Very few indeed I suspect will end up paying the extra for a 4.0 over a 2.5 despite the acres and acres of hot air posted about it on forums.

All car values seem strong at the moment, I suspect that is unlikely to change anytime soon given all the money that’s been pumped into the economy recently along with a limited supply of cars...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is it the worst possible time to buy a used car? Yup.
Am I paying way over the odds? Certainly.
Will I be b
hing about depreciation next year? Inevitably
Should I have paid a bit more for a new 4.0l variant? Hell yes.
But today, I am ecstatic and cannot wait!
Counting the days.....
Thanks to all for the advice over the last few months.
Great car. The 2.5lt engine is actually very good. Enjoy it and don’t give a toss about what anyone else says.
Best colour too. I’ve just ordered mine in that colour
Fantastic - bloody great car, disconnect the soundaktor and it'll be like driving a different car.
Enjoy every moment, can't take the ££ with us can we.
I think you are pushing 80k for the same car new. 6-9 months for delivery as well. Didn't want to wait any longer after the last year. Who knows what time any of us really have. A friend recently had a stroke aged 50. I mean 50 ffs.
It's probably the most financially reckless thing I have done in 20 years! But by god it is thrilling....
I love the colour in particular.
Yes. The colour is fantastic.
And the wheels. And the interior.
And when I commented I didn’t realise it was a GTS. All the other Porsche GTS models I’ve heard sound great. So hope that one does too.
Do start a thread when it comes! (Or continue this one…)
Lovely looking car in a fabulous spec. My wife’s Boxster is the base model....engine has got plenty about it so imagine the GTS is very lively ! Congrats on making the correct decision of buying a car to enjoy and not worrying about the numbers !!!
I was admiring that car on the site last week. Terrific looking. Love the turbo alloys.
I drove a 2.5gts at pec. I thought it was terrific . Everybit as quick as my 981 spyder.
As said on here , spend some money if you have grafted.
My dad passed last month and as he did not spend or get the joy of gifting , we are giving his money to the tax man now....
Looks gorgeous. After all this lockdown the freedom to get out and just drive will be great. The good times you will have will make you forget about the numbers in five minutes !

I do know, I think, how you feel. Lost my mum years ago - puts everything in perspective - a searing clarity about what matters.
Brilliant car, congratulations.
I just sold my Gentian Blue Boxster and found it was a bit of a chameleon as the light changes going from a dull blue in grey and cloudy skies to almost a vibrant purple in bright sunlight. The only word of caution is be careful when cleaning it as I found mine marked a bit more easily than our other cars.
Enjoy

I wasn't sure at first about the colour. But googling it showed it as a really bright blue in the sun. It reminds me of carbon black on my old E46 M3. It was blue or black depending on the light.
That colour is starting to get boring. In time the used market will be saturated with that colour and will command a lower price as a result. But hey, enjoy it here and now.

Totally agree - especially with the circumstances which lead to the purchase. Maybe JulianR didn't read the whole thread. Oh well, it is the internets I guess. OP enjoy it, and ignore the odd numpty.

Lovely car OP
I too like your approach, not dissimilar to mine! Buy the car you want, at nearly 50 (sounds like you are in the same range as me), I though if I don't do it now, when will I, and jeez, I've worked hard enough to get to a place (with a bit of finance help!) I can.
Enjoy it

It is lovely, but everyone across many threads seem to be opting for that colour and in time (once it’s new model upgrade time) there will be a gluttony of this colour on the used market. It’s lovely, but starting to get boring.

Maybe. Maybe not.
This is likely the best driving car I will ever own. Every day that I drive it will enrich my life. I won't be spending a single moment worrying about how a different colour might have yielded a better residual value. I am not blaze about money but have knocked my pan in for 15 years running my own business. Holidays have been cancelled, nights out sacrificed and huge amounts of personal stress endured. I am getting what I really want and if that costs me an extra £5 - £10k, in light of the last year, I could not give a toss.
I will simply be the guy driving what I think is a great car with a huge smile on my face.

Great attitude, sometimes money is not the most important aspect. Enjoy your car.
Oh f
k off Julian.
Great car OP and I hope you have many smiles with it, Gentian Blue is a superb colour, looks really classy and special. Just to echo what was posted above I think it's a colour that has a white undercoat so chips and marks can be more visible so if you are worried some protection for the paint wouldn't be a bad shout!
Very much enjoy!
Thanks for all the positive comments. Ultimately, I love the car. Really cannot wait. Good shout on the paint protection.
Will post pictures. They are trying for a Friday delivery. Porsche Exeter have been great to deal with (albeit they have the easiest job in the world selling these cars as I observed to the sales chap....).
Stunning car and top colour enjoy every minute with it and ignore the laptop design aficionado's. Staggers me the 'come resell time' doomsayers. Hardly shows a live in the moment lust for life. Enjoy the car pal.

Before I bought my GT4 I was worried about depreciation, specs, colour of thread blah blah. Now I have it it is bloody great and I smile every time I get in it and could not give a monkeys about any of pre-purchase questions. I just want tio jump in and drive it and not worry about business , which it dioes so that covers all the costs for me
Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine

Car prices are nuts at the moment. As to the future, who knows. It certainly feels like there is a wall of cash out there getting spent on motors and home improvements. I plan to keep the car for 4-5 years, so I'm pretty relaxed about it all... (colour concerns apart, obvs
)
You're right they are bonkers. I bought a 5 year Macan S from an OPC in January...... I've seen non OPC prices now for similar at £1000 more than I paid, slightly nuts!

