New to Cayman ownership. i have a 987.1, 2007 S version.
the car has 35000 miles on it. the PO had planned on doing a major service this fall and passed on the parts. one of the parts he gave me were new plugs. Since i have the age old problem... WIIT (while i'm in there), i was thinking of replacing the coil packs at the same time. the ones in the car are the originals.
question:
is there a recommended brand? i see most suppliers have a number of brands available.
question 2:
any special tools recommended for removing the plugs?
other planned maintenance was an oil change, of course, new serpentine belt, check the water pump for wear, and air filters (engine and cabin).
Thanks
With this low mileage, your coil packs are probably fine. The thing to look for when you remove them is cracks. If they are not cracked and you are not getting any misfire codes, I'd leave them. If you do want/need to replace them, I would go with OEM - Beru is the supplier, Pelican has them for about $44 each.
For removing the plugs the most important tool is a set of locking extensions. You'll need a variety of sizes, and the locking feature is really helpful for not leaving the plug socket in the head. They are cheap on Amazon.
Good luck and congrats on your car! You'll have fun digging into it and doing your own maintenance.
Thanks for the info.
i do enjoy working on cars especially in the winter. i am still finishing... do you ever finish... my 62 Austin Healey. bought it in boxes and a shell. it has been a blast. one reason i almost did not buy the Cayman. worried i would have too much time in the winter. but at least for this one, i have some service work to do plus still some more on the Healey.
Are all the Beru packs the same? i think i saw that brand on ebay under 200 for all 6.
Also are these newer versions better than the originals?
I'm afraid I can't answer your questions about the Beru packs. I do know that OEM parts from Pelican have served me well for many, many years over several Porsches and Audis.
I also don't know if there have been any changes/updates to the packs. The original ones seem to be quite robust. Mine are 12 years and 64K miles old, no issues at all. I think there may be more cracking problems where the weather is extreme, but they still seem to have very long life.
I bought the Beru packs on Ebay for mine, from an authorized seller for a bit over 200, if I recall. They are working fine.
Thanks for the info.
for some reason i thought i read that the newer coil packs had been updated and were better than the originals. SO i was figuring while i was in there, it might be a good idea to change them. guess i had been reading of issues with the orignals cracking on the Gen 1 cars. of course maybe they were just wearing out at higher mileage.
The replacements are different than the originals, with a longer bolt and more/thicker plastic than the factory fit ones. I replaced mine due to time, ~11 years vs. super high mileage (58k).
