How do I change the battery on my 2011
Cayman
? Are there any tricks? Do I need a radio code. What is a good rrplacement battery?
I'm pretty sure you don't need a code, but you can hook up a small 12V battery or use a charger/maintainer while you swap to save your radio presets. Lots of people have used Walmart and Interstate batteries. I was about to get the Bosch one from Pepboys but they covered mine under warranty.
Don't forget to hook up the vent tube.
I have just done this on my 2009 so should be the same...
Biggest issue I had was physically lifting it out - ended up pretty much standing in the fronk!
Once the new battery is in (Bosch S5 110 is a direct size replacement btw) make sure you hook up both the vent tube (clear tube on right of battery as viewed from front of car, and plug the vent on the left of the battery with the plug which can be twisted off the battery terminal cover).
I did not bother with a second battery to keep charge on. Sat nav kept all its memory but the car threw some errors when I first started it up again (
PASM
, PSM and maybe one more). These all went away within minutes of the first drive - I believe it is just systems re-initialising.
Overall, quite painless.
NB: I am now using a CTECK 3.8 to keep the battery in top condition whilst I am not driving. Took 2 mins to bolt on some tails whilst the battery was out so it just clips on now.

Just did a battery replacement on my '08 S. Confirming rakh1's notes above, plus my own experience:
Nothing unusual as far as the removal and install, except that, as noted, you will need to stand in the frunk to lift the battery out/in. No radio code needed - my trip odometer reset to zero, and I got a 'PSM failure' warning for a minute, after which it cleared. No other faults.
Three companies (Exide, Johnson Controls, and one other whose name I have forgotten) make all the batteries offered in the US market, so where you buy it is really down to convenience and what brand name is stuck on the top. An AGM (absorbent glass mat) battery from one of the 'bigs' (Sears, AutoZone, etc.) should be $170-180, vs. the $380 or so that
Porsche
charges for the OEM version.
Bottom line - an easy swap. In my case, I did it because the original was five years old - it was still holding 12.3 volts, but since the car is my daily (and only) driver, better safe than sorry...
One more point. You are correct about the short list of manufacturers but warranties differ among brands from 1 to 3 years for free replacement as do prices. I suggest you shop around.
