Hey guys,
I found a local company (Los Angeles area) that has developed a 991 Turbo style headlight for our
Caymans
& Boxsters (2005-2008 only). Has anyone use dtheir lights before?
https://www.uniquestyleracings.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1010
I talked to them and got myself on the wait list for when they come out in mid-late November 2016. Also, while talking to them, they said they are willing to offer a discount to planet 9 members if we can generate enough interest. What do you guys think? Any interest?
If so, they would send a special discount code to those who are interested, but it would only be good for the first 3 weeks of release.
Unfortunately, I don't have the lights yet, but I'll post a review as soon as I get them in. I plan on getting the taillights as well, so those may come first which I'll review ASAP. I'm hoping they will perfectly accent my GT3 bumpers and black accents everywhere.
I've seen this style of light on Ebay already:
porsche 987 led headlight | eBay
Is this company claiming to have invented them or are they just building a similar style? Or worse, are they just re-selling the Ebay lights bought from China, while claiming it's their own product?
The manufacturer is in Taiwan, so I assume several people will have them to sell on ebay, but this company receives their own shipments from the manufacturer to sell.
I looked at the ebay listings and a lot of them tend to be more expensive and/or international sellers. This is the only US based retailer that I could find online that has these
headlights
.
Ok, so they're just re-selling the Tiawanese product that's already available elsewhere. Saying the company "has developed a 991 Turbo style headlight for our
Caymans
& Boxsters" isn't accurate, and you won't get any insight into the product quality by asking if people have used their lights before. I like the halo around the headlight, but overall it's not that appealing of an upgrade, especially considering the price and caveats:
- The factory headlight design looks better to me. That's a purely subjective assessment and your mileage may vary.
- These ones can't be used if you have factory halogens. This upgrade is only applicable to 987 owners who already have the factory xenons, which is a small minority.
- They don't include any of the bi-xenon components with the kit. You have to transfer all of those components over from your factory bi-xenon lights.
For $1,200+, I don't see the point...
^^^^ what he said, there's another thread about this somewhere. Seems shady/not worth it.
Looks nice! Looking forward to your review.
A guy on instagram has had these a while and posted some nice pictures to get a better idea of how they look.

You are correct. I don't believe they developed these lights, but they are purchasing them directly from the manufacturer. As a result, you don't have to deal with any other middle man or international headaches.
Personally, I like the flow of the stock turn signal better, but the halo and the black housing are what really sell me on these lights.
$1,200 does seem like a lot (before any discount we can get); however, new stock lights are WAY more expensive because they include the ballast, auto leveling etc. Heck, even 2 USED stock
headlights
are more than $1,200 on Ebay. These are cheaper than stock because we are reusing the HID stock components. I actually like this because it keeps the cost down and I would rather use/trust the stock HID pieces anyways. I don't know what the percentage of halogen vs HID lights are on our
caymans
, but I think most
caymans
are HID. I've actually never even seen a halogen
cayman
before.
1200 bucks for these and its not
plug
n' play? meaning you have to already have a Bi-Xenon
headlights
to tansfer into these new ones. as these will nto work with standard halogen lights on
987.1
's
No thanks. i put HIDs in my
headlights
for 180 bucks and work just fine.
A pair of new HID's is $2,600. I think the point of these is to upgrade your HIDs to the look of newer models. Yes, you have to use some of the factory components, but it keeps costs down. I would rather pay $1,200 and reuse stock parts rather than pay twice as much to have
plug
n play. This is similar to the
LED
fog light spars or the
LED
taillights that were created a couple years ago to give the
LED
look of newer Porsches. If we can get a decent enough discount, I think they could be worth it. They also have the
LED
taillights and
LED
side markers on their site as well.
Anyways, I digress. If we can get these for a discount under $1,200, would anyone be interested?
I bought a HID kit for 180 bucks that fits in standard halogen housing. It is as bright and projects just like factory HID.
My
LED
tail lights cost half of what these
led lights
are. They were 550 .
Yes, any car can add HID's to their standard halogen lights for cheap, but you don't have all of the features of the factory HID's.
This isn't for upgrading to HID. These are for upgrading your HID's to look like the 991 Turbo with the angel eye.
The taillights on this site are $560. Who knows, maybe we could even get them to discount those if enough people are interested?
they don't seem to have an option for vehicles with factory installed halogens, am i right?
That is correct. These reuse some of the stock HID components, so they are for factory Xenon/HID equipped
Caymans
only.
Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let you know, the lights came in earlier than I thought! I installed them this weekend and wrote up an article. I'll take more pictures tonight and post them.
http://www.planet-9.com/reviews/cay...-motorwerks-unique-style-racing-987-991-turbo-halo-style-headlight-install.html
Alright, here are a few pics of the lights. I also got the
LED
taillights which are now one of my favorite upgrades. They completely modernize the car. I went with the black headlight housings because I have several black accents on my car with the
GT3
front/rear bumpers. The halo effect is great and really separates the car from others. My main complaint is the turn signal. The design does look a little out of place and doesn't flow very well. Other than that, the lights works great. In all, it took me about 2 hours from start to finish to install them with minimal difficulty. If you're interested in the lights, just post here so I can try to get them to discount the lights for us Planet 9ers. I attached a few images.
The first photo shows the stock light vs the new halo light. Stock on the left, halo on the right.

