I checked the plate on my 996.1 and that shows as 2 seats.

I've just checked the VIN / Compliance plate on my 2004 GT3 Touring (no rear / front roll cage) and the VIN plate definitely says 2 seats.

That may be because the rego inspector filled the form out as 4 seats.....

Reason I ask is Autohause Hamilton said to me yesterday that the only GT3's in Australia that show as 4 seats were special orders from Porsche as 4 seaters and actually had the rear seats installed from delivery time.

Suggestion
I think I may have an answer for you, but I have to go past and check my car, my car is a factory roll cage car with fixed seats ( only slide back and forth and no tilt ) so I'm pretty sure its says 2 seater on the plate, its probably the fact that the "touring" version doesn't have these that make it flexible to be able to make into a four seater, I think their was a white one up for sale a couple of years ago on Carsales.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I've been doing my own research on this topic, I wanted to put all i've learnt and see if anyone disagree's or seen otherwise. I've been speaking with
jzmporsche.com
in the UK that have some actual
experience
in this area. I'm just limiting this
thread
to 997 GT3's, as the ones after the 997 its pretty
impossible
to do all this. If you do a google image search you'll see plenty of people have done this before.
In-fact
I heard that in Germany,
Porsche
would
do a special order to fit and install belts and seats, 997 only.
GT3 997.1
Fit rear seat belts
Buy rear belts and all bolt fixings, cut away holes in carpet and screw into the holes in the chassis.
Fit rear seats
Buy seats, lower one just sits with Velcro on the carpet, but need to
salvage
and weld on the upper metal latch the seat backs attach to, Porsche wont sell this part to you.
GT3 997.2
Fit rear seat belts
Buy rear belts and all bolt fixings, there are no bolt fixings in the centre tunnel between the seats, the Punched holes have been welded over you will need to make load spreader plates with nuts welded to them, these fit to the body above the gearbox. In summary not easy.
Fit rear seats
Same as the 997/1 bascally. Buy seats, lower one just sits with Velcro on the carpet, but need to
salvage
and weld on the upper metal latch the seat backs attach to, Porsche wont sell this part to you.
RS cars
The RS cars are no different, its just they all come with the roll-cage in the back, so no-one would likely be interested to do this.
Insurance/police inspection topic
Its funny as most of the Aussie sites like Redbook list the 997.1 GT3 as a 4 seater, but the 996 and 997.2 and onwards as a 2 seater.
From a police inspection POV, if a policeman roadside inspected and saw 2 child seats in the back all looking secure (you can see where im going here), they wouldn't question it I feel confident. I've spoken to a few in Australia that have 911's with child seats in the back, no issues with roadside police inspections.
I think I remember reading a post from
@James P
when he was selling his 997.1 that his was registered as a four seater, where as not all are. That would make the difference as to whether you'd run into legal troubles I'd imagine.
I’ve looked to buy a 997 GT3 with this in mind. The unfortunate truth is that I arguably drive my 912 too fast with the kids in the back. A GT3 is just baiting me more so as the worst parent of the decade when I get pulled up for speeding, sitting on the side of the road with my 3 boys watching the car get loaded onto a flat bed and having to call mum to pick us up............kids complaining that they are hungry, people driving past and taunting me with their angry gaze (or laughing).
So, yeh, sorry, what was the question again?
If your VIN plate states that it seats 2 i think it will be very difficult to legally install rear seats, but if it's like the 997 gt3 VIN plate below then it should be ok
You can get it engineered as a 4 seater later as long as it all complies with safety. Particularly if the factory anchor points are still there. I have done the reverse (engineered a 4 seater down to 2) and I have also had new seat belt points that I fabricated myself engineered to be road legal.
You could do it, but as Hugh said, do you really want or need to?
I think I may have an answer for you, but I have to go past and check my car, my car is a factory roll cage car with fixed seats ( only slide back and forth and no tilt ) so I'm pretty sure its says 2 seater on the plate, its probably the fact that the "touring" version doesn't have these that make it flexible to be able to make into a four seater, I think their was a white one up for sale a couple of years ago on Carsales.
An important point in Peter 996 post.
Front seats must be able to tilt forward to enable rear seat passengers ingress/egress.
Rear seat head room is also critical. A roll bar will likely be an obstacle.
it’s not just about being able to bolt in seats and belts. The whole passenger environment needs to be compliant.
Has anyone heard of rear belts being fitted by any workshops in Aus?
Or any recommendation of a good Porsche workshop in Sydney?
From the explanations it seems as easy to buy the belts, cut the small holes in the carpet and screw them in, bit if there's a local workshop that could do it for me I'd be interested.
My 996.1 GT3 Touring / Comfort had rear seatbelts fitted at some stage in the past. Pretty sure it would have been done by PCM as they did all the maintenance work on the car. My Tas rego shows it as a 4 seater. That may be because the rego inspector filled the form out as 4 seats.....
Just checked, mine is a registered 2 seater, may also be a sneaky way to check is the car is factory clubsport or touring when purschasing, may put a few claims to rest ( could be wrong as the cost of seats and cage is ridiculous from Porsche to try and turn from a tourer into a Clubbie )
Insurance is another aspect of this.
If you carry passengers & are involved in an accident, that would be a way for an Insurance Co. to weasel out of paying. A bit like drunk driving.
Now, here comes the curve ball !!!!
My old 1999 996 GT3 was a registered 2 seater, it was a touring model aswell but was ordered from factory with fixed recaro leather buckets.
I would presume to comply with ADR if its got fixed back seats it would be registered as a 2 seater for safety purposes etc.
I've been trying to find a photo of the plate but cant.
I've just checked the VIN / Compliance plate on my 2004 GT3 Touring (no rear / front roll cage) and the VIN plate definitely says 2 seats. This is reflected on the Qld rego doc's too....
Hmm pretty far for me to go, im in Sydney.
Ideally i'm looking for a good Porsche workshop in Sydney who can buy the genuine 997 rear seat belts and fit them for me, not interested in the rear seats at this stage, just the belts.
If I cant find anyone, I have the Porsche part number here somewhere and could have a go myself as they are just screw in.
As you're in Sydney I'd suggest you talk to James at Autohaus Hamilton in Chatswood.
Perhaps one of the other 997 owners can advise whether the mountings are even fitted to the car as original, or whether these fittings would need to be welded in first (eg the bolt on the tunnel for the short buckle strap)??
Yes that is the thread that started this idea for me
They are there, under the carpet. Will speak to Autohaus Hamilton, cheers, they are very close to where I live.
This is a photo from a overseas GT3, the front seats in the non Clubsport model go forwards yes?
I've compiled all of my research so far into this PDF. Have sent to Autohaus Hamilton workshop team to enquire if they would be willing to complete this job.

