My mate had a gt3 and I loved it but I'll still need the rear seats for the odd school run (2young boys).

I've done just shy of 26,000km since Feb this year and apart from oil and pads, it has run faultlessly.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had about 5 years out if Porsche ownership (funny, my eldest boy is 5!) havering owned lots of 996 gen 911's and quite a few boxsters & cayman's from that era upto 2006. I'm looking to get back into a Porsche, hopefully an 08 ish 997 turbo, circa 30-40k mls, I'm being told these are pretty robust?? Any advice welcome.
(I had originally planned on a gen1 C4s but cylinder score horror stories have put me off)
Have the 08 Gen1 997tt myself, owned 18 months and only added 8000 miles to its 20k when I bough it, no issues at all. There's a recall on this model, usually done during a service (mines due in March so it can wait)
Awesome motor, comfy for all day driving, 1st gear too short IMO, loud pedal is addictive, many people complain about lack of exhaust note, it's true but it really doesn't bother me.
Manuals are pretty rare but are around if you prefer to change gear yourself, mines manual and wouldn't buy auto unless a pdk but still would prefer manual
I'm not a high mileage user so someone may be along to add their higher mileage experience.
Regards
Reassuring then thanks, it's a manual I'm looking for, like you not really a tip fan, haven't tried a pdk. I'll be doing 4-5k a year in it. Not driven one yet, hopefully test driving one Saturday, but have heard they're quiet, quieter then a normal carrera? I do like a bit of noise (had a factory SE on my old C4S and a bonkers loud set of fabspeed Gt pipes on my C4) what are the options on the turbo? Can you still do a bypass or is it new system time?
Truthfully, I have no idea.
There seems to be a few posts around with people's opinions on certain pipes and no doubt 'you tube' may have a few.
I'm also a biker, so if I were to change the exhaust it would be too my make if choice 'Akropovich' but there systems are 7k and i'll never warrant such an expense for a different sound.
Enjoy the test drive, your opinion of the 997tt will be interesting given your previous rides as mine was a 986 3.2 I don't have much to compare it too.
I have a 997 turbo as my daily driver. It's awesome. Mine has an upgraded exhaust and sounds lovely. I've done 5 k miles in last 3 months. As a daily driver it's hard to beat.
Have a 997.1 Turbo manual that has done 21,000 miles.
Had it 2yrs and not missed a beat.
Absolutly fantastic car.
Only downside, just got through a set of rear tyres in less than 6,000 miles.
Must learn to control my right foot.
If you are going for a "manuel" as opposed to tip, insist on a rev history printout to get some idea on the cars history.
This will invariably govern whether the car will be sold with a warranty.......

Is one over rev permitted or have I made that up?
This is the car in looking at tomorrow

range 2 > 7000 and < 7200
range 3 > 7200 and < 7400

Ahem . . . .

There are plenty of nice cars around at recognised marque specialists. . . . .
lovely car you're looking at. its a shame this other car is so expensive as it has lsd, short shift and ceramics which are rare options. Way too expensive compared to rest of market but perhaps vendor is flexible re pricing. Nice spec car though.

The seller did contact me about this car but yes it's out of my price range. Paragon have my perfect car in (GT silver with cocoa, sport classics , carbon buckets etc etc) but that's also £55k and out of my budget

Not really. Get it checked out anyway by OPC or Fearnsport.
Are RPM close? Fearnsport appear to be silverston?

^ This. The later lights/rear bumper seem to be a popular upgrade. The missing badge could be something as simple as the car having been detailed and it not replaced, or a simple de-badge job (or torn off whilst drying/washing the car)
Think I'm starting to get a little paranoid after reading some of the less than glowing feedback about Gc cars.
Tbf I actually think the lights are an improvement visually.
Yes Paragon car is very nice indeed. I'm surprised the car I mentioned is so far out of kilt with rest of the market. It should be circa £50k. One thing I would say is you're far better off paying £50k for the perfect car than £45k for something that may perhaps not be 100% as its easy to blow £8k on quite simple stuff like new clutch, brakes all round and major service inc plugs

Yes - Fearnsport are at Silverstone. Any OPC will do really.
Ok so on the plus side the salesman was pleasent and not at all pushy, on the down side strangely as they new it was a 160ml round trip for me it was the only dirty car on the pitch, not the best start. The car was Irish, registered in Belfast and on Irish plates (not sure how this would effect resale), the rear bumper had almost certainly seen paint, the led lights didn't fit properly and the lacquer was flicking around them, evidence of a smart repair using single pack lacquer in the rear two, all four wheel centers corroded and a 25mm scuff on the front PU. They did say they'd do any paint work I pointed out but all in all not a pristine example. A quick look round some of the other stock saw a mixed bunch of some very nice stuff and some a little on the tatty side.