Congratulations - I'm glad you like the upgrade! You've ended up with a pretty unique looking
Cayman
.
Also, I just found out that our group buy price would probably be closer to $900, a discount of $400. That would be huge savings for us.
Hey guys, I got the code for us to use on the
headlights
. Just in time for black Friday/holidays! This is only for Planet-9 members and will reduce the price to the $900 discount.

I've only seen one car with these installed. Would like to know if anyone else has installed, any issues? Anyone driving the
LED
halo off the parking light circuit?
Ok, I took the plunge and also ordered a set of the JTEC V2
981
-style tail lights. My DEPO V1
LED
tail lights will probably be up for sale.
I'm loving your booty! Damn nice job sir

Alrighty, these Sonar lights/housings are not
plug
-and-play with my 2005 BS. The connector for the headlight adjustment motor (self-leveling) does not match the connector provided. So I cut off the connector on the OEM harness so it would continue to mate with the OEM motor - really didn't have a choice there. It was impossible to know which way to connect the 4 wires as the OEM wire colors are different than the Sonar wire colors. Also, the OEM left colors are different from the OEM right colors. But the Sonar colors are the same on both sides. So I figured it's either 1 2 3 4 or 4 3 2 1. Well, both didn't work on either side. I'm getting the "Headlight Beam Adjustment Fault" and neither light self-levels.
I don't see a fuse labeled for the headlight adjustment, so I assume it's controlled by the front control unit.
Question: Should I try the other possible combinations of 4 wires, or have I damaged the motors, or what?
Edit: Sleep helped. Of course, I'll use a multi-meter to figure out the OEM pin assignments.
I've been sick, and we've had bad weather, so I finally got back to the
headlights
a couple days ago. I've learned a few things:
1.
Porsche
did indeed put different leveling motors in later 987's, and the replacement part can be ordered with a cable/connector conversion.
2. I know #1 because I have a broken leveling motor, and have ordered a replacement. I'm pretty sure only one of the motors is broken. And I'm pretty sure - mostly sure - that it was my fault due to an accidental improper install of the high-beam bulb. By having the connector 180 degrees off, it partially impeded the travel of the hinged mechanism that moves to level the lights. Repeated self-tests probably permanently damaged the motor. I took it apart and could not see how it is broken, but it doesn't work properly and throws a code every time.
3. You really have to get these lights perfectly seated before you lock them in place. And locking them in place takes a lot more effort than the OEM housings. If you don't get them well seated, you can lose some connectivity with the pins. Worst case you get no lights, in some cases just my turn signal wouldn't work.
4. The height adjustment screw on at least one of my housings doesn't appear to do anything. This is troubling because in the housing that has [what I hope is] the good leveling motor, the beam is still aimed very high. At 10m the top cutoff of the beam is 4.5ft high. I've contacted the manufacturer on this one.
5. I've had to open up the housings a dozen or more times each whether dealing with the wire mapping, the bulb issue, motor problems, etc. Eventually, even being careful, the screws that secure it closed (5 of them) can and will strip out on the plastic. The plastic just isn't real durable with the screw holes. I've had to fill a couple of them to allow the screws to bite enough to get a solid latching.
6. The
LED
halos aren't that bright. Could this be how I have them wired, running off the parking lights instead of say the fog lights?
I have to wait a few days to get the replacement leveling motor. I'm hoping that solves my error code issue. I'm concerned I can't adjust the beam height, so I hope there is a solution for that - it's pretty much a deal breaker, or maybe I have a defective housing.
#4 Height adjustment screw appears to be user error - the OEM headlight tool does not work/fit, so I need a long phillips screwdriver to adjust while the lights are in the car.
#6 Halo brightness is not dependent on input. They are not bright enough to function as DRL IMO.
#1 Got the new leveling motor (and adapter cable).
#2 I replaced what I thought was a broken leveling motor with the new motor. No change in error codes. In fact, I put the old motor back and have determined it is working properly.
#3 Still true.
#5 I've opened the housings up so many times to adjust wires, motors, etc. that now I've stripped 3 of 10. I'm REALLY careful. At least they're plastic and I can just use slightly larger threaded screws as replacements.
So right now I'm stuck. And I'm frustrated. I'm firmly of the belief that almost no one owns and has installed these housings, because they're so finicky that just about everyone would encounter an issue or two. No matter what I do I get the "Headlight Beam Adjustment Fault".
Where did you
plug
your halo into for Halo power? Wherever that is, I would ensure that it is delivering power properly. I didn't tap into my fog lights very well at first, which would lead to my halo light not working. Once I firmly tapped the wire, it worked great. I never received any codes though.
Just did this lighting upgrade as well. Many thanks to Green Bean for the write-up as well as discount code! I wouldn't say the install was easy, but it was definitely reasonable and mostly intuitive. Took me between 2-3 hours as I was taking my time.
Overall, I'm very pleased with how it looks.
Is there a way when installing to use original turn signals which I agree look better?