Fetching info...
I believe this is somewhat common on the 997's if they are non CS?
PR Technology just did a 997.2 GT3 for a friend here in Sydney... give them a call, I am sure if you talk to Richard or Paul they will know the spill. But that friend did say he had the 4 seat compliance plate like James' car did, so no need for an engineers report.... I could check my 7.1 for you too if its a 4 seat compliance as it was a non CS originally.
Yes please. Just spoke with Autohaus Hamilton in Syd, and they said if it doesn't show 4 seater on the compliance plate, they wont touch the car for this mod.
I also jsut sent an email to
PR Technology, you've got em excited
here is my Aussie compliance tag, mine is complied as a 2 seater only.... not sure how they discern between what could get the 2 & 4 seats compliance...
Interested to hear from others that have 997 GT3's touring spec if they have 2 or 4 seats on their compliance plates?
Pls list if its a 997.1 or .2 and its year also to help?
I've had 2x 2007 997.1 GT3's both non clubsport one had 4 on the compliance plate & the other had 2
Here is 3x GT3 compliance plates, all GT cars have the 5th last digit of the VIN as number 9
This is interesting... how did some manage out as 4 seaters when others didnt? is this potentially an anomaly where they copy/pasted incorrect information from a Carrera etc??
I think another good data point is to put the month/year and see if there is any correlation.
Reckon you might be right Kurt. I checked the plate on my 996.1 and that shows as 2 seats. Surprises me that PCM were prepared to add in the rear belts (mind you this was probably 10-15 years ago), whereas AH weren't for mbedford
Hey guys, any of you that show 'seats 4' in your GT3's, do they have rear seats now? or is there any evidence it had rear seats and they were removed?
Reason I ask is Autohause Hamilton said to me yesterday that the only GT3's in Australia that show as 4 seats were special orders from Porsche as 4 seaters and actually had the rear seats installed from delivery time.
Any more 997 GT3 owners that shows 'seats 4'? keen to hear.
Quote update from PR Technology in Brookvale, Sydney. Richard there is very knowledgeable on this subject with just recently doing this fitment on a GT3 997.2
I’m presuming the
Red
items are only required for the GT3 997.1 so total =
$
18,340
And the
Red
items are only required for the GT3 997.2 so total =
$
21,120
I presume these are all inc GST prices as it wasn’t marked up on the quote.
Labour side of it doesn't seem too crazy, the new Porsche parts certainly are
😳
I wonder what that parts list is, and if you could save some $$$ by getting it from a used car in a dismantler?
In the PDF I posted earlier in in this topic it listed all the rear belt parts, plus on top all the parts for the seats, all official Porsche parts, plus they are custom building the metal plate that the top seat latches onto, this is not a part you can order from Porsche, only salvaged from a wrecked 911, or fabricate the part from scratch, which is what they are doing.
So there seems to be a lot of parts. I have questioned the parts price.
Hey mbedford, just saw your thread.
Did you follow through with this. I've also been looking into doing this ( don't have a GT3 yet) for the future.
Surely just getting the seatbelts installed would be cheaper than that quote? and use the boosters belted in.
Even if they weld in an anchor to latch the booster seat on to, you could probably even still use the same carpets?
thanks for any update
Hi ML13,
NO I haven't as I still own the 997 Carrera S Cab.
"
Surely just getting the seatbelts installed would be cheaper than that quote? and use the boosters belted in.
" < Technically you can do this, but I found they refuse to do it because they have said there is not enough support at the child seats back, so if there was an accident, who knows what may happen to the child seats back, and the child's back, i.e. Snap?!? So they insist the seats need to go in to support the back of the child seat.
Either that or they want o charge more for the entire job inc. seats and not just do the seatbelts. But I do see a valid point/reason here. Especially if they are doing a '4 seat' compliance plate/certificate also.
Finally completed this job, rear seats with leather and alcantara centers to match the fronts and belts. Around $21k for a 997.2 for parts and labour. 997.1 a little bit cheaper. PR-Tech in Brookvale did it. LONG time to wait for parts from Porsche Germany, but they did a good job.
This is my GT3, as mentioned and discussed on this thread before. Chrome Temple Motors are managing the sale on my behalf.

