Hi
The center grill cover (the blind one) of my 2nd gen
Cayman
got hit by a small object on the street and fall inside it's compartment (below/in the bumper). Nothing got broken but I don't know how to get the cover attachd again.
It needs to be pressed from the inside into the bumper so the plastic clamps snap into their fittings.
One possible way is to remove the whole bumper but I wonder if the front side grills containing the
LED
stripe and daylight driving lamp can't be easily removed. I can see a screw through just behind each grill but I'm not sure if it's related.
Can anyone give me a hint if and
how to remove these side grills on C987.2 please?
Sadly I don't think that you can remove the side grills on the
987.2
without removing the front bumper.
Even if you were able to remove the side grills, the side radiator area have plastic shrouds that direct air into the radiators, thus separating the area from the center portion that you are trying to access.
I removed the front bumper on my
Cayman
R last Friday to install the center radiator grill on the car, removing the bumper itself was not that hard.
If you decide to remove the front bumper, make sure to also loosen up portions of the wheel liner that goes around the wheel well area that are tied down to the front fender are by some nuts, that makes the wheel liner that is attached to the front bumper easier to remove and to install back on the car.
When installing the portion of the wheel liner that is attached to the front bumper, keep an eye to the area that fits over the diagonal metal brace that is used to support part of the front structure, that metal brace causes some interference with the plastic wheel liner and you might need to align the plastic by pushing on it with your hand.
Thanks for writing your experiences. Did you have to remove the
headlights
as well? According to the following article it appears to be mandatory:

I think I'll go to a body shop. If I'm lucky they don't have to remove all parts when the car is on the lift. It should be enough to get an arm inside to push the bezel back in place.
I had mine come loose after my bumper was painted and reinstalled. Went back to the paint/body shop and they were able to resecure the clips in 5 minutes without removing anything. Don't know the process but it is now resecured and took 5 minutes. Good luck.
Yes, you have to remove the front
headlights
to access a couple of metal clips. Removing the
headlights
is pretty straight forward relative to the removal of the front bumper.
Excellent point.
Guess you could attach some
duct tape
to the center piece and pull the center piece forward, as long as everything is aligned properly it should clip back in place. The downside is the risk of not having everything aligned when you pull the center piece forward and bending/breaking some of the plastic tabs that hold the blank piece to the bumper.
Today I went to the body shop and they were able to push the bezel back in place in 10 minutes on the lift without removing the bumper.
Glad that things worked out.
No, this is incorrect. You can remove the front bumper (and also reinstall it) without removing the headlights -- I have done it plenty of times. Those clips pull out very easily, you just need to use tool with a small hook on the end. Saves quite a bit of time to skip messing with the headlights.
maybe try a suction cup or suction mount and pull it out?
