So on the way to work today the
Cayman
sputtered a bit on a hard acceleration, and the CEL flashed with the "GET THE CAR TO A SHOP, YOU IDIOT!" message. Pretty quickly, the sputtering went away, as did the CEL. When I got to work I plugged in my Durametric, and the following code came up:
C1503
Ignition coil "E" primary/secondary circuit
No signal/communication
I assume this means that one of my ignition coils/coil packs is going, so obviously the thing to do next is to get and install new ones. But before I do I have a couple very quick questions:
1. Any recommendations as to brand of coil packs? Yes, I know I could do a search. But I'm asking anyway.
2. How long do I have before the coil pack "E" completely dies? Not that I'm going to wait six months (or even one month) to do them; I'm mainly just curious as to whether I should just park the Cayman until the new packs come in or if I can keep driving it without too much worry for the next week or so.
I had mine sent
next
day shipping from Pelican Parts, I used Beru brand, exact same brand as
Porsche
OEM but about 1/2 the price.
I ended up getting the ignition coils from
Suncoast
(

). Per the link, they are:
I don't know exactly what that means, but I can tell you they had "Borg Warner" stamped on them.
Anyhoo . . . I put them in, and while I'm sure there's absolutely no difference at all, in driving the car it sure feels like there's an improvement. The job was pretty easy. Remove rear wheels / tires, remove a couple plastic panels, remove a heat shield, unplug coils, use a T30 to unscrew the coils, pull out old coils, put in new coils, and reverse the process. It also gave me a chance to give the wheels (both front and back) a really good wash and a Jet Seal application.
By the by - the ones I pulled out were Berus. I have almost all of the maintenance history on the car, and I didn't see any indication that the ignition coils had ever been changed. The plugs, OTOH, have been changed out three times (most recently in April 2019 @ ~57,000 miles; there's now 61,400 on the odo).
