So I contacted Nick of NM Automotive - who as mentioned before was super helpful - and I replaced my JoyeAuto unit with their one (which is indeed made by Unichip).

Suggestion
Since the problem happens when the engine isn't running I'd say it's unlikely to be interference that a filter would cure and having removed and re-installed everything I can only assume it's something I'll have to live with.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A few months ago when I bought the 987 Spyder I looked into getting a CarPlay mod for the PCM3.0.
Unfortunately only available for PCM3.1.
Seems they’re now available for PCM3.0.
£499 inc vat for the Navinc system.
Anyone tried it yet?

I wanted to keep the original head unit with Bose system in my 987.1. I had a Dension Gateway 500 fitted by a mobile guy in Surrey at my house.
This links to your phone by either cable, (To charge as well) or Bluetooth to your existing system. Hands-free phone and music please effortlessly through the existing system and keep the whole lot looking standard.

This keeps everything standard too - but you get the benefits of CarPlay.

Surely its a different screen and not the standard head unit?
No, retains original head unit and screen.

I think Cartronics in Surrey are a Navinc supplier and can fit:
https://www.cartronics.co.uk/apple-carplay
Will check with them tomorrow.
Thank you. What did they say as I approached them earlier in the year and their PCM 3 CarPlay offering at the time was, to quote
"We can add Carplay to the factory head unit, it would work via AUX and touch screen.
Cost is £1450 fitted"
I installed the system on PCM 3.1 myself about a year ago. It was relatively easy and I assume the 3.0 would be similar. I bought the system off Alibaba for around $300. It is the same kit that they resell in the UK with installation and is supported by a team in Hong Kong.
On PCM 3.1 you can switch between porche nav and carplay by pressing the NAV button. No loss of function and when you put the car in reverse when using carplay the porsche camera comes on without having to press anything. i.e. the same as a standard car. The added benefit is that it is wireless as well. I have a 2013 Cayenne GTS and with this upgrade I have decided to keep the car.

A place in Watford sell it for £500 inc vat. Not sure on fitting price, but assume £120ish.

I don’t think it really matters where a supplier is based for a piece of kit from the Netherlands! They’re one of the few U.K. retailers.
As Hobo said though, he sourced kit from China, so there’s that option too.
Good to see it’s finally available for PCM3.0 because it wasn’t when I checked in February.

Joyeauto Wireless Apple Carplay For Porsche Cayenne Macan Cayman Panamera Boxster 718 911 PCM3.1 Android Auto Car Play Adapter
You can buy direct from them but it worked out more expensive. Joyeauto have a load of videos that you can follow which make it easy for someone that has built their own PC (for example).
Please note, this is for PCM3.1 and not 3.0 as in the OP.
Looks like the Joyeauto setup for PCM 3.0 (987.2 / 997.2) enabling Apple CarPlay Wireless / Android Auto is now available. Came across this video of the install process - seems much the same as for the PCM 3.1 version, so taking the unit apart, fitting another PCB, connecting it up, powering the external box and hiding away the cables, etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfbNTo6YsN4
No idea if / when Porsche will release a CarPlay unit like they did for the 'Porsche Classic PCM' but this looks a pretty compelling for around $500.
Guys, thanks for the info on here, I've just ordered one of these for my '09 997GT2, the lack of DAB radio stations and Apple car play have been the only negative thing whilst DDing
Had the JoyAuto PCM 3.0 unit installed on my 2009 997GT2, doesn't work..... my installer is doing a report to send to PayPal so I can get a refund. A waste of a few hundred in installation/deinstallation costs

