My Indie then installed a 95AH Bosch Silver which he fits as standard (largest you can physically fit) and has never had any problems with them over many years.

I did charge the battery to 12.6v last night, this morning it is 12.3v, when running using a volt meter on the batter it reads 13.5 so I am assuming the generator is working OK, I will try to keep a check on it over the next day or so but I think a new battery is required.

Welcome aboard the forum, fraid my tech knowledge is pretty crap, but you will soon be reading some really useful hints from others on the forum. For what its worth I was plagued by battery losing charge for the first few months of ownership, replaced battery-no change, then my garage traced it to an obsolete tracker device fitted by a previous owner-we disconnected it -problem solved.

I eventually had to replace the battery, Alternator and re-do the connections to the starter (corrosion).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi this is all new to me the site and the car if anyone can shed some light on a recent event please let me know
I have just purchased a 996 Millennium 1999 V in great shape however this morning the new/recent battery was totally flat, so I connected a charger and a few hours later started the car only to find that the fuel gauge is on 0 and it was half full the night before!
so questions
what drained the battery over night? there were no lights on in the car however the seat heater light was on! but i thought this would only work with the ignition, any ideas?
now its charged up I am assuming the fuel gauge is wrong but not checked this any further what could I do to check this?
thanks for any thoughts Paul

The day I picked my car up the owner told me the fuel gauge had stopped working that day ? Even though he had put £30 of fuel in it still hard red light on showing empty, to make sure I filled it to the brim for my jurney home 180 miles ?
Same all the way home red light
Next day all Ok and has been ever since.
Hopefully your will be the same :thumb:
The fuel tank in a 4wd variant (so C4, C4S, turbo) is a different shape to accommodate the extra driveshaft for the driven front wheels - think of it as a shallow 'n' shape with the drive going underneath the 'bridge' of the 'n'.
So once the fuel gets below the top of the 'n' and in to just the sides it will not record a correct level. If you fill to over the 'bridge' of the 'n' it will register, but if you only put, say, £20 in from empty it won't register.
Not sure if the millenium is 4wd or not, but that will probably answer your question, bently... :thumb:
No I did brim it so to speak and still red light :?: then next day all ok and same ever since so not a problem for me now, I was just trying to say that sometimes these issue sort them selves out all on their own for no apparent reason :dont know:
Ah, ok - gotcha. Must admit mine has flashed up 'Check brake wear' or something similar a couple of times, even though it had new disks and pads this time last year and they are still absolutely fine (disks look like new and pads thicker than my front door).
Does it every couple of months, just to keep me on my toes...
It wouldn't be just a 'tracker', you would need 6-8Amps drain to flattern your battery over night (12hrs), thats full beam, radio, blower on etc!! A tracker can't be more then a few 10's mA's.
I've had problems lately with the battery going flat.. I have a tracker and I get 200mA drain for the first few hours then it drops off and finally drops down to a few mA when the car sleeps (5days) I've logged the current drain over a few weeks
Your battery must be dead to go overnight.....
I eventually had to replace the battery, Alternator and re-do the connections to the starter (corrosion).
Sorry....oh yes, Welcome to 996 ownership :thumb:

13.5v when running is fine...
12.6V engine off is fully charged, 12.3V is 50% charged..anythng below 12V is a dead battery.
You could trying turning things on like lights, heaters etc, you shouldn't see the voltage drop....
Is it a MOLL  (Porsche Battery). They are crap!
Do you have a warranty with the car? everything should be covered for at least 3 months :?:
:bye:
I took the car to a auto electrician today who firstly told me the battery (a Bosch) was too small by 20 a/h but in good condition! still running it about as is until I can find a good battery any suggestions? also it was a private purchase with no warranty so no comeback there, while I'm on soon will need a pair of rear tyres and I cannot find any Michelin Pilots locally 285/30/18 to suit, I did purchase a pair for an internet shop, only to be told 6-8 weeks delivery so took a refund, now looking at other brands, any suggestions?
I was in Costo last night and they have good selection od Bosch Silver batteries much cheaper that Halfrawds and their tyre bay might be worth look too, mine had an impressive amount of Michy rubber in (PS3) and were cheaper than my local garage. When i compared my Audi 225/40/18s they were 30 notes cheaper a corner fitted!!!
996 Flat Battery
I had a brand new Porsche battery which lasted under 2 years! They seem to be a waste of space so don't go for one of those.
My Indie then installed a 95AH Bosch Silver which he fits as standard (largest you can physically fit) and has never had any problems with them over many years. About £95 inc vat. The car starts beautifully first time now even without using the CTEC trickle charger. :thumb:
So my advice: get the biggest Bosch battery you can afford.

David
