I like what Rolls Royce used to do - test drive their cars with a little guy in the trunk with a mallet & fastners.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I had some problems with the box itself rattling, I fixed it by placing a couple of rolled washcloths along the sides to make for a tighter fit.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I spent 10 hours on Sunday constructing a sealed custom enclosure that houses 2 JL Audio 8 inch subwoofers in the space between my rear seats and rear deck. They sound amazing but parts of the car are rattling at high volumes, especially the rear exterior quarter panels between the doors and rear wheelwells. Has anybody else tried something like this? Is there any other option out there besides dynamating? Thanks in advance, John.

POST 2Original post

You can track down each & every resonance mode and "fix it". Sometimes this is dynamat (or similar), sometimes sealing foam, tightening specific fixtures, etc. etc. It takes patience & help, & can be very frustrating (fixing one source chases the energy to another mode-site). In the so-called high end audio biz, competition cars can be so laden (leaden?) w/ damping material (inc. concrete) that they were 1000 - 2000 lbs above "curb weight" and completely undriveable ("for listening purposes only"). I like what Rolls Royce used to do - test drive their cars with a little guy in the trunk with a mallet & fastners. Those were the days.

POST 3Original post

Sounds similar to the box that I had built for my 996 (minus the rattles). I had some problems with the box itself rattling, I fixed it by placing a couple of rolled washcloths along the sides to make for a tighter fit. Other than that the system is remarkably rattle free, even at higher volumes. Not bad for a 99 model!! Perhaps tune the bass down a bit.
