I noticed a bit of a noise when turning after a track session, so checked my power steering fluid level (had to borrow a T30 Torx driver, couldn't they put this in the tool kit?)
The dip stick had MIN and MAX markings, but nothing about hot versus cold. I also wasn't sure whether to just seat the cap, or screw it down to obtain the right reading (it makes a difference). This is on a 2011
Cayman S
, does anyone have the proper procedure?
thanks!
Common sense tells you it should be at least at the MIN when cold and not over the MAX when hot.
At least the 987.1s have a small issue with the PS pump being generally overdriven, given the size of the stock crankshaft pulley. At the track - w/ hi revs, temps and cornering loads - this is magnified. Fluid is driven from the system and your fluid level drops.
Problem is the reservoir on the pump is small - run too long w/ too little fluid and its easy to damage the pump.
If it cools, you top up fluid and the groan goes away, then you're good. Consider an under drive pulley.
If it gets to the point in which topping up doesn't cure anything then you're looking at a pump replacement. It's a ~ $450 part at pelicanparts and a shop will (correctly!) charge 8 - 10 hours of labor. It's a bugger, living underneath the left intake runners and A/C compressor. And getting to any one item requires the others to be already gone ... Nearly, anyway. And you might as well do the under drive pulley while you're in there.
I did it when I had more time than money; getting ready to do the front struts in the same spirit.
mmmv,
-PM.
Still hoping for an answer - does anyone have access to the dealer maintenance guidelines for a 2011 CS?

I don't have the official
Porsche
answer but I used the Min when cold and Max when hot, as stated above. (I also have a 2011 CS).
i've topped my fluid (2010
Boxster S
) on cold and i can tell you that the difference between Min and Max is very little.
I confirmed with my dealer that the level should be above "min" when cold and below "Max" when hot. I filled the level to max while hot, and rechecked when cold - the level was just over half. So if you're filling when cold, don't fill much over half way.
