Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1Original post

Change your dealer, get some good stuff then have another look. I really am intrigued by it,haven't driven one yet,but spent 20 mins crawling over one yesterday looking for clues to what the 997 may bring to us.

POST 2Original post

I saw my first Cayenne today and have to say it doesnt look any better in the flesh. Oh dear, probably a good job I'm not in the market for one. May be it would look better with snorkel, bumper mounted winch, roof mounted spotlights and covered head to toe in mud.

POST 3Original post

I think it looks better to the eye of the beholder if you are considering an estate car or 4x4 in the first place. We are looking for an estate as a 2nd car but, the though, hmmmm could the cayenne do the job, yes, and its a porker.Yes makes it more attractive to us. If you are only looking for a sports car then the cayenne wont appeal, but if you need a load carrier then it does.

POST 4Original post

Yeah, I liked the reviews, almost justified the idea of one to myself as a great all round sensible car, then saw one in the metal a couple of times. Still a pig ugly car. Maybe if you lived with it you'd get used to the looks.

POST 5Original post

Don't know what you're talking about, I like it. The cheaper models actually look better, because of the dark paint below the sill line. Sadly the Turbo does not have this, making it a bit lardy arsed. Saw plenty in Florida, certainly the hard working Floridian's SUV weapon of choice right now.

POST 6Original post

I worry about you sometimes Greg. Must be that Florida sun giving you heat stroke, or maybe your sunglasses were made FOR Ray Charles not BY Ray Ban

POST 7Original post

LOL Awww, thanks for your concern, Dom. I'm touched. Hey, EVO lapped Bedford as fast as an M3 in one - QED. And for bangs for your buck, not much comes close (unless you want some rebadged VW clone). The front is a bit of an erm, acquired taste, shall we say. But when you're inside the thing, who cares?

POST 8Original post

Your right it is a bit of an ugly mobile! But it didn't stop me buying one, should have it for my trade stand at Piston Fest so come have a look and we'l all say UUGLEEEEE EEEEW together LOL These days the spec costs more than the car They handle like a dream though, best SUV ive ever driven. Can't wait until the turbo arrives! should be entertaining.

POST 9Original post

Thing is look at the price of the thing in comparison to a 996TT....For build costs Porsche share 996 parts for the Bosxst where possible. The running gear has been around for years so was mostly paid for. The development costs of K-N at the moment must be huge, different body, suspension type not to mention the V8 Turbo engine.Hopefully this will go into more interesting cars in the future. Taking this into account the K-N looks a bargain...or are Porsche overcharging for the 996TT,just because it can take on and win against rivals at £150k plus.

POST 10Original post

The fact that it's damn ugly won't stand in the way of housewives after the badge.

POST 11Original post

I saw a trailer load of Porsche's on the M25 the other day on their way to get delivered. All the Cayennes (but none of the other cars) were zipped into big white bags. Could this be in case they cause an accident as other drivers all reach for their sick bags? Chris >> Edited by Chris_N on Friday 6th June 10:33

POST 12Original post

Ugly for sure but who builds a pretty SUV? At least it doesn't look like a taxi or corner like a 2CV! Just tell me what can haul family + 2 dogs on green lanes & tarmac an looks as good as a 2.7 RS & I'll cancel the order!

POST 13Original post

Audi RS6? Now they are LUUVVV-ER-LEEE! Quick, time to get down to the OPC and tell them the bad news Chris

POST 14Original post

One came up behind me on the way home last night, so I slowed down a bit and pulled over to let it past and have a look. My first one! And there probably won't be many more since they cost around €166,000 here (or around £115,000 of your UK pounds) It was black, and looked like a beached whale Odd from the front, side and back, and accompanied by much tyre noise through my open window... I'd still have one though

POST 15Original post

Agreed, and it could have looked good if they had not tried to cloth it like a pig ugly 996.

