Ok 97% replaced them... We threw on a short shift kit at the same time and I cannot get the last connection the shifter, the open ended left side of the
numeric cables
will not slide over the connector no matter what I try. I figure I'll call them on monday and see if they have any suggestions, or go to our backup plan of slightly shaving it down with a
dremel
.
Overall the install wasn't too bad. Getting the center console and everything out took maybe an hour. Routing them was pretty easy. The biggest pain was getting the cables of the levers at the transmission, holy crap that took us a lot of swearing and sweat. Eventually managed to pop them off with a pretty decent putty knife and a lot of effort. Getting the cables out of the little clips holding them in was a real pain too. The new ones went in much easier but we had a rough time figuring out how to get it into reverse to properly adjust them. For anyone else ever attempting this, the trick is to pull back on the passenger side lever while also pushing towards it from the lever on the other side. Just grabbing the passenger side lever and trying to pull was fruitless to get it into reverse.
Now we just need to get that last connection on and we're set. Well and put everything back together... But we got the cables on enough to give it a little feel and the short shift kit is quite nice, impressively short throws, and overall things feel a lot less sloppy than with the OEM setup.
Getting it all ready!
The broken culprit, you'd think for the price of these cars they could use a little beefier cable!
I just did this job on my 987.2 S 6-speed with factory short shift. I also had some difficulty getting the left side cable back onto the shifter. What I did was to put a little grease on the shifter, remove the shifter to gain access to the mechanism and 'press' on the cable end by carefully using channel locks. It is a tight fit. YMMV.
I had no trouble moving the shifter levers back and forth to adjust the cables like in the Numeric video. I had left the transmission in neutral before starting the job, but I don't know if that helped or not.
The numeric cables really restore a precision feel to the shifter. Good luck.
nice work! Where did you buy the cables from?
I found the same thing if I just tried to pull the right side lever back through the detent. However, if I started from the neutral position and gave it a good jerk backwards (like a swift motion rather than moving it to the first stop and steadily pulling) I found it was pretty easy to get it to go into reverse.