Hmmmm. I've been toying with the idea of these LED lights for a while.
The centre cps do corrode unfortunately. OPC put this on my MOT as advisory! I replaced mine with gloss black ones - no point in putting the chrome ones on again for the lacquer to lift.
The steering wheel looks worn to me for that mileage.

good shout re steering wheel. I think the fake gen 2 led lights look average. 911 Virgin have one coming in which looks good value.
Can't see anything in their site "coming soon"?

sorry just noticed its an auto.
http://www.911virgin.com/porscheforsale/776/997Tur...
at least it should not have over revs. I've driven a tip and although prefer manual the tip really suits a turbo
Tip does seem popular, thought it ok in my Cayenne but not sure I'd want it in a 911. Surprised no ones offering conversion to paddle shift using pdk wheel and paddles.

If I were in the market today I'd try and see if I could knock the 07 GT silver car I mentioned down a bit. Sellers not going to get £55k for it when Paragon are selling 09 PCM 3 car for same money. If you like the Paragon car trust me find the extra money and buy that one as it looks stunning. You'll be far better off in the long term as that car will come with nothing needed on it.
Might be worth looking out a 09 car if the budget stretches, as you can get gen 1 cars with some gen 2 bits, such as PCM 3, etc. - makes a big difference..
I want to pcp the car so private not really an option, my budget is £45k reall for a car that's only going to do a few thousand a year, if the paragon car was just a few k over I'd stretch but 10k means dipping into funds I'd rather not touch, especially as I'll loose most of the extra when I come out the other end. If I was going to £55k I'd also consider a GTS as I think these will do well residually long term.
Its a tough one at that budget as you're really looking at the cheapest 997 turbos. May also be worth looking at the very best 996 turbos at your budget. There was a lovely 996 Turbos S with minuscule mileage (less than 10k) which sold for circa £40k. with a few thousand miles a year a limited production car like that wouldn't depreciate all that much in my view. Thhis 996 turbo S looked straight out of he factory but there are very good cars available for circa £35k. Its also worth widening your search to gen 2 Carrera S PDK cars - very capable.
The 997 turbo is not an improvement in every department over its predecessor. Whilst its 4wd system has more grip its not as predictable as the 996 Turbos 4wd system which feels RWD most of the time. The steering is not as communicative on the 997 T. Also the VTG turbos run very hot compared to the normal turbos on the 996 Turbo. Looks are subjective but both cars are pretty. The one bug bear on the 996t is the interior but many people prefer the bespoke feel of the 996 interior. Having said all this the 997 turbo does feel more refined. It actually doesn't feel have as quick as it is as its so good at getting its power down without any fuss whatsoever.
I'd considered the above, not ideal being at the bottom end of the price range, I'll need to look at a few more but if yesterday's was representative of 997tt in that price range I might have to re think. I have considered a nice 996tt or Tts but I've had 4 996's and fancied a change, certainly not ruled it out though, especially as I think price wise they've about bottomed. My mate had a gt3 and I loved it but I'll still need the rear seats for the odd school run (2young boys). I'd also thought about a gen2 car but can't help thinking I'll do £15+ over a couple of years.
My local opc are expecting a couple in in px for 991's around Xmas so might be worth a look, gives me time to move my x5 on, snow coming next week folks
I wonder what sort of finance deals Nissan are doing on three year old GTRs. May perhaps be worth a look too. I can understand why you would not want a 996 again if you have already have had one. I'm sure a nice 997 turbo will turn up at an OPC or Indy if you're patient.
My cars similar to the GC car but with double the mileage and its in good condition so there are def nice cars out there of that vintage. Stick to respected Indies like RSJ, Paragon and 911 Virgin and I'm sure you'd get a very good one.

62,000 miles and won't give the car up despite my wife saying I need to get rid of it. Honestly not sure what I could replace it with in terms of a good all rounder. Mine has given up on me a few times though!

This is the crux, what do you replace them with ? Another new one at £140 K don't think so.

I agree not at £150k with a few options absolutely no way. I sat in new one and then got back into mine and to be honest mine did feel agricultural and really basic in comparison. New ones interior as from a much higher class of car. More like you'd expect in a sporty Bentley - very nice indeed - though could not understand why it said Carrera around the PDK gaiter in a turbo!.
Happy with my old banger though. Its fast and comfortable enough for me - at the time people complained the newly released 997 turbo in 2006 was just too fast and too refined for its own good so the new one must be amazing - key thing for me is I enjoy swapping cogs so would struggle to swap up. Now a 993 turbo and 964 turbo. Thats the way to go!

Id love to go for a 993 turbo, just not sure it would be the right way to go for a daily drive (although I only do 4-5k pa) but need the extra rear room of the newer cars. And the roof bar facility oddly enough
