Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Test .htm' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Test .htm' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Serious question in advance of snow.
Daily driver is a Merc E class 320 CDI Auto on 18" AMG alloys 265/35s and weekend/sunny day car is a 996 C4S Cab Manual on Turbo 2 18" 295/35s
I was thinking if and when it snows again this year which car would be better to get around in ?
The 4 wheel drive 996 man as it 4 wheel drive(unsure of the split F-R) so should give better traction/grip ? also manual so more controllable through the gears but has i would have thought too much power, wheels to wide.
or the heavier E class with slightly narrower tyres, less power but selectable Auto and 2 wheel drive
Anybody have any experience, does the 4 wheel drive help in this instance of Snow or is the power just a hinderance
The tyres are way too wide (especillay as you have Turbo wheels).
The fact is I would rather walk than risk my Pork.
It's the other berks you have to think about.
I use my 2003 carrera 4 manual all year round and it is great in snow. Much better than my previous BMW. Similar to my old sub wrx. Wider rear tyres offset by better traction with weight on back. Will fit winter tyres on this year as last year some narrow steep ungritted roads bit slippery. 996 has only 5% power to front increasing up to 40% if slip detected. Only problem with using it all winter is salt. Have to wash underbody regularly and found that exhaust still seems more corroded. That and the fact on surface rust on discs
Can't answer your question directly, but IME 2wd 993 on 265 section rears has MUCH more 'grip' in ice/light-snow over BMW with 205 section rear tyres.
Why? Because the engine/weight is over the driven wheels.
Deeper snow you need at least an LSD and better still a proper AWD system... but MUCH more important than
either
is ground clearance
But as GT4 says, it's the OTHER drivers who will cause the REAL problems - IMO buy some winter tyres for the Merc.. (look in the driver's manual for the correct sizes.) :thumb:
Why? Because you'll be able to STOP - doesn't matter which or how many of your wheels are 'driven' when you are braking to avoid someone else.
Winter tyres it is then, but what makes them winter tyres?
Would I buy another set of alloys or steel wheels then fit with "winter tyres" I presume they are a lot thiner than The 265's I have on now?
When would you fit them ? I now winter ..... But I am just trying to understand how they would work in principle
There's lots of info on this, but the KEY principle is that 'winter' tyres perform better than 'summer' tyres once you drop below 7 degrees centigrade.
Think about that - that's a very large period of time in the UK.
If you commute (early morning, dark evenings) it's a very very long period of time.
There doesn't have to be ANY snow or ice, just cool and wet, and you'll stop quicker.
Not opinion; fact!

Nokian and Vredestein are well-known (in Europe) in this field, but Michelin Conti Pirelli etc etc all make them too.
This is an excellent website for everything rubber

and here is a latest winter-tyre test

Good luck :thumb:
My 4S ran like a dream during the earlier snow problems this year, and I passed a couple of abandoned 2's and 2S's on the road.
Running standard Mich's - I just drove slow, maintained traction and it was fine - even up and down hills.
I think I would consider winter tyres now though, the benefits are huge
Ok I am warming to winter tyres now.
But I can't seem to find info on what size tyres etc.
Example: I have 265/35/18s on amg alloys on my e320cdi merc
So if I am looking for a spare set of wheels/ alloys would you go for 16" wheels with a thinner tyre and deeper side wall to make the size the same so the MPH is correct or buy 18s as the spares with the same size wide tyres ?
Which would be best as I am sure I can pick up a cheap set of wheels on eBay ?
What's the point of being on a forum if you have to RTFM.... :floor:
Good point, I will go and wipe the dust from the leather folder and look... :worship:
