Running on 95RON won't kill the engine but you'll find your fuel consumption increasing and your effective BHP being reduced (some tests say by as much as 100bhp!)

Hi all. Been living with a 2000 model 996 Turbo for about 5 months now. Beautiful car. Have a few questions, seems like the right place to ask. 1. Can I run on non-premium unleaded or will this kill the car? 2. What oil do you guys recommend? 3. Is it worth joining the Porsche Car Owners Club for cheaper insurance and trackdays? Hi Volt44. Lovely choice of car you run :thumb: To answer your questions: 1. I would keep to the grade of fuel that Porsche recommend in the owners manual and I believe that to be anything over and above 98RON. Most of us on here use Tesco 99RON, BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power. Running on 95RON won't kill the engine but you'll find your fuel consumption increasing and your effective BHP being reduced (some tests say by as much as 100bhp!) 2. For modern cars, 0w/40 like Mobil 1 is the preferred choice. For an older car you may wish to use 5w/40 or even 10w/40. 3. Can't comment on that as I believe this produces ambiguous results. Oops, already have! But worth reading around the topic. I know that 911uk, PCGB and TIPEC all have certain benefits for their members. ~ Maxie

Thans for the reply Maxie. Didn't realise 911UK had this sort of thing too. Will investigate for myself. One other thing that bugs me is the car phone. It's a factory fitted handset thing that the passenger ultimately ends up knocking off the cradle. Anyone know if I can adapt the wiring to a mobile car kit or do I need to just isolate the wires and remove the thing? I was an electrician in a previous life so you can suggest a few wire-snipping mods if you know of any.
