Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just checked the filler cap and it says to use (R+M)/2=93, NOT RON=93.

For the small difference in price and the fact that I drive it less than 4000 miles a year, I use the premium.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

The Cayman R calls for 93 RON, but of course we have (R+M)/2 here. My rule-of-thumb has always been that the RON will be about four points above the average. That was great when I needed 91 RON and used 89 (R+M)/2, but it is getting a little close to the edge if I need 93 RON. My son had an AMG MB that wouldn't run worth a damn on 89. Anybody have any actual experience running 89 in a Cayman? I can always use 91 if I am going to the track, but what about normal day-to-day driving?

POST 2Original post

My normal CS driving is spirited during the weekends so I use 91 all the time. I have never considered using anything lower since I do not drive her often enough to care about the price differential.

POST 3Original post

I only run 93 in my Boxster. For the small difference in price and the fact that I drive it less than 4000 miles a year, I use the premium.

POST 4Original post

You are correct on the research vs motor numbers, the research is generally 3 - 6 points over the average. I run 89 in my CS anytime I am not going to the track and the car runs great. I really can't tell any difference.

POST 5Original post

I was slightly mis-led. I just checked the filler cap and it says to use (R+M)/2=93, NOT RON=93. That makes a big difference. It also makes it easier to be sure I am using the right stuff. I won't have to mentally convert.

POST 6Original post

Here's what the Owner's Manual says (p. 219 of 2007 OM): "Your engine is designed to provide optimum performance and fuel economy using unleaded premium fuel with an octane rating of 98 RON (93 CLC or AKI). Porsche therefore recommends the use of these fuels in your vehicle. Porsche also recognizes that these fuels may not always be available. Be assured that your vehicle will operate properly on unleaded premium fuels with octane numbers of at least 95 RON (90 CLC or AKI), since the engine’s ”Electronic Octane™ knock control“ will adapt the ignition timing, if necessary."
