Mobil-1 0W-40 is considered to be a pretty good Group IV, PAO-based oil, that happens to be the factory-fill used by Porsche (and Mercedes, for that matter).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Anybody using this oil here? I ran came across a local shop that works on European cars and I noticed they use this oil. They guaranteed its better than Mobil 1. They said Mobil 1 is just a well advertised oil and overrated. What do you guys think?

POST 2Original post

I think people worry too much about motor oil. Mobil-1 0W-40 is considered to be a pretty good Group IV, PAO-based oil, that happens to be the factory-fill used by Porsche (and Mercedes, for that matter). There probably are better oils around, but Lubro-Moly is just another highly advertised Group IV oil, just like M1. In fact, since Exxon-Mobil is the #1 maker of PAO in the world by a long shot, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Exxon-Mobil was the source of the PAO used in Lubro Moly!

I would tend to agree with you. Years ago, when I was an Exxon oil distributor, I found out in talking to an oil tech in Houston that the main product in STP was a chemical compound called Peritone N (not sure of the spelling), and that Exxon sold it to the Studebaker Corp.(parent company of STP at the time), in railroad tanker loads. I later bought a similar product from Exxon in drums to add to some of our spinning oils for the local sock mills, and it was a very viscous, sticky substance that poured like molasses. Lots of smaller oil companies buy their products from the biggies, and there is none bigger than Exxon Mobil. They tweak it a bit, or sometimes just slap their name on it and out the door it goes. This said, there are some fine small oil producers that develop and market their own products, but even these quite often buy their base stock from a large oil company or chemical company.
