The air/oil separator failed in my
2007 Cayman S
with about 36,000 miles. Enough oil was ingested through the intake that the intake runners had to be cleaned, all spark plugs replaced, all oxygen sensors replaced, MAF sensor replaced, engine air filter replaced,
AOS
replaced, and oil cleaned from the various ares of contamination.
What experience have others here had with the reliability of their motor after this problem has been addressed?
Any new or additional problems after such an episode?
My 02
Boxster
had its first
AOS
failure at just under 80K miles. The final stages had oil dripping from the exhaust -- the engine was smoking heavily as I maneuvered the car to get it positioned for the flat bad -- and at the dealer during some compression test (?!) the engine locked up.
But after the
AOS
was replaced along with the plugs all was well.
The replacement
AOS
, the 2nd
AOS
failed maybe 100K miles later. Heavy smoking upon engine start but recognizing what was wrong I shut off the engine and the flat bed tow truck was called and the car taken to the dealer for its 2nd
AOS
.
This 2nd time I didn't even have the plugs replaced. I drove the car a few days in the area then headed back home 2K miles away. Nothing untoward happened during the trip or since and the replacement
AOS
is closing in on 100K miles.
The car now has 274K miles on it and no harm done as best I can tell from either
AOS
failure.
But as soon as an
AOS
failure is suspected you want to be sure to run the engine as little as possible and ideally not at all until the
AOS
is confirmed and replaced or eliminated and the cause of the symptoms that had you suspecting the
AOS
id'd and addressed.
That is reassuring, thank you.
This is usually a problem for tracked cars, but I think the cheap diaphragm probably wears out and tears on all the 987.1s. pretty cheap to change, but when you see black smoke on start up, shut it down and replace the
AOS
. You should be good for a while. Your have must have been bad for a while to change all of the things you did.....
The A/OS on my
987.2 Cayman
went out at 30K miles. My independent mechanic found the signs (oil on top of the engine, after I mentioned some slight oil dripping). Sill under CPO warranty, so took it into a local dealer, they diagnosed and replaced it. No smoking or drips / oil in strange places since then, and the car's been running fine
.
Has anyone had any correspondence with
Porsche
about this?
My 2006 Base Model just had the
AOS
fail. I purchased the car with 54,000 miles on it and it had just rolled over 70,000 miles. I was driving to church at speeds from 30 to 50 in light traffic and while stopped at a traffic light I noticed my idle was not smooth, but surging (and the idle has always been rock solid). As I pulled away from the light, I began laying a smoke screen that would have changed the outcome of the Battle of Jutland. I happened to be very close to my
Porsche
Dealer (under two miles) so I drove the car directly there. I had no engine light until just before arriving at the dealer. It was the flashing rather than solid indication which is indicative of "major emissions issues" and there was no text display like "... time to take your car to the workshop". Well, duh, I was visibly aware of my carbon footprint being on steroids. The dealer was not open yet and I parked just outside their gate. I waited and eventually a staff member opened the gate so I could move the car to the service area. The car restarted immediately (it had been sitting for over an hour) and I drove in, accelerated to 15 and shut the engine down and coasted to the service area. When I restarted, I noticed that my oil level reading was at one bar flashing. So the short drive from smoke inception to the dealer consumed close to a quart of oil. I would suggest that a greater danger of driving with the
AOS
failed might be oil exhaustion and serious consequences. Yes, Boxsters hold over eight quarts, but at a pint per mile, that won't last long. I used to drive Triumph Spitfires and I called them "pub wenches" because every one of them "always wanted a pint". I'd say that the "Blue Lady" just showed what a German Girl can do during October Fest ! My car is under CPO and is in the shop at this moment getting a new
AOS
and getting "cleaned up".
I'll report back in six months or so or if I notice any after effects.
Glad to hear yours is under CPO.
And follow up is always good for the community so TIA.