POST 16Original post

Chris, Yep, I thought that but I actually think the styling a bit bland - and I can get all the options I want on the Cayenne S and save about £5k on the price of the Audi, and the higher ground clearance is useful. Nice car - but not for me.

POST 17Original post

You're probably spot on with respect to Audi blandness. Though I've never driven an RS6 (out of my price range) I did nearly buy a used RS4 recently. While hugely capable it left me a bit unexcited ultimately. I decided to get a used V8 Grand Cherokee for my load/dog hauler (quite good fun in a crude sort of way) and save the balance for upgrading my 930 to a 993TT at some (hopefully not to distant) point. While I've quite enjoyed slagging off the Cayenne's looks you've got to respect 444bhp and lap times to match an M3! I'm sure you'll have a ball and hopefully share on here what it's like. When do you take delivery? And anyway, maybe you'll have the last laugh with respect to the looks, after all everyone hated the latest 7 series when it first came out and it's starting to grow on me now (surely I'm not the only one?) Chris

POST 18Original post

Ah, yes, the Cayenne......interior looks as though they've raided the Audi parts bin. More than a passing similarity to the Hyundai Santa Fe?? A prize for the first person to spot one off road up to the top of the wheel arches in mud!! That's where MY 4x4 belongs..... Melv

POST 19Original post

Melv, if the mud's at the top of the arches and your still moving forward you have my respect. Thats not quite my scene, if it was I'd buy a Unimog, but reasonable ground clearance, towing & load carrying do figure. If its the Audi parts bin I guess thats ok - didn't do Bentley to much harm this weekend! All credit to the GT3 guys but where were the front running Porsches. Chris, October - I can live with the looks from the inside anyway!

POST 20Original post

bishop, How right you are... all 4x4s are ugly I have little respect for the people who buy them for anything other than off road use. They buy them for presence, status, the ability to sit higher and feel bigger, and of course because they want to be 7 times more likely to kill the person in the car they crash into.

POST 21Original post

Yawn, you're not one of those narrow minded tree hugger types thinks they should all be banned are you? I couldn't possibly consider taking mine of road, I'm worried in case I crush any pretty flowers. yes, yes, and yes! I guess you're going to tell me I must be some kind of inadequate little twit now. But of course presence and status had nothing whatsoever to do with your decision to purchase a 996 did they? You're purely interested in the driving experience. Oh oh, you're definitely a tree hugger, you're quoting tedious statistics to support your arguments about what others should and shouldn't do. You should think things through to their natural conclusion before telling others what to think. If my 4x4 gets banned, your outrageously immoral 996 won't be far behind. And cries that you only drive fast on track days and are really a very safe driver will count for nothing with the thought police.

POST 22Original post

TheBishop -I've got a pic somewhere of my 4x4 with a muddy tidal wave going up the bonnet to the windscreen, and we're still moving!!!!! See if I can find it and post it. I bought an old Pajero to tow my race car, and then discovered another toy. What a tool!!!! After I've removed the mud it will still cruise at 80 in peace and quiet on the motorway. If u haven't lived with one of these vehicles, don't underestimate them!! Came in to it's own in January with the snow and floods around here (Egham, Surrey). Unimog -amazing vehicle -drove one off road a couple of weeks ago. It's the size of a lorry, pre-select gearbox makes it SO easy to drive, and bags of torque, practically went around all the course on tickover! Melv

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Blimey its getting more like the sub 18yr olds kindergarden playground over on General Gassing on here. Now boys if you can't play nicely you know the moderators will be in here with a big stick and they will make you stand in the corner with a big D written on ya cap Anyway only Rubystone and I are allowed to have the occasional girly handbag session on the Porsche forum- its in the rules

POST 24Original post

Chris N and petepeter's posts have been left up after narrowly avoiding the electronic dunce's cap - a binned sticker Both the pro-4x4 and anti-4x4 lobbies have made their points, albeit in a slightly inflammatory way. Horses for courses at the end of the day. Any escalation of abuse on this topic or a iguana/rubstone stylee handbag session will result in a locked thread.

