Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had a note waiting when I got home saying "Your car is leaking oil," apprently from the yard guy who saw oil spots under where the engine would be when parked. I looked under it without moving the car and saw what appears to be a few spots. What should I do? I know this could be a fairly big problem and the dealer is 2 hrs away. Anything I can do to distinguish this from a big problem before getting the car to the dealer?
Thanks,
Mike

I just picked up my car from the dealer. I developed an oil leak at the rear main seal. Of course covered under warranty. Also, my dealer told me that they fixed a recall, something to do with reprograming the DME unit. I also had the airbag warning light fixed for a second time in 6 months.
The car is a year old and 14,800 miles.
Are you going to Atlanta or Nashville for service? I can vouch for the mechanic (singular) at Harper in Knoxville and it's only 90 miles or so. He's good and very thorough.
Anyway, I would suggest crawling under the car and seeing where the leak is coming from. It could be as simple as a vent line that came off the valve cover (ask me how I know), or something more major like the rear seal. At least you can get an idea of where it is.
Good luck!
Mike
my car is '99 996 and have 21000 mi on it.
last week i got similar problem,
when i was crusing somewhere in alhambra, suddenly my engine check light on.
next day i took my car to circle import which is my local porsche dealer, they tell me that there are oil leaks in my car.
sure, everything was cover by porsche warranty and i am also receive a rental car, but it takes them a week to finish the job.
my concern is wheather oil leak is common problem for 996? because after the warranty expire it can become one very expensive service....
I had a '99 996 that was a daily driver and had 55k mi. when I traded it in last Oct. for an '02. I never had any problems with oil leaks. In fact, the car hardly used any oil between scheduled changes.
