Do I need to just let the car run (in neutral ) until it's up to temp and listen?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a simple way to check if the radiator fans are working? The car runs between the 180 & 220 mark (outside air temp is 94) but I can't seem to hear if they are coming on at all? Is there a simple way of testing them? Do I need to just let the car run (in neutral ) until it's up to temp and listen? Thoughts

POST 2Original post

Pretty sure you can test the high speed by turning the AC on and listening/placing your hand in the front of the front wheels wells. Not sure on low speed. Although I've read where folks say that can be activated with Porsche electronic device(PIWIS) or the Durametric device.

POST 3Original post

Actually the fans run on low speed as soon as the A/C is switched on. If they run on low speed it's pretty much a guarantee they will run on high speed. Just remember there is a separate relay for each speed of each fan, and separate fuses too. Four relays and four fuses total. The durametric and the piwis can turn the fans on and off. Not sure about other scan tools.

If you go for a long drive and come back home and fans are silent while the car is idling, then more than likely, the fan resisters have gone bad.

Are they hard to replace?

POST 6Original post

No just Google the repair. The $15 Amazon resistors work fine.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 19451084

Nope... not hard at all. Just remove the wheel and the plastic fender well liner, then cut the old resister off and solder the new one on.

POST 8Original post

Yeah, just press the AC button and go and have a listen. Both front fans will come on at low speed.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, just tested it by turning on the AC and sure enough the fans on both sides are running. Thanks for the help!

What year is your car? My 99s fans wont come on, even low speed, until the last white line. The DME is reporting close to 212F, even if the dash gauge is showing a much higher number.

I only have Durametric and a Foxwell NT510 but both were able to activate the fans for testing.
