I bought a '
06 Cayman S
a while ago and I've been looking to retrofit the car with the
PCM
2.1 navigation system ever since. I've found a lot of useful info on this forum about what parts are needed and how to do the installation, but I haven't found any posts about the telephone feature.
Will the GSM telephone option work straightaway if I retrofitted my car with the
PCM
2.1 unit as described:

PCM 2.1 Install (CDR-24 Radio Removal) - Articles
If not, what would I need to do to retrofit the GSM telephone option?
Thanks
The OEM
Porsche
Phone Module option is a box which fits under the passenger seat, connected via fiber optic cables, which will be a PITA to install. Furthermore, you need a SIM card to be put into the slot on the
PCM
2.1 head unit.
Mine came with the
Porsche
Phone Module, but I've had it disconnected and replaced with the Dension GW500 and BT1500 bluetooth module. Its just much more convenient to have your existing phone pair with the
PCM
2.1 every time you start the engine rather than have the car on a 2nd number and to forward your phone everytime you get in. The BT1500 emulates a
Porsche
Phone Module, so they keypad on the
PCM
2.1 works as well as the display.
There is a current group buy on the GW500 in this forum.
Agree with tsammyc, I've got a duplicate sim for mine, but if you leave it in and my phone on sometimes a call will go to the car other times to the phone and sometimes nowhere!
Also if I need a contact I have to have my phone on because you can only store so many contacts on a sim and stuff entering them all on the
PCM
!
You're better off installing something like the Dension Gateway 500 and bluetooth adaptor IMO. Much prefer the factory bluetooth in my Land Rover over the factory phone system in my CS!
Now that I have a Volkswagen that came standard with built-in Bluetooth and just had a Kia
Soul
as a loaner while the Volvo was in the shop, also with built-in Bluetooth, the Dension is sounding like a better and better option. I currently have a $99 (bought last year) Contour bluetooth device hanging on my visor which no longer answers the phone automatically. It is acting mainly as a loudspeaker.
I just bought a
2008 Boxster
with
PCM
2.1 and the
Porsche
phone module installed. I don't plan to use a phone with it but I might want to use my
iPad
2 with it. It should work, right?
I'm hoping someone can answer whether having the phone module (offers Bluetooth, right?) installed on my
PCM
2.1 will allow me to use my
iPad
2, which has Bluetooth, to play music. If it won't work then I'll buy either a bluetooth/FM transmitter or just a FM transmitter. I'm leaving to pick up my 08
Boxster
Saturday and would like to know previous to the trip.
It would seem to me that it should work, but what seems to make sense seldom does. Anyone have any thoughts?
The bluetooth phone module won't do anything other than basic phone functions. No streaming. I'm not a expert but the generally accepted best solution for PCM2.1 is the Denison Gateway 500. This will allow BT streaming directly through the PCM2.1. Do a search for Denison. Bumperplugs is probably the best place to buy from as the support is excellent.
Dension Gateway 500SBT
Good luck
Thanks for the info!
Damn, I was hoping it would work and save me some coin... Guess it's one of those "If it's too good to be true... " scenarios.
Yeah, the
Porsche
phone module requires the box under the seat, then a sim card inserted into the
PCM
sim card slot....not a truly functional way to go.
