Given that the 718 may still prove the best car in its class AT THE PRICE, I suspect many, whatever their current stance, will accept (albeit with some regret) the inevitable.

The 981 interior seems great and the looks are good but I am still not convinced it's better than the 987 when it comes to driving.
To see who likes the idea (or not) of the new Turbo Flat 4 in the 718. Thought it'd be interesting to split it by previous owners and people who've never had one to see if there's any difference.
I'll reserve judgement until I drive one.
Defo a nice daily proposition imo. I personally wouldn't buy one as I prefer sports cars for weekends. At least with a daily you can dump it any where. Sports cars should look pristine and be driven hard imo

Stop being pedantic! If someone asked you which you would prefer, a 918 or a LaFerrari you'd have an answer despite the rather slim chance you'd get to drive either yourself to make a "real" decision.

+3 - it tells you how many have preconceived views, so not totally meaningless. That said I very much doubt that PH posters are typical of Porsche buyers. And it does suggest that the yes/wait and see posters are rather less vocal than the nay sayers.

Agree. It's not a life and decision you're being asked to make. It's just gathering an early opinion about the new direction of the 718. I can tell you now, I have absolutely no interest in swapping my 987 Spyder for a 718. The 718 is just not what I want from a prestige sports car purchase.
Porsche's latest generation of sports cars just not doing it for me I'm sorry to say. Four cylinders, nothing without a turbo and styling that seems to get more and more "fussy".
My next car will still be a Porsche but I won't be troubling the order books of my local OPC for the foreseeable future.
I'm sure they will get glowing reviews but I'm not interested in swapping my 987 Spyder at all. Each new generation of Porsche cars seem to have more capability but less soul...shame.

I'm not being pedantic. I already said on the other thread, I drive an old 986 and I don't have 50 large to go and drop on a new 2 seat roadster. However if I did, and the 718 drove and performed as well as the figures suggest, I'd probably buy one, as at the end of the day I'm a Porsche fan.
Yes I'd lament the loss of that growl to howl every time I really buried the throttle, and no doubt that lovely induction roar from a de-snorked car too. But I'm very unlikely to get the hump so much with Porsche that I go and buy a BMW instead.

I currently own a 981 Cayman S and it is my first Porsche - if I were to answer the poll right now it would be "I've had a Cayster: Would not buy a 718 T F4" but based on what? It would be all of the feedback I've read on here and other forums, from the more experienced Porsche owners, which I respect and do agree with.
I do like the look of the new Boxster, and suspect the Cayman will look much the same. Would I let the fact that it no longer has a naturally aspirated engine stop me from buying? who knows, I will reserve judgement on that. It's all about the whole package for me - styling, handling, sound etc. I'm not going to be so naive and say "nope, from what I've read it's na or nothing, not even going to consider it".
And personally, I do not think it's a meaningless poll, just didn't have to 'cop-out' option for me

I think this is a very very good point. For those looking to replace their 98x Caysters, if the 718 powertrain is a deal breaker, what are your other choices? Are you going to get a TT? Z4? SLK? Even Merc have dropped the n/a V8 from the SLK55 for a turbo V6 in the facelift SLC43 I think. At least Merc were practically apologetic for that and dropped the price of the AMG to reflect the downsizing. Jag F-Type is the only one I can think of. As someone who's not owned a Cayster I'd rather buy/own the old 6 pot than the 4 pot, but much as people lamented the move from air to water cooled it's not like you've got a choice of the 'old' tech if you want a new car do you?

New? I'd have to try and find the cash for a 911, at least it's a 6-pot. Or I'd look at a Used Approved 911 with an NA engine.
Trouble with any public survey is that the exact wording is important - and easy to get wrong (or give an unclear/misleading answer). If the question had been would you "consider" buying a 718 then the answers would have been different.

How dare you! All PH polls are scrupulously accurate and clearly reflect perfectly on the topic being discussed
Especially when I do them !

I think you'd just keep your current car. If you had to have a new toy and wanted something track friendly, then you could do worse than the new Lotus Exige Sport 350?

Nonsense! - when the possible answers prevent me swaying the outcome!
Seriously though, I suspect there is a significant difference of opinion between those who are Porsche afficionados - and are probably more attached to the NA 6 and capricious tarts (like me) who have no particular affection for Porsches (nor emotional attachment to the NA 6) - but have just chosen one because it happened (imo) to be the best car of its type at the time I was buying.
(If I'm being a bit more analytical it's probably unfair to refer to myself as a capricious tart - it's more that I have been jilted by Lotus and am on the rebound)
Think we should snap shot this poll, revisit I a year or two and see which group of people have the highest incidence of going against their word. My money is on those who say they have an NA one and won't consider a 718.

I wish! An acquaintance with an E-type had a random young woman get into his car when he was parked saying "you seem like a nice man". Never happened to me...

