Before I bought my RS in November I had the OPC 111 point check carried out which it passed with flying colours - not being content with that I then instructed a second Independant inspection by Peter Morgan Consultants - only after these two inspections was I confident that a good car lay beneath its skin.

An inspection for me has to entail placing it on a lift and reviewing the manufacture date codes stamped on the key elements like suspension ect, remove rear/front lights to check for minor damage and remove the wheel liners to look for panel anomalies and the list goes on...more than this is not normally possible.

First post and its the dreaded anybody know this car ..... Unforgivable and I apologies profusely and indefinitely !
I have been looking at GT3's for a long time and almost always miss out as I am too slow on the trigger. So before embarking on a painfully long journey again, does anybody know this car -there are not many clubsports around and even less for sale. Has anyone had any dealing with this dealer?
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...
fingers crossed
Peter Foster
If this is what you want then move fast. Bring somebody who really knows to give the car a full check.
Heard a story of a GT3 which was sold as 100% ok and had one entire side of the body replaced.
Sorry I don't know the car but the dealer is very well established in our area.
If anyone needs the car inspecting then Cath Burrows is just round the corner, Cath inspects and works on quite a few GT3s.

I looked for a long time for a 7.1 clubsport. Found mine in December, which I thought was the perfect month to buy a GT3. I arranged an inspection 24 hours after I'd seen the car and did a deal staight after. Not sure that I would have got the car if I hadnt have moved very quickly. The carbon buckets are very nice by the way. The folding ones not so.
Gents,
Thank you for all the responses. The car interests me for a few reasons really.
1.)Mileage--this means I can use it for 20K and then sell with no financial loss without counting on prices rising anymore . A car with 30k+ miles now will have circa 50K on when it comes time to sell. If I was buying to keep, it would not bother me but this more an asset transfer than dream car to keep forever.....
2.)Not many club sports about and certainly very few with this mileage.
3.)As far as inspections I would go to those I trust. Its condition and accident free and then---- suspension suspension suspension on these....10k refresh comes to mind anyone?
Plenty horror stories about gt3's seen a few 'mint' NOT----
Anyone know this particular vehicle ?
Thanks Pete
The most important factor when buying a GT3 is its current condition and recent spend.
10k is not low miles if they were all on a track.
For that money I would want totally clear rev ranges and original paint with all usual consumables (brakes etc) in A1 condition....
I agree. I looked at several low mileage cars that been poorly maintained, badly driven. I ended up buying a 35K mile clubsport. The car had original paint, was well maintained and the harness and extinguisher were still in thier boxes. Mileage is always important but I think that condition is absolutely key.
Absolutely its condition first and an open book about any previous work no matter how small. Perhaps I should have highlighted it more. A beautiful looking unregistered cat c is no good ,they exist and more so than anyone admits esp with this type of car. Track insurance policy on top of normal insurance and any off is covered and not registered !
Once the condition box is ticked ( and I expect at this price and mileage it is as it came from its loving German mother) there is suspension, engine and gearbox . A rev range report is naturally an important subject. What did we do before this data capture .... I am sure most older cars had over revs in the thousands !
After a few disappointments and missed opportunities I think the way forward is to ask of prior knowledge on this forum and then go and inspect the car for visual condition. If this checks out (shut lines, paint ,interior ect) then make the next step and have it thoroughly inspected. An inspection for me has to entail placing it on a lift and reviewing the manufacture date codes stamped on the key elements like suspension ect, remove rear/front lights to check for minor damage and remove the wheel liners to look for panel anomalies and the list goes on...more than this is not normally possible. this is over and above the normal checks
These cars are very hard to find in mint condition. Mr Rance search is proof of this. I just want to avoid an unnecessary trip . Life is busy enough
Pete
Mines not for sale but if it was there's no way I'd let you start taking the lights out on the off chance you might buy it, not because it's had an off, it's mint and I bought it from JZM so has good provenance, I just wouldn't want you pulling the car to pieces.
That being said I'd have no objections taking it to somewhere like JZM or Paragon to have a full on ramp inspection carried out.
Pete A.
I fully understand your concerns but place the shoe on the other foot ,80k cash is nothing to be sniffed at. I have not asked to strip your car, just stated that to really see any car properly a thorough inspection is required (by a third party) these cars are extremely hard to find unblemished and such an inspection does require a certain amount of investigation. I have seen 8 ( not all cs) in the last 12 months 3 where lovely but sold, 3 rather average and 2 certainly avoidable.
Just trying to avoid a long trip.
Nobody know this car ? Looks like a trip may be in order.

