Porsche installed a 31 mm spacer on the 993 Carrera S with the same 9" x 17" wheels.
Leading evidence: 'Install 31 mm spacer' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill fenders and look right' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
They will certainly work but may require slightly bigger spacers than those to fill the fenders and look right.

My first autocross is scheduled for March 2 (or close to that) so I won't have too much time to prepare the car and will probably use my 17" factory rims (from my '99 C4) wheels for the first few runs (until my Kuhmos wear out).

You are better off using the 225/285 combination on a set of Turbo Look II wheels specified by Porsche for winter tires:

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, I got confirmation that my C4S has shipped out of Charleston and is on its way to my dealer. Should be here mid-week next week or so.
My first autocross is scheduled for March 2 (or close to that) so I won't have too much time to prepare the car and will probably use my 17" factory rims (from my '99 C4) wheels for the first few runs (until my Kuhmos wear out).
Does anyone know which spacer I will need to adapt these wheels to the C4S? Will I also need longer wheel bolts? Is it worth it to get a set of 17x11's (Fikse or Kinesis) and use the cheaper Kuhmo tire or should I bite the bullet and get another set of Turbo wheels and put on the Hoosiers (since Kuhmo doesn't make 18's...a least not in the V700, though I heard the Ecsta V700 comes in 18" sizes)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mike
Kumho does make the Porsche 18" sizes in the Ecsta V700 line:

8" x 18" - ET50 - 225/40-18
10" x 18" - ET47 - 285/30-18
Thanks Viken,
Aren't the factory wheels 18x11, though? Or is this (18x10) just the winter setup?
18x10's are a heckuva lot easier to find than the darn 11's.

The factory supplied wheel is indeed 11" wide. The one I am referring to is a 10" version of the same style that Porsche recommends for winter tires of smaller than 295 size. You can buy these wheels from www.carnewal.com

Not those of the 996 Turbo Look II variety I am referring to.
The ones on e-bay tend to be either the 18x11 or the standard 996 18x10.
I checked out Gert's site and I will probably go with the Turbo II's and some Ecsta V700's.....but that will have to be in a month or two.
Do you think the 17's would work with a 5-7mm spacer?

They will certainly work but may require slightly bigger spacers than those to fill the fenders and look right. Give me some time and I'll see what I can come up with.
Are the 17's you have the standard 7" and 9" Porsche wheels?
I think they are 7 and 9.5 (I thought the 9's are on the boxster). Maybe the boxster is on 8.5's. I know they are not the Boxster size! I will check this evening.
Thanks for your help.

The factory 17" rears are 9" for the 996 and 8.5" for the Boxster.
Mike,
Here are the differences between the wheel outer edge dimension from the hub:
Front: The 7" x 17" Porsche wheel would sit 17.7 mm further in from where the stock 8" x 18" is.
Rear: The 9" x 17" Porsche wheel would sit 35.4 mm further in from where the stock 11" x 18" is.
If you desire to bring the outer edge of the 17" wheels to about where the stock 18's would be, you will need a 17 mm spacer front and a 35 mm spacer rear.
Holy crap! A 35mm spacer is huge (isn't it?)! I don't even want to think about the increased forces on the longer wheel studs.....
Perhaps I can sell a kidney (or something) and get those other wheels and tires before the first auto-x...
Thanks for your help.
Mike

Yes and no. Porsche installed a 31 mm spacer on the 993 Carrera S with the same 9" x 17" wheels. If done properly, I don't see a problem with it.
Personally, I think you're going to need more rubber anyway. I would definitely go for the right setup with either custom 17's or the 18's as we previously discussed.
