I am looking to buy a good diagnostics tool for my 08 cayman. What would be a good one to get and could it be used on Vw's? Can it be also be plugged to a laptop fro more drtailed datalogging?

I highly recommend Durametric, but it doesn’t work with VWs. It is designed specifically for Porsche.

Yeah, if you want detailed data logging, Durametric works pretty well, although the interface is not necessarily super intuitive, and they do not have a good reputation for responding to issues. Also keep in mind that the company has basically hacked into the Porsche control systems and do not have detailed info on what the various parameters mean. In any case, it works fine for me and I have no complaints. Last I checked it works only with Windows. There are multiple versions. I have the Enthusiast Version which works for a total of 3 different VINs. It costs somewhere around $300 directly from Durametric, but is available on Ebay with one or two VINs left. They are around $100 per remaining VIN, and once your 987 days are over you can sell it, so long term you should only be out about $100. If you simply want to reset your "service required" message, there are threads discussing cheaper alternatives.