I totally understand it's a lot of money, and I know you don't want to take my car apart
and agree an inspection is prudent.
Please don't take my comment as being obtuse, it wasn't meant that way
I just personally wouldn't want things taking apart as they then have to be put back together, who's to say they all go back as perfect as they started?

Were the average and avoidable examples at independents or OPCs?
OP, you have been looking for a car for a year that meets your inspection criteria?
In that time prices have risen 20% and you haven't had any enjoyment out of one of the best road cars it's possible to buy.
I get the idea of not wanting to buy a bent car, but I also think this whole "inspection" thing can be taken a bit too far. It's like you don't actually want to buy a car at all
Life's too short.
It's very hard to tick all the boxes right now and I think some slight compromise will be needed.
My spec of choice was a clubsport with PCCB's and these are few and far between on the open market.
Personally if I was to go through the buying process again I would register my interest with one of the reputed indies like 911virgin and wait for them to locate a car for you. They will stick to it like glue if anything goes wrong and they value their reputation above any other factor which is what you want when spending what to me is an enormous amount of money.

Someone mention CS with Pccb? 😉
Gents,
Email is such a difficult medium to use and is fraught with danger on every corner. I enjoy ready the posts but generally shy away from posting myself as would hate to be caught up in a table tennis match .
No ill feelings from me at all ever to anyone .
No screw drivers in hand for Porsche inspections from me either ! Do you mind if I bring a socket set
Lets be clear I couldn't image anything worse as a seller OMG you would like to do what !!!
What I am trying to say is that if a car checks out visually and has perfect body work all panel lines are consistent, bumpers line up perfectly, window codes match, rev check, good service history and care, brakes show no signs of abuse and no spray work-- all is well and no need for the dreaded screw driver on inspection.
But lets say there is a minor inconsistency then surely this needs to be looked into a little bit further. We are not talking about a 20k car here-- top money should be perfect and if not surely the reason should be either obvious and if not a question mark should be raised.
I have been looking for a year sadly
I have seen a few and heard of a few horror stories some from Porsche themselves. In my mind the specialist dealers are going to be more thorough in an inspection and as others have said JZM,RPM,Paragon,JAZ,Fern autofarm and a few more all can perform a decent inspection.
While I am in confession mode, I have a small issue with low mileage cars having rims being redone too --- awaiting hate mail from the force !
What is the first thing that hits the kerb ? What is the second thing that takes a knock....not all offs are going to show body damage. In the old days ( I am not young anymore ) e30 bmws more than one
(when rev limiters were there to limit revs and not condemn a car
had an off, rear end went a little further than expected (well it wasnt going to be the front was it!). The rear hit a kerb popped the tyre and cracked the rim . A month later rear wheel bearing and then a while after that the dif was not as happy as it used to be. Now of course the dif may not be related but it cemented the fact that not all offs are going to show in body work to me.
These cars being what they are should be used as intended and as such many have had offs of various kinds...which is not a problem as long as open about all known events.
Thanks for all the comments. What a place!
Peter
gents
The cars that I found to be avoidable were at non Porsche specialists which is why I ask the question on this forum. In fact if we go back further than a year I a went to see a 996 gt2 that was for reasonable money but when not even a meter away you could clearly see it had had major work.
There are perfect cars out there and I have seen a few at the independent specialists ( all sold in a day or 2 ).Seen one or two private nice ones as well just not ready at the time.