Lol! Annoyingly, the only time I've ever got female attention in a car was in a Lotus Elise - had it as a loaner when my 355 was damaged, 20 mins out in it for the first time I was going up Putney High Street and a very attractive early 30s blonde lady crossed the road in front of me, stopped in the middle and said "I loooove your car!", gave me a big smile and walked off! Only ever managed to attract blokes with Fezzas and Porsches
....
I've had several 6 cylinder Porsches. I certainly wouldn't consider a 4 cylinder Cayster. Think this will only help the 6 cylinder cars value in the longer term. Electric steering is another big negative for me
Not a question of twaddle mongery.
I shall drive it.
I will be objective.
I am sure it will be a quick/nice/fast car.
BUT
I won't buy it because in my mind the Porsche I aspired to and worked hard to afford has 6 cylinders.
As a consequence I shall 'move on' or, remain with my current vehicle.
Weird?
Pedantic?
Perhaps but we are all different and entitled to an opinion which can be aired on a Forum such as this.

Exactly, I would love a V8/V12 Aston or Ferrari if I could afford it, but I can say with certainty that I wouldn't want either with a 4 cylinder engine. This poll may be very subjective and speculative, but I don't think it's pointless.

Obviously quite a lot of people are anti the flat 4 turbo, but I'm not sure what they can move on to with 6 NA cylinders. Unless they decide to drive "old" models forever they are likely going to be stuck with turbos. Given that the 718 may still prove the best car in its class AT THE PRICE, I suspect many, whatever their current stance, will accept (albeit with some regret) the inevitable. Porsche owners choose their cars for a variety of reasons and it depends on whether engine or handling is your priority - but I doubt, in the final analysis, that many will choose a dynamically inferior car just to spite Porsche.
Some will go 911 (turbo of course), Ive no doubt - but Porsche will love that.

Flat four turbos are great engines!
Scooby Doos have them and some Toyotas have them (albeit aftermarket turbo installs). There are also brilliant straight turbo fours...... I had a nice one in an RS Escort many aeons ago....
Porsche did have a diesel electric tank on the cards prior to the Tiger.........

I dont think anybody is arguing with any of that. One of my fave engines is the Ford BDA!
The point is whether they should be in a Porsche!

Forgive my ignorance I presume a "Scooby Doo" is a "Subaru" just as a "Ma Baws are Itchy" is a "Mitsubishi"

The introduction of water cooling was greeted with horror by many - rather similar to when Ferraris went away from 12 cylinders (they didn't even dare call them Ferraris - it was Dino)
Given that Porsches of the past have had flat 4s, IL4s, V8s some with turbos some air cooled, some water cooled, they have far less grounds for horror than Ferrari owners. They'll get over it - just as Ferrari owners did.
I have had 3 Boxsters a 986 followed by a 987.1 and a 987.2 S as daily drivers. All have never let me down and given me epic drives.
I am close to buying a new 981 but am now in a dilema - Should I wait until the 718 arrives - in my experience Porsche do have a habit of making something exceptional already even better. The exception was the 991 911. When it was launched having compared a 997 GTS I went for that over the 991 because of the way it drove. The 991 did look better but .....They had over sanitised the drive and oh yes the steering. I am about to drive next week the 991.2 with the new turbo engines- have they improved the dynamics over the first generation. I do hope so. I hope to drive it brings back some of the 997 feel.
The 981 interior seems great and the looks are good but I am still not convinced it's better than the 987 when it comes to driving. Is it just me ?
Watching the promo the 718 looks great I just hope it drives as good as its predecessors. What would you do - any help out there - go 981 or wait for the 718 or stick with my 987.2 ?Everyone happy with their 981 after a 987.2 ?

Ferrari aficionados can play the heritage card (however spurious) - Porsche ones can't. If road going Ducatis (or HDs) were going to have MORE than to 2 (V) cylinders , American muscle cars were reduced to 6 cylinders? There would be (is) an outcry - but it's all a load of b
ks. A 4 cylinder is no worse because it is in a Porsche, any more than 6 cylinder engine is intrinsically because it's in a Mustang or Corvette.

I drove a couple of 987.2 2.9s in early 2014 but decided against purely on the interior feeling old and a little cramped for me at 6' 1".
I went TTS instead after much debate. But the TTS' dullness and peaky turbo four left me bored after 15 months. The only aural excitement it gave was the blap... blap... blap... at full acceleration but that was seldom achieved.
When the 981 fell within my grasp used, I tried 2.7 and S versions and preferred the former due, mainly, to the wonderful engine noise, both mechanical and exhaust, as lower road speeds. Being able to take the revs up to "whining" point is the thing that gives me most pleasure from this engine. Having listened to the Porsche videos of the new 718 models, with them burping and farting along and sounding like a tractor most of the time, I'm not sure the new engine could give me the same excitement, plus, despite its variable turbo technology I'm a little concerned about having that same peaky power delivery, but only a little as Porsche are good with turbos.
They may sound good at higher revs, but being more powerful than the 981 I wonder if this will mean higher revs are less useable?
There are some practical improvements, like the GT MFSW now with paddles and heating as standard, and other tech will have moved on too no doubt.
If this was to be your first Porsche, as mine is, you'd probably be delighted with the 718 all round, but having had a 997, perhaps the best of the 911 models so far, and your 987.2, you may miss the soundtrack and steering. I'd say wait for the 718 to hit the showrooms and drive one back to back with a 981 and your 987.2.

You'd need some powerful binoculars to spot one of those, wouldn't you?
4-bangers in Porsches have been positively common in comparison. 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s - possibly not 2000s - but back again in 2010s.
