is a tight squeeze and a knuckle grinder but not hard, serpentine belt super easy, water pump is accessible, and so on. As for the clutch, did mine at around 60k (not first owner) and it was $2500 parts/labor. I'm at 107k on it and doing fine. I would put aside $3k-4k for any Porsche purchase for the 'surprises.'

POST 8Original post

My 987.1 had a rear main seal leaking and the clutch and PP were replaced at 39,000 miles.