POST 25Original post

Fair play. I shouldn't have risen to the bait really. It's just so tempting when someone takes such a high and mighty tone on what is generally such a friendly forum. I promise I'll be good now. I don't think I'm ready yet for the stigma of having been binned! Chris

POST 26Original post

LOL, being binned is indeed a dubious honour Most people play friendly and fair, but it only takes a little bad blood to spoil the forum for others. As soon as a spat develops, the moderators go in with the rubber batons and then it all goes even more awry Some other forums have had these problems in the past, and myself, Daz and sb930 would prefer it not to degenerate into another candidate for the forthcoming ITV show: 'When threads go wrong.' ATB Domster

POST 27Original post

Chris N ... the only reason I have a 996 is for track days .. and touring holidays. In fact most of the driving miles I do are track days. Also have a westfield too. Again track days only. I hardly ever use it otherwise. I didnt buy it for status or to be seen in. I bought it to drive and have fun in. Likewise I would only buy a 4x4 if I actually needed it for off road driving ... not to look big and sit high up and kill pedestrians. Unfortunately a good friend of mine was killed in his car by a 4x4 driver not so long ago. Police said that if he had been hit by a normal car he might have survived, but because the shogun was so high it impacted through the window and gave him severe head injuries. the driver was a mother on a school run. You can call me what you like, but actually I love cars and always will. But I can see no need for vehicles that big and heavy, with useless brakes and dodgy handling being used for trips like school runs.

POST 28Original post

"You can call me what you like, but actually I love cars and always will. But I can see no need for vehicles that big and heavy, with useless brakes and dodgy handling being used for trips like school runs." ^^^^^^ You see no need Ok dont buy one then but why should we have to be the same as you ? Peter do you think the new M3 has dodgy brakes and handling? because in a magazine review the cayene did exactly the same lap time round a track. How did it do that with dodgy brakes? have you driven one? I would love a cayenne they look fab in my opinion would be ideal to lug the kids and all the gear around. and it would be a perfect match for the other fantasy cars in my garage If I had one I wouldnt look to go off roading on purpose but who knows you may end up somewhere in teh countryside and think I'll give it a go ps if you only use the 996 for the track could you lend ot to me in between thanks Edited to add if people buy them to kill pedestrians did you buy a car to kill motorcylists? I dont think your argument makes sense vive la difference sh!t im trying to speak french now see what this web site is doing to me >> Edited by pesty on Friday 20th June 01:13

POST 29Original post

Still waiting for the moderator with a big stick....... Melv

POST 30Original post

Well, it doesn't deserve the big stick treatment just yet, Melv Maybe just a small one. The 4x4 discussion is quite interesting - especially as the Cayenne has just blurred the boundaries between plodding mud pluggers like Landies and modern sportscars (Cayenne has similar or better performance and handling compared to many low slung saloons or coupes). However, let's not allow this to degenerate into personal axe-grinding or hysterical hypothesis. It is a tragedy when anyone dies on the roads, but blaming it on a quite legal, if sometimes irrelevant, class of vehicle is pretty nonsensical when the roads are full of machines that are much more lethal. Like 40 ton articulated lorries. Also, please try and keep the discussion somewhat relevant to the Cayenne, as it was originally a Cayenne thread not a general 4x4 one. Cheers Domster

POST 31Original post

pesty, spot on - Domster, wise words in an effort to do just that, here's a thought... With the not too distant arrival of the 997, widely rumoured to be moving back to the more conventional 993 type look, will there be a facelifted Cayenne to: a) keep it consistent with the new family look? b) address the criticisms of the looks (in the same way BMW are reported to be about to do with the 7 series)? Anyone heard anything? Chris

POST 32Original post

I am not saying these cars should be banned. I was only expressing my opinion , which obviously riled some of you, that I don't like them. Am I not allowed to express my opinion? As the cayenne. Well funny enough, this is the only one I would consider buying because it handles so well, it is probably the safest to drive too. Most other 4x4s other than the X5/new range rover handle like poo and have appalling braking distances. Domster, with all due respect, we NEED 40 ton articulated lorries on the road. They provide a vital delivery service. We dont need to drop a 3 year old at school in a 2 and a half ton tank. As I said, I am not saying "ban these cars". I am just surprised that people feel the need to have to own one for whatever reason they have.