Can't help but have some empathy with this point. Maybe you should have bought a new one :-) anyway this is where the good independents add their value in as much as they will take care of any problems should they occur. Even an Opc car will come with a pretty robust warranty. Why not let them underwrite your paranoia and just get on with driving and enjoying. I know that the thrill of the chase is part of the fun but unless you just want one to be buried in maybe leave the socket set at home?
The issue in this market is that if you are very demanding or fussy, the likelihood is that the car will be gone before you've made all your checks. I don't mean that in a critical way; it's just the way the market is working currently.
As has been said, the deliberation has cost you quite a lot of money in the last 12 months. I have paid £75k for a Comfort from an OPC - basically what the car cost new. Two years ago I could have bought a Clubsport for £55k.
Gents,
Painfully aware of the market the last year. As I intend to keep the car for 2 years and then sell the price rises do not have such an impact....I think of it as asset diversification . makes me feel better anyway.
I dont see anything wrong with wanting a car of this nature inspected by a competent person. I am no expert and want to protect my interests and future sell on.
Club sports are hard to find and there are not many ...just looking at the avoidance thread on this forum is enough to reach for a pack of imodium . How many 997's club sports are there ?..how many on the avoidance thread and or known to have had work...do the math and it does not look good!!
Perhaps over cautious....
mm450exc said:
85k for a gen1? Ouch! LHD not for you? At this point I would buy in Germany.
This. Was casually looking a few months ago when they where circa £65k, but at £85k would rather go LHD.
Over cautious? Maybe a little.
Like I said, I understand not wanting to buy a bent car. But to not buy a 7 or 8 year old car, regardless of mileage, because the wheels have been refurbished may be taking things a tad too far.
At the end of the day it has to come down to realistic expectation.
From your description it sounds like you want a track-focused car (CS spec) that has never been on track or driven hard in it's 7-8 year life. That in itself is starting to push the boundary of realistic expectation for me. Add in all your other caveats and the sum of those add up to a unicorn car.
I don't want to come across as being argumentative. I am purely pointing this out as these cars are wonderful wonderful machines. Machine, being the operative word. Denying yourself access to the experience by some self-imposed unrealistic idealism is such a real shame. I WANT you to buy a car, and I want you to enjoy it. I can't believe that a wheel refurb or a new windscreen or stone chip on the nose or gravel rash on the sills will prevent you from getting anything but the deepest satisfaction from the driving and ownership experience
Gents,
As always email is not the best medium. Not wanting to buy a car because it has refurbed wheels is indeed a slight over exaggeration...niot sure where that was written but it is friday afternoon
I have no problem buying a car with refurbished wheels, just nervous about it and lets face it hypothetically if a car had refurbed wheels and a respray would you not ask yourself a question ? Well if not then each to his own I suppose.
Track car not tracked ---can be found --I believe mr Rance has just such a toy
They are out there. No problem buying a car with slight road rash boys -have no idea where that came from
Just wanted to know if anyone knew the car.....my personal preference for a car was no but seems to now be in debate.
Is there anything wrong with wanting a car that is in superb condition ?
does anybody know the car ?

Not really, thats got 35000 miles on it and while there is nothing wrong with a left hand drive car, if it's not what you wanted it will always bug you.
First you "save" 27k! 35k miles is nothing for the Mezger. I got 42k on my gen2 GT3 and I think it's about broken in.
Then the obvious - car been designed as LHD and is the "better" car.
Heck - I might just go get it!
Interesting thread.... definitely all original panels and no chassis damage at that price. I wouldn't think GT3 patina includes accident damage.
Am I looking too closely, but is the joint line between Right rear bumper and wheel arch / fender a bit "off" compared to the Left?

Sorry Peter, you mentioned having an issue with low mileage cars having their wheels redone. Assumed redone meant refurbed. And I extrapolated gravel rash from your other list of wants :-) Ignore me now.
Re that second car. It's at an Indy that is next door (but has no affiliation with) Sport and Classic. Both are about a mile from my house. Mike at sports and classic is a GT3 owner (as am I) and is fastidious in his care of his cars and massively knowledgable about GT cars in general. If you needed the car inspected I can't think of anyone better to carry that out. I couldn't recommend him enough, as many others here would too. Might be worth a call.
Don’t want to take this too far off topic (ie Gen 1) but a couple of observations from someone who has just bought a 997GT3.
Previous track use? One of the other posters on this thread bought a Gen 2 996GT3 that I had owned previously. I was second owner and knew that the first owner, who also posts on PH, had tracked the car. I tracked it. Since then I have seen some video of it in the current owner’s hands going well at Oulton Park. And despite all this if you saw the car today I would be very surprised if you didn’t think it a lovely example. After all it’s what they are designed for.
And LHD is certainly worth a shout. Mine is LHD, 1 owner, Riviera, CS,35k km (20k miles) original panel and paint. Some track use of course though fire extinguisher still in its wrapping. Despite looking for some time I didn’t see anything in RHD that was comparable.

Is there such a thing as to few miles? An average of 1,000 miles a year just raises more questions for me.

