Hi folks..
I am the proud owner of 2005 Boxster and love it very much. I have always taken my car to the dealer for service. I want to do routine maintenance and checks myself, but don't have the courage to do this with my Boxster. I am planning to change the air and oil filters on own. Just wondering is it relatively easy to do or should I continue to take my car to the dealer and just enjoy the ride? What do you guys suggest?
Your inputs will be helpful.
I would have to say changing the oil could not be easier, if you have a jack and stands you are golden. It took me less than 20 min to do. Easy access to the oil filter and drain plug. Look at the articles and it will show you step by step but trust me crawl under and look, and you will see how easy it is. the air filter is more work becouse you need to get access under the engine cover. This also should be under the articles step by step. Good luck and have faith in yourself
Hop in the trunk for the best air filter access!
Hi Pete, he has a Boxster, so hopping in the trunk isn't a recommended strategy. The lid will be in the way.
Changing the the oil on a 2005 Boxster is easy. Changing the air filter assembly is a PITA, but doable will ordinary tools. If you search the internet there are procedures to accessing the air filter box (you have to get past the convertible top), and then the procedure is the same as the Cayman, and there's an article on this site for the Cayman filter swap.
Whoops, sorry, I was so taken with seeing myself in the trunk that I skimmed over the post and didn't realized he has a Boxster!
Next post from Pete will be titled "Help! Stuck in Cayman rear trunk! Posting this from my phone right now!"

Can you tell me what aftermarket oil and air filters you are purchasing? Both FRAM filters I've ordered continue to be the wrong ones. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure Suncoast ships to Canada, but you could call or email them to make sure.
After the dealer's $1200 estimate for the 3 year "heavy" maintenance I got over my fear and took the plunge myself. Got the parts from Pelican (except oil - advance auto stocked the 0W40 euro spec mobil 1). Needed the Durametric for resetting the service minder. Oil is easier than many cars. need to jack it up. The spark plugs are a PITA. did the oil, filter and plugs in about 5 hours. The air filter took about half an hour. You need a t30 Torx to remove the engine cover. I languished over popping the ball and socket connections to pull the roof forward, but not a problem, they popped right back together. the instructions i read talked about the two screws to remove the air cleaner cover, but there is a third phillips that holds the filter in place inside. That cost me a couple minutes. I also did the cabin air filter. That took 5 minutes. Oh . And I checked the radiator inlets for leaves (Part of that dealer "heavy maintenance").
All in all I saved about $440 this time and that included the $40 for a oil filter wrench, $280 for the Durametric and $200 for Windows 7 to load via boot camp on my mac. Next time will be a lot cheaper.
If you are handy and maintain your other cars don't hesitate to do your own Porsche maintenance. It ain't rocket science.