I think they were a £2k option and in fairness, the black wheels look great anyway - especially against a lighter colour.

2.30pm
Visceral, engaging, beguiling, sensational, poised, unflappable, ineffable, sonorous (yes even with a 4 cyclinder turbo)... OMFG!
WHY HAVE I WASTED THE LAST DECADE DRIVING SOMETHING ELSE? WHO KNEW?
It is apparently no longer required to slow down for roundabouts....
As a 48 year old man, all I can say is:-
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
That car is my rage against the dying of the light.

What?? You tease us for days, then nothing. Dropping us like a one night stand!

(Of the car, not the one night stand! )
Apologies - spent the weekend driving. Just sensational. The electric steering is reassuringly heavy and communicative. The turbo engine is just brilliant - torque in every gear and largely well distributed over the rev range. No real lag other than in auto mode which is ok if driven gently. It's actually pretty civilized when driven like that.
It's a complete weapon of a car.
And the grip. Try as I might - applying increasing savagery in throttle response and turn in - I cannot get the back end out. It is utterly stable. I think the traction control needs to be switched off.
In summary: what a car. I delayed a decade in buying one. I think the reality is that there are no disappointing Porsches. They are simply terrific and relatively affordable driving cars. If you want one and can afford it, don't do what I did and delay. Just buy it.

Great looking motor. I have to admit I really think these 2.5’s are an absolute steal. I really enjoy the fact the “purists” have the 4.0 option to
shut them up
test their loyalty. Very few indeed I suspect will end up paying the extra for a 4.0 over a 2.5 despite the acres and acres of hot air posted about it on forums.
I traded my previous 2.7 F6 for a 2.0 Boxster back in ‘18. Best thing I ever did, the torque is so much better than the old underpowered 981 2.7 and the whole thing is just so much more up to date, a much better all round package. Superb cars.

I don't really know enough about Porsche engines in general to pass comment. I have little doubt that the 4.0l will be stunning but with a slightly different character to the turbo. I just love the power and the torque of the turbo. It suits the sort of driving that I do. I can remember to get a turn out of the M3 you needed to hit 6000 rpm, so it really tended to sing on long, relatively straight, roads. I suspect the 4.0l will be amazing on some race tracks. Maybe a wee bit less usable day to day but I bet it sounds amazing at high revs.
I do know that the 2.5l has been pretty denigrated. I can only say that I find that confusing based on my driving experience of the car.
Great looking car there OP. Love those wheels, really suit the car / colour combo and refreshing not to see Black wheels (can't abide them personally).
Enjoy it. If I was in a position to buy an F4 718 Cayman or Boxster, I wouldn't hesitate. A very brief drive in the base 2.0F4 in late 2019 convinced me that I could live with the much maligned powerplant just fine thanks very much!!
Don't get me wrong, I used to love my old 2.7F6 986 but the low down grunt and sweet revving nature of the 718 was so impressive and the handling so pure I was having that much fun that I never found myself cringing at the sound....and that was with the top down.
I imagine the 2.5 version is way more car than most of us would ever need if one was not taking it to the track
Every day the car yields new delights.
The 18 way seats are the most comfortable I have ever experienced.
The car's ability to change direction is astounding. It simply cannot be fooled or confused.
The ride quality in drive is really good.
I really feel that I have purchased automotive perfection.
Best car I have ever owned.
Glad to hear you like the car OP. That's the thing with Porsche - they make some of the best sports cars out there, but are also class leading in comfort, build quality and perceived quality. They represent good value vs the competition, aren't ruinous to run and hold their money better than most other cars.
On the 718 specifically, if the flat six didn't exist there wouldn't be a bad word said against it. The flat four sounds pretty good and is pretty flawless as far as that type of engine goes. It loves to rev and is genuinely exciting. The 718 brought massive improvements over the 981 in other areas.
A stunning car Ant-congratulations on your purchase.
I too have recently pulled the trigger on a 2006 987 gen 1 Cayman (OPC are giving it a major and some TLC that has been overdue next week) but there is a full Porsche history and am simply thrilled by the fact a smile unconsciously appears on my face whenever I drive her. Following some hesitancy in electing a shoddy 996 (as budget permitted) and deciding upon the Cayman I have no regrets. Entirely different cars but I do agree on the 'there's no bad Porsche'. My first post on here but there has been a lot of interesting reading and sound advice in the related posts.
Cheers!

It loves to rev and is genuinely exciting. The 718 brought massive improvements over the 981 in other areas.
I had long been a bit challenged by the prices charged by Porsche, but what is the competition? Pretty limited in reality and such cars are often more expensive and reputed to be less engaging. I have actually come to see the prices charged as representing value for money. The longer I have the car, the more I appreciate its talents. I like the fact that they are relatively understated and don't "shout" too much. I love the engine. It's something that has not bothered me one jot. I think it sounds great and the power delivery for everyday driving is immensely satisfying. Not once have I thought: hang on, this is just a four cylinder. I really wonder how many people who criticise the car have actually driven one.
I feel like a walking advertorial for the brand and the car!

Cheers!
