Re: CEL and backpressure issue w tiptronic S
Dear All,
My CEL recently came up on my 2008 Cayman S tiptronic and in the midst of rushing things, I used the Durametric cable that came with my Softronic flash to clear the error codes. All I could recall was the error code has some kinda "RKAT" and "Bank 1" and "Bank 2" commands in them. I also recently changed to a SRP kit with the Softronic flash as well as an oil catch tank.
Also, I had my headers changed to aftermarket ones with sports cats. Apparently the sports cats aren't the best ones out there and I am giving them around 6 months more before having them replaced. My few questions are :
1) What could be the fault with the CEL?
2) Bearing in mind my ride's with a tiptronic S transmission, would removing the cats from the headers result in a loss of backpressure which I heard is crucial to prevent torque loss like in any auto/tip tranny?
3) Also how loud will it be without cats(only my headers are custom, rest of exhaust is stock) and will it screw up my Softronic flash programming?
4) Could the cats disintegrating result in my CEL fault code.
Thank you in advance. Any individual thoughts/expertise is very much appreciated.
p.s. I just realize that this may not be the best thread to put the above altho I recently did these mods. Hope admin could help direct this topic to the right thread if necessary.
Re: CEL and backpressure issue w tiptronic S
1. Just about anything - it's very hard to speculate without the specific code numbers.
2. I could be wrong, but I don't think the presence or absence of back-pressure in the exhaust system would have any bearing on performance, with regards to what kind of transmission you have.
3. Some members have reported slightly louder exhausts with catless headers (and stock exhaust/secondary cats). I believe that Softronic is (or can be) programmed to prevent a CEL in the absence of the upstream cats.
4. Most definitely - I have had OEM cats go bad twice, and in both cases they threw CELs. Most recently I just had a partially obstructed cat on one side that would only throw a CEL under high flow (e.g. high RPMs) on the track. It was causing enough back-pressure under those circumstances to cause misfire and exhaust code CELs.
Re: CEL and backpressure issue w tiptronic S
As it turned out, it was the oil catch tank connecting hose that had a leak. Didn't expect such a small hose to cause such a big thing (CEL, increased FC and drop in power).
Thanks for your input KS!

Glad you figured out what it was . . .
Re: CEL and backpressure issue w tiptronic S
What happened to this?
I have a very similar problem that only started after I filled up at a cheaper gas station last night.
Today I have the CEL with vibration and what can only be described a low noise level (base) spluttering