How do you find a LHD on UK roads?
LHD is pretty easy to adjust to and most of the time makes little difference. Overtaking is the main issue but even there it's no real problem as long as you take extra care. I had a LHD 964RS before and so am perhaps more used to it. Also I do quite a bit of driving in Europe in RHD cars where the same issues are a mirror image.
Small problems like the aspherical door mirror is on the wrong side but I guess that could easily be changed; I haven't bothered yet but might do later. Benefits such as 90l tank.
Daily driver? Perhaps not, but otherwise LHD is no real problem.

No probs at all. I drove the black Gen 2 left hooker which was advertised, albeit briefly, by the Exeter OPC about three weeks ago. In fact, I put a deposit down! The car will be based in France though.

Yes the colour is not that common. Not sure if it was PTS or special order. UK press car was the same.

Yes it is the RPM car. Very nice guys to deal with and the whole transaction went very smoothly. Just got the V5 through today.
LHD is no problem in the UK; I have currently both LHD and RHD Porsches in Germany and have had both LHD and RHD cars in the UK. It is ridiculous the discrepancy in price between LHD and RHD. For me, I prefer the LHD driving experience. Don't let the position of the steering wheel put you off.
Many HPI clear GT3's are also not what they sold as. Many have panels replaced outside of insurance. Again this is not a major concern so long as a reputable company has done the work.
Before I bought my RS in November I had the OPC 111 point check carried out which it passed with flying colours - not being content with that I then instructed a second Independant inspection by Peter Morgan Consultants - only after these two inspections was I confident that a good car lay beneath its skin. I highly recommend Peter Morgan - an extremely detailed and photographic 20 page report certainly gives you confidence in getting to know a vehicle .
I have a LHD GT3 also. Must say I prefer LHD Porsche in general, 90l tank is great benefit and no problems on the road. Getting parking tickets from machines on the right is a bit of a faff sometimes, but that's about it. Great for Euro hoons also!

There is another low mileage white clubsport for sale which went on today. I don't know either car but it might be worth a look?

Lovely...Needs Black wheels and pccb imo . Stunning condition
Is there such a thing as to few miles? An average of 1,000 miles a year just raises more questions for me.
Had a look around this today, looks very clean and Orginal car, some minor stone chips on front and the rear wheels have been refurbished. Looks like it's still on the orginal brake discs as minor lipping which to me suggest this car hasn't seen a track or been driven hard. Sales man didn't know what the RR States was but Sports and Classics are next door so Mike could tell you if anyone interested. If your after a CS this would be worth viewing.

Was that the car I noticed in the classifieds recently at £90K? Look a beauty. Can't be to many around in Riviera.
Yes the colour is not that common. Not sure if it was PTS or special order. UK press car was the same.
I have the "other" RHD Riviera CS - they were PTS. I believe there are only 2 in the country.

That's good to know Jon.My brother has placed a deposit on this car today subject to an inspection and RR report.
It has been a rather enlightening weekend -
Went to collect the wife's car from the detailers and started talking Porsche again. I see this guy once or twice a year and have used him for many . It turns out he had a white gen 1 997 Club sport in the last 6 or so months that came through his shop with a little history!
Whilst cleaning the under body (forensic cleaning he calls it
) he comes across clamp marks from a chassis jig in various locations and chassis creasing. Moving forward he then removes the lights front and rear (I wont mention the tool used for the rear lights ) and finds more evidence of damage inside the light cluster and right rear arch. He says the signs were all over the car of a pretty hard hit . This bloke loves his Porches and has an encyclopaedic memory of the cars he has detailed.
Poor owner of the car was devastated, as it turns out it was sold as accident free and mint.
To make matters worse apparently a Porsche 111 point check did not reveal anything and yet it has been on a jig for straightening without question!!
The detailing guy said he sees it a few times a year with high value cars. He reckons that secondary insurance (track day cover) pays for the repair and its not logged on the cars record.
Well cant be many 997 gen 1 white club sports about. He will send me the details of the car when he has time. PM me if interested in Chassis numbers in the next 2 weeks
Work commitments have forced a trip to the Far East for 9 days which puts a stop to viewing the cars
.

