Hi All,
Just recently I upgraded all my oem
bose speakers
with infinity reference's with the help of the great write ups on this forum. I still kept the oem amp and head unit, just a straight replacement of the factory speakers.
However I encountered a problem. I noticed that the left door sub does not work, there is no sound coming from it. I replaced the originals with a 6.5 speaker. The right side is working. Im just wondering before I remove the door panel again if there is something unique about the wiring with the front door subs? Because I definitely checked to make sure it was working before I put the door panel back on and then only noticed after I installed the right door speakers that there is a problem.
Also the speaker set I bought came with crossover units but I did not use them, will this be a problem for the new Infinity speakers I installed?
First off, what exactly did you keep vs. replace?
The
Bose system
drives an 8" woofer in the door on one amplifer channel, and a separate amplifier channel runs the smaller door speaker as well as the dash tweeter (these are on the same channel). I'm going to guess you put a 6.5" component in place of that 8" speaker, because I don't think you could fit one anywhere else. If this is the case, the most likely reason is that a wire came loose during installation. Also, that
Bose
amplifer is used to driving a 1 Ohm woofer in this location. The infinity is part of a component system with a higher impedance (usually 4 Ohm). I don't have any idea what the impedance of the 6.5 alone would be, and what that would change as far as amplifier output. Some amplifiers vary significantly in output with different loads, others are consistent across a wide range - depends on their design. So it may affect output, but it shouldn't harm the amp in any way.
As for not using the crossover, you're probably ok with the 6.5. Rest assured the
bose amp
is only sending it low frequencies. It's the other one I'd be more concerned about. I'm assuming you replaced the dash tweeter, but left the midrange in the door alone (or did you remove it?). Remember, these two speakers share a single amplifier channel. I don't know how
Bose
handles these as far as crossovers. I presume there's some sort of high pass filter so low frequencies are blocked coming out of the amp. But does
Bose
use additional crossover to split the mid from the high between these two speakers? Don't know. There may have been passive crossovers on the speaker terminals themselves, or they could be hidden somewhere in the car's wiring. Or, there could be nothing at all. If there was a high pass crossover on the
bose
tweeter that you removed, you run some risk of blowing the new tweeter.
Personally, I wouldn't run a set of components without their supplied crossover. They're designed with specific cutoff frequencies based on what the drivers are designed to reproduce. I would not assume that whatever the
Bose
does is ideal for this set. That's not to say it can't be done, I just don't know if it's ideal.
Update - It turns out I didnt connect the connections to the door sub in the left hand side. Its one of those things you suspected but I didnt want to go through the whole hassle of removing the door panel again. I ended up destroying 3 clips in the process.
But Im still very concerned about not using a crossover for the tweeters and mid. Because if they are both on the same channel from the
bose amp
, I suspect the factory units have had crossovers built into the speaker it self. The reason I didnt use the crossovers is because there was no room to mount them and it required me to locate the tweeter cables in the door.
I wonder if there are micro crossovers? about the size of a tweeter?
My thoughts on the Infinity reference speakers so far is that it is definitely a step up from the
bose speakers
. These are more musical and can clearly hear more sounds that wasnt there before. Also you are able to now up the volume up to max and they are still clear. The factory speakers would have crackled and hiss. The Infinity 6.5 inch mid/subwoofer are a disappointment though. It feels they really need more power to perform better because they dont seem to pump much bass. I think the factory 8inch are better here, able to make more bass with the standard amp. I may in future return back to the factory 8inch subs but leave things for now.