POST 33Original post

When has ‘need’ and Porsche ever been used in the same sentence without great handfuls of irony. I don’t ‘need’ to live like I run a high class ‘party’ agency, but I do. Why? Because I can, and I want to >> Edited by ultra violent on Friday 20th June 14:34

POST 34Original post

Of course you are, within reason. Your comments were a tad inflammatory to those who read these pages with 4x4s. If I said 'Boxsters are pants' that is an opinion, but one that could offend many Boxster owners out there. So you have to couch an opinion carefully, with due respect to others. Even a simple and honest observation could be inflammatory, so it is best to tread carefully
As the cayenne. Well funny enough, this is the only one I would consider buying because it handles so well, it is probably the safest to drive too. Most other 4x4s other than the X5/new range rover handle like poo and have appalling braking distances.
I would like to see it off road. If it acquitted itself then great, but isn't the Cayenne just like a tall and boxy 928 hatchback? Maybe Porsche should have dropped the off road pretence completely and made it more like a normal car? Dunno.
Domster, with all due respect, we NEED 40 ton articulated lorries on the road. They provide a vital delivery service. We dont need to drop a 3 year old at school in a 2 and a half ton tank.
It's a good point, but what about moving freight onto trains and freeing up the roads? There's always a counter argument. Some people would also argue that their 4x4s are invaluable as they offer more crash protection to the occupants (their precious kiddies) and command a better view of the road ahead. They may also live up a steep hill or rough road that becomes difficult to pass in winter. To these people they are as indispensable as lorries are to hauliers. Personally, I'd like to see more school buses, car sharing etc. The school run thing totally gets my goat as traffic is ten times worse where I live during term time mornings.
As I said, I am not saying "ban these cars". I am just surprised that people feel the need to have to own one for whatever reason they have.
They are probably surprised you can't see the benefits It is horses for courses, as ever. Sorry about the banning issue being implied or stated incorrectly. To be honest, I agree with you re school run and irrelevance of most 4x4s. Sadly, our society revolves around style, fashion and sheer overkill as much as function, utility and reserved understatement. Which is why I have a Porsche Siemens kettle which is rubbish, when a Morphy Richards one would have worked better for half the price. To use a little more French, c'est la vie! Regards Domster

POST 35Original post

Well I just saw a Cayenne Turbo in Stoke Poges and thought it looked OK. Better than the S, anyway. Mind you, it was black exterior, black interior, driving along a shaded road...

POST 36Original post

Been away for a few days and come bach to see people so steamed up! Thank God for the voice of reason - Domster. Personal opinions or not I'm buying the Cayenne S, it will replace a 'quick' saloon and a proper MB 'cross country' vehicle - it won't replace the other Porsche. As to the mention 40 or 44 tonners. We might need them since rail freight is defunct, but consider, what kills is dissipating large amounts of energy (mass X square of velocity)so to give other road users the same chance of survival as a car crash at 30mph they should be limited to about 10mph in towns !! any takers? Ooops, sorry chaps fell over my soapbox again.

Am I a bit emporahs new clothes with these? as I know lots of you guys like em, but I really feel the Cayenne is posibly the most unattractive and ugly vehicle on the roads, in fact I am struggling to think of a more unattractive vehicle, I almost prefer the looks of the bug eyed Fiat Multipla!! Yes I know it goes like a rocket & will out handle many a sportscar from other manufacturers and will have all the engineering and know how built into it as Porsche do best, but man will I ever get my head round the looks??