Can I ask if you are insinuating that the car is currently for sale and that there is a hidden history? This is based on the comment " not many white .... CS about"
it would be out of order to offer to circulate details of someone else's car if it's currently not for sale and being advertised in a misleading manner - the 'devastated owner' might have no intention of ever selling the car and misleading purchasers as they were mislead
I think this is worth a bit of clarification

I fully understand and agree entirely with your comments. Which is exactly why nothing detrimental has been posted until the owner is contacted to establish what is or has happened with the car (apologies to white cs gt3 owners in the interim). If you were buying you would want to know if extra care should be taken during inspection surely ?
As a forum it is in our own interest to help members and make others aware of issues with cars aka gt3 avoidance thread. As I am looking for a car I found it rather interesting and thought I would relay the information. Of course not every 997 gt3 cs has an issue . I do wonder sometimes what the true statistic is for mint cars that have never had an accident vs cars that have had and cars that have been on the jig.
There is a reason why cup cars are half the price of road going versions. --It is expected that a cup car has had a tussle or two. I have no problem buying a car with damage as long as it is explained in detail, as light body damage is vastly different from chassis damage. I am not in the market for a gt3 that has had extensive damage for top dollar. No problem buying a cat c with fully documented build for £35--anyone? Remember the orange RS that sold recently for around the 45 mark. Looked like a decent car for that money
I will endeavour to find out what has happened to the car as I can now see that a blanket statement was possibly not the best way to describe things.

So someone you were talking too, told you a tale about an accident damaged white GT3,
you don't know if it is up for sale
, or in the guys garage but thought to post it up with no further detail, and now you think it reasonable to contact the owner ( who you don't know from adam) to find out what he has done with the car??? WTF
Good luck with that, oh and if you want a nice GT3 JZM have a lovely one for sale at £96k, or would you rather keep looking for another year?

Its one thing to out a dealer (or private seller) who is actually selling a car in full knowledge that it has been repaired as this will protect potential purchasers from unwittingly being sold a dog.
It is another thing entirely to start slinging mud about regarding cars (or their owners), which are not for sale. In fact it is quite wrong and I cannot imagine that the owner in question would be happy to hear from you in any way.
I would be more interested in knowing who the 'professional' detailer you're referring to is, because I want to make damm sure that he comes nowhere near any of my cars at any point in the future - lets have that information - this would be doing the forum a better service than radomnly gossiping and throwing around second hand information as facts - especially the offer to provide chassis numbers to third parties.............that is well below the belt!!

Hi Kul
Yes it is useful to share info, and i may have been a bit confrontational in my reply reading it back, but thats not info, it's second hand gossip.
I was more shocked that he said he was going to contact the owner of said car and pump him for information on what he did with the car?

totally agree - 150%...................but surely its not the point of the forum to spread second hand info obtained in such a fashion about some poor chaps car who is already 'devastated' when it serves no good purpose (at this time).
I don't think its appropriate to have a thread along the lines of......'lets list everyone's car who has had an accident and had it repaired, even if its not for sale, 'cos its useful info, just so you know'...........
I know I would be mightily upset if I had taken my car into a 'professional' detailers facility, only to find out afterwards that some third party was circulating my cars chassis number to whoever wanted to know - I think someone would be hearing from guys with curly wigs at that point if it was me

Missed that bit! Does sound very silly to do that.
If I went to see a car for sale and spent money on an inspection and it turned out the car had lots of damage and was being sold as mint then I am all for sharing the info to save anyone else a wasted journey.
If I had second hand information for a car that is not even for sale then I would keep it to myself.

Agree with that!
There was a thread here a while back regarding Orange GT3 RS's. They are not that common and there were a couple that were being put up for sale as 'slightly damaged' when in fact they had been severely damaged (one had been rolled and re-shelled then sold through an OPC with no mention of the damage!) That thread would have been a godsend for any potential buyer of a 997.1 GT3 RS in Orange as they were made aware of the history of the cars for sale.
I guess
that
scenario was different to
this
one as
they
were up for sale whereas this one is not.

I'm completely on board with identifying the unscrupulous - they get everything they deserve - and I would be very happy if someone on here saved me from buying a dog!!
Its like anything in life - there's a time and a place!!
Now lets get back to rooting out the unscrupulous...................so who is the detailer
haha
I was a past owner of the car above which bears a resemblance to the advertised one. The chassis number is WP0ZZZ99Z7S791268.
It showed clear signs of chassis creasing with the under tray removed and right rear wheel arch damage, with no record of Porsche approved repairs.

Back on with a more detailed history and an increase in price compared to the thread above. Was Touristfahren included in road use?
