Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I thought it was the battery so drove to Halfords as the battery was still under warantee. They replaced the battery but on the way home was still showing 11.5.
Leading evidence: 'Replace battery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'battery' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check water pump' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Change the aux drive belt when you are in there and check the water pump.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi
Just driving back about 75 miles noticed voltmeter dropping. got as far as 11.5 volts before I arrived home.
No funny noises or anything. Luckily car is due in for service on Friday. Could this be anything other than alternator? ie could belts be it? had a new battery 1 year ago.
Presumably I need to charge the battery prior to driving 100 miles for service. Not sure if 11 and a half odd volts would start it when cold?
Any advice or ever better reassurance appreciated!
Almost certainly the regulator on your alternator....about 2 hrs to remove, fit new alternator or regulator and re-fit. Don't drive it or you will be a roadside recovery. You get approx 40 mins on a charged battery before the car chucks it.
The main support bolt and bush on the alternator is bi*ch to refit. Only use a soft mallet or wooden block to re-align it or risk damage. Change the aux drive belt when you are in there and check the water pump. Careful when removing the MAF on the l/h intake as easily damaged and an expensive little part.
Q; Did you wash the car beforehand or were you driving in heavy rain?
It was in heavy rain. Does that make a difference?
Not sure what to do, I have no way of doing it DIY here and is 90 minutes to GT One.
No warning lights by the way
And how low does the voltage go before the engine management has a problem?
Mine done the same. Would drop to about 10.5 when stuck in traffic but back up to about 11.5-12 when pushing on and getting some cold air blown in there.
Ended up getting a new alternator fitted. About £600 ish if I remember right.
40 mins.....a bit longer if you switch
off all the electrics.
. air con, heater, wipers lights etc(to keep power to the ignition/ecu)The regulator can fry if water gets into the alternator....re heavy duty washing or driving in the rain.
What you could do is charge another spare battery Min(80 amps) take it with you (+ the tools) and be prepared to swap the batteries over. Get someone to follow you and stay off the motorway if possible. Clearly if you are doing this make sure you charge the in-situ batt to the max before setting off.
Alternatively...get it to someone closer.
The ABS light start to flicker(first sign of an issue)...after that you have about 15-20 mins before the car stops.
A new alternator is about £500(they don't sell just the regulators). I got my regulator from Germany for £30. Yes it's a risk if its not the regulator but it usually is unless the car has done lots of miles on it's orig alternator?
The 997 uses the same high output alternator so a breakers could be an option.

Just remember that the TIPTRONIC and MANUAL cars use a different alternator!
Same thing happened to me.The volt meter was showing 11.5 instead of 14. I thought it was the battery so drove to Halfords as the battery was still under warantee. They replaced the battery but on the way home was still showing 11.5.

...just make sure they know what they are doing as it's certainly not like changing one on a Ford Fiesta.
If they hammer the lower pin sleeve/bush or lever in the wrong place when re-fitting you could be in ££££trouble.
I took about -0.5mm off the sleeve bush to get it back on the mount...most just hammer the alternator back on and can sometimes damage/crack the mount...£££ouch!
Be VERY careful who you entrust this work to :bye:
running out of options. can see the sense in not letting some local numpty look at it in case they damage things but 90 minutes at least away from a specialist