GT3 with rear seats "the ultimate car ever".
The dealer is claiming your car is one of 2 delivered with 4 seats as a Factory Option?

Back 3 or 4 years ago when i was researching GT3 rear seats, on europe forums my research led me to find that Porsche in their local German market only, would do very special dealer orders with rear seats, but it wasn’t discussed about. That's why under the carpet all the bits are there ready to bolt onto.
Hey all, I have recently joined the club and as we do I’ve started to think about how to get the baby into the rear of my 997.1 GT3 for those occasional trips. Retrofitting rear seatbelts into a 997.1 seems fairly straight forward but my question is; is it possible to install an infant carrier without the backrest and not lose function of the passenger seat?
Just simply sit the car seat in place and you can see how much room etc. you have. Pending the result, room behind front seat, access etc. you can then decide if you want to install rear belts to fasten it properly.
Or am I missing something?
Agree with
@hugh
- and I'd add that the real test is having the child sit in it while you test, so you can see how far forward you need to put the front seat to fit their knees - that's the limiting factor and shifts as they grow... Get them setup, then test if the front seat is still comfortable.
Thanks gents I’ll post my findings if I head down this path.
@mbedford
15 years ahead of the game with the 992.2 GT3 finally able to be optioned with rear seats!
Didn't we get to the situation where this has been discussed previously that there will be compliance / insurance issues if the no. of seats differs to what the compliance plate shows? IIRC there was some inconsistency in what was shown on compliances plates for GT3s, some had 2 seats, others 4??
I believe there are problems going the other way too, eg removing the 6 & 7th seats of 7 seater SUVs?????
Lol thanks. Chris Harris is always banging on about how GT cars should have a rear seat option. (Now they do) When he came to Sydney last year and I met him, I pointed over at mine and said 'rear seats installed mate' he smiled with approval
😀