ah but did you buy it direct or via
https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/
the latter is the way to go. UK support and NMautomotive amend the UI to look more factory than the standard JoyAuto PCM3
Don't be confused that it is not on their site, it is available from them, just out of Beta testing.... and an example of their support on the recent PCM3.0, and people saying how supportive they are @
http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=142510&po...
If the former, direct from JoyAuto, then get a refund from JoyAuto and buy it again from NMautomotive (and Sextons is their approved installer, though they have others too) and you'll have super support on the installation and a more factory looking user interface.
Their fact sheet
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bGTQdunBV4JT5tWLl...
plus a video from Nick who is hands on with support
https://vimeo.com/478169707
https://vimeo.com/user75450753
Never buy the JoyeAuto direct as you will have very little if any support. NMAutomotive are a bit more expensive but surely having someone on hand to help is worth the extra £50 or so.
that said, considering the unit is £450 (with shipping) plus (i have been quoted) £500 to install it, that is a grand -vs- waiting until next year for the official Porsche one to come out....
https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/por...
'....the expanded rollout of digital infotainment technology to fit older models as recent as the 997, with that variant's PCCM system due for launch in 2022 in response to demand.'
The recent 996 PCM unit is £1300...and lets say the 997/987 one next year will be £1500, I'd rather pay that to get a high res screen and better touch control than this temporary measure. And the one next year will be an easier install, it is bound to be.
I am going to wait it out!
I got one of the kits from Joyeauto for my 987.2, fitted it myself and fortunately mine does actually work so far.
First negative is that the screen when in Carplay mode flickers a bit from time to time - jumping up a pixel or so - which I don't notice when driving. To echo the "no support from Joyeauto" comment they just told me to get a voltage filter and basically weren't interested in investigating. Since the problem happens when the engine isn't running I'd say it's unlikely to be interference that a filter would cure and having removed and re-installed everything I can only assume it's something I'll have to live with.
The second issue is the screen itself isn't particularly good for things like swiping - but that's because it wasn't really designed to back in the day so you can use the right knob instead.
The third is that the next and previous buttons have the exact opposite effect when you press them (tapping on screen works correctly of course). A rookie software bug I'd say but doesn't inspire confidence.
In summary: it does the job and means I can use Google maps while driving, which is the main thing I was after. But if Porsche release an updated PCM with Carplay and a much better screen then I'd remove the kit and upgrade to that in a heartbeat. If you're less patient than me, I'd wait.
Yep I'd wait, or get the JoyeAuto via NMAutomotive as they give full support. Buying from JoyeAuto direct is doomed if you need to ask even the simplest of questions let alone a fault.
Also worth noting the first PCM 3.0 batches from JoyeAuto had an issue where they drain the battery. A software patch by NMAutomotive (whom I have no affiliation with I should add) solved that.

In the balance, I would not hesitate to purchase another unit and install it myself. I paid about $400 all in. I’d be a little less eager if it was £1k as others have said inc install.
Yours must be the 3.1 solution which is more tried and tested than the 3.0 solution. Good to hear a positive review on their support though. I still think its worth waiting now until for next year for the new range of Classic Car Radio support. Only doubt I have is how they'll cover off Gen 1 and Gen 2's, they might just do a release to update Gen 1's, the silver units, as they are further behind the tech times. unless the unit is the same size between the 2 Gens and maybe it'll be a facia option.

NMAutomotive use the Unichip kits. Not joyeauto. But support from Nick is great. Worth the premium IMO.

Don’t all roads lead back to Joyeauto? Unichip use the Joyauto? Either way, yep, get it from Nick!
I'll wait and have a look at Porsche's new 997 offering although I quite like the PCM 3 on the GT2 as it differentiates it as a 2009 production model.
I've asked my installer if he can come up with a solution so I can bluetooth DAB radio off my phone onto the speakers, it is only DAB which is missing for me as I have my iphone mounted in view and can use Waze etc easily enough.....

Edited to not mine is PCM3.1 as pointed out below
My experience with support was very different, but that might be due to the increased demand and JoyAuto not scaling. When I had a question they very quickly responded to me. I was surprised because I thought they would be difficult to contact particularly because I bought it through AliExpress or another similar site.
Again, this was a while ago so their ability to support the volume of sales may be sufficient.
In terms of swiping, I have never thought about swiping. I always use the knobs. But, I can imagine the user experience with swiping being terrible as I don’t think the PCM is made for swiping. I’m glad I continued to interact with the PCM in the same manner I had done for years and can see how annoying it would be if swiping was an expectation.
The screen resolution has been very consistent to me. From the moment I installed it I was impressed at how…normal it looked. I was even annoyed that Porsche didn’t make more of an effort. Some have said earlier that it’s because of the compute power demands, and that makes sense. The PCM in my car is from 2013. The car play is 5-6 years newer.
On the balance, I would not hesitate to purchase another unit and install it myself. I paid about $400 all in. I’d be a little less eager if it was £1k as others have said inc install.

In light of that, you could get this

and then the Bovee, though its going to get pricey.
or these folk might have a solution

So I contacted Nick of NM Automotive - who as mentioned before was super helpful - and I replaced my JoyeAuto unit with their one (which is indeed made by Unichip). It's definitely not the same hardware as JoyeAuto as the board in the PCM is completely different and the external wiring is somewhat simpler (it's powered from the PCM rather than finding a spare fuse slot which means by the time you start the car it's already initialised). It made fitting into the car quite a bit easier.
Overall feels like a much more polished product (especially the user interface), less like an add-on and more like it's directly integrated into the PCM and the display flickering I experienced with the JoyeAuto unit does not happen with the NMA one. The installation instructions are orders of magnitude better, as is the support. I'm much happier with this unit and would definitely recommend it - if nothing else than to have excellent support should you need it.
