I bought my 08 Cayman new and it is now almost five years old. Until we moved out of state, there was never a problem with the Homelink. It would open the garage door from 50-100' away, no problems. I reprogrammed the Homelink in our new house and it works perfectly. Sometimes. It is the "sometimes" part that is puzzling.
In the garage, the Homelink works great. Outside the garage, it is a hit-or-miss proposition. When it's good, it's very good. It will work from 50-100' away, just like at our old house. When it's bad, however, it won't work at all. It's really annoying, because you can't rely on it and there is no rhyme or reason to it. Tonight it would not raise either its regular garage door or the other garage door that is programmed, even though I moved the car within 3' of the door. Holding the key down longer doesn't help. If it's going to work, it will work, and if not, no amount of coaxing or button mashing will help. And it doesn't seem to matter how close we get to the garage door. Since we have now "outsmarted" it by carrying the original clicker with us, we were able to get inside -- whereupon the Homelink was perfectly happy to close the door as well as the other garage door. And these are almost the exact same garage doors and openers that we had in our old house. And the same issue is true when leaving the house. Most of the time it works and the door closes -- except when it won't. We can't leave until we verify that the door actually moved.
I think it is haunted -- LOL. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the circuit is somehow fried, but only partially, just enough to make it unreliable. I don't see how that's possible but I am at my wit's end. Any ideas???:helpme:
I would have said it sounds like you are just getting some interference from another transmitter somewhere else, BUT the fact that it still cant work really close (which should swamp out the interferer) makes me think something is faulty (intermittent circuit).
When it does not work try to open it via the slave contact input on the opener and see what happens.
I've got the same behavior. I've torn everything apart and put it back together and no change. Sometimes I'll drive around the cul-de-sac once and it works, other times I have to pull the clip on opener out of the glove box.
It's maddening. If you figure it out, I'd love to know.
On mine there was a time when it stopped working after having worked for years. It would still occasionally work but most times it wouldn't. It turns out I had accidentally moved the small wire antenna out of the way to do something near the opener, not even sure what the heck I was doing, and it was no longer receiving the signal from Homelink. Merely re extending the antenna to it's straight down/hanging position and my problem was solved. Worth a look at least. Good luck.
do you live near a Navy port. Here in San Diego when the big ships come in from deployment garage door openers get flakey all around the bay.
