Reported cause

There shouldn't be any worries about the increase to 3.6 liters because the increase in displacement is due to a new crankshaft with a longer throw.

I love the pre-'02 models, but I waited until the '02 came out before I replaced my C4.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had the opportunity to see the Porsche display at the Philadelphia Auto show. There for all it's glory were the turbo, cab, coupe, targa and boxster. With the exception of the boxster and it was one very homely group. Those droopy eyed headlights that work on the turbo, make the rest of the line up look like a bunch of ugly sisters. You might be able to take one home, but as a group you can't help but notice that this is one butt ugly group of cars. You'd never guess that daddy and mommy were considered as real lookers, just a year ago. Someone was just dumb enough at Porsche to believe that they just _had_ to give 996 owners a different look from the boxster. Well, they sure did. Let's hope there are better design days ahead. Perry

POST 2Original post

I agree . Those " sad eye " headlights do seem to work better with the big nostril Twin Turbo front . Anyone else think the redesigned lower front grill area looks like, uggh, a Dodge Intrepid ? I like the " smile" of my 996's lower front grill.

POST 3Original post

I agree, the original front end looks great. I just find it frustrating when people ask me how much do I like my Boxster or ask me what type of Boxster my 996 cab is? Oh well ...

POST 4Original post

Just be glad Chris Bangle is not in charge of the 911 styling. Then we would all be crying.

POST 5Original post

Other then the appeal of a 3.6 liter engine over the 3.4 liter i'm less enthused with it's appearance especially the front end and the headlites(looks better on the turbo for some reason). Also the rear spoiler lip is not too noticeable and I like my exhaust tips better then the ones in the 2002 model. Still awaiting what aftermarket companies will do with engine mods because supposedly the crankcase can withstand more loading. Glovebox is a nice touch on the 2002 but why in earth put the digital speedometer on the left side of tach? The c4s is one i would be interested but its wait and see since its a first year model with the 3.6 liter. Seems everyone doesnt like first year model of ne car which my '99 is : (. Regards.

POST 6Original post

996FLT6 The lights on the turbo look different because they are. The Turbo has the chrome surrounding the highlight flat. The MY02 Carrera's is ribbed. I would say the turbo lights are more attractive than the MY02 carrera.

POST 7Original post

996FLT6, There shouldn't be any worries about the increase to 3.6 liters because the increase in displacement is due to a new crankshaft with a longer throw. Said another way, the stroke was increased, not the bore - - generally not a cause for concern. '02 owners immediately benefit from increased torque (at lower RPM) than the 3.4 liter engine delivered. This is good!

POST 8Original post

I second that timrod- having increased displacement plus stronger crankcase will definitely open up to more serious engine mods. I'm just waiting in earnest what aftermarket companies will do for engine mods. Regards. Mike

POST 9Original post

Well, Perry, I have the opportunity to see one in my garage every day and I think the 'droopy' headlights add to the beauty of the front end. I think it's a balanced look. I think the designers call it "a character line." I've always wanted a 996 but wanted to wait until the "Dodge Neon" look of the headlights was changed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Don Watson

POST 10Original post

Although taking a test drive in a 2002 911 is what sold me on the car, I found the coupe to be very beautiful. I am surprised that anyone finds this car to be ugly. I really like it.

POST 11Original post

A lot more than the .2 increase in engine size and headlight have changed for the 2002 Carrera. All around, it is MUCH improved over the '01. The 99-01 996 is a fantastic car, nothing wrong with it at all. Its just that Porsche has improved the car.... Will be picking up my new(to me) 1999 996 C2 coupe soon....Cant wait! John Murray 1983 928S 5 speed silver/black 1991 928GT 5 speed black/gray soon..... 1999 C2 coupe 6 speed silver/black

POST 12Original post

I will quietly concur with the remarkably moderate responses from the other '02 owners (and the generous soon-to-be '99 owner). I love the pre-'02 models, but I waited until the '02 came out before I replaced my C4. '02 Coupe ex-'90 C4 Coupe

POST 13Original post

I think the new headlights on the 02's look much better than the 99-01. The car looks more aggresive to me. I also like new front end compared to the turbo. I don't think the turbo looks bad, but the holes in it's front end look too big to me. It's also nice that neither car looks like a boxter when seen in the rearview mirror anymore. tvg 02 C2

POST 14Original post

I'm adding my concurrence to the thoughts of John Murray and kwk. My '99 C2 cab was my first Porsche and I thought it was a great car. It was a daily driver for my wife and I and never gave us serious trouble over 55k mi. in all types of weather. That said, the '02 is an improvement as one hopes it would be. The ride is firmer, it does have more torque and a lot of the interior appointments, especially the stereo on the Advanced Technics Package, are much better than on the earlier models. And, on the cab, the glass rear window on the covertible top, is really a godsend.

POST 16Original post

I just got my 2002 996 coupe. I waited till it looked different from the 986. I think it looks a little better than the 2001 996. Porsche doesn't just change shapes of their cars for the sake of change. I think it's one of the reason's that the 911 always had great resale value. I think any 911, even before the 964 series still look great today.

POST 17Original post

Not only does it look different from the boxtser I think it is way more agressive looking. Duane (02 C2 Coupe)

POST 18Original post

Hey, R Jay Were did you get those front light covers? Those look great! The ones Ive seen from Techart dont have the hole for the headlight washers. Do you know if those are compatible with Litronic headlamps with washers and aerokit? Carlos from Spain

POST 19Original post

Carlos, The good news is that, yes they are compatible with the Headlight washers and Lits, both of which, if you look closely you might be able to tell I have. The bad news is that I don't have the foggiest idea where they came from as they were part of a special package offering by Brumos Porsche ( www.brumos.com ) and I'm the second owner of the car. I just assumed they were techart. You might try contacting Brumos, perhaps they can tell you. If you find out let me know, might want to install them on another one someday.
