Ok soI am no expert. In my opinion and from my research it seems the rarest future boxster/cayman will be the first boxster spider with approximately 1900 produced?

No. The lowest is the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 SPORTS CUP EDITION with only 88 produced.
Then the 987.2 Black Edition 500 produced
Then the 700 987.1 Cayman S Sports
Then the 777 987.1 Cayman Design Edition
In between all that, though I don't believe lower that the 88 Sports Cup, are limited Boxster runs...like the
500 Limited Edition Boxster and Boxster S: Orange Editions
2012 Porsche Boxster S Black Edition where 987 were made.
the 500 run of the 2008 PORSCHE BOXSTER S 6-SPEED DESIGN EDITION
If you include the non-official 987 Porsche Cayman S "Bumble Bee" Edition of which there was only one, then that would be it, but officially the 88 GT4 Sports Cup road cars are the rarest.
How lame is your research?! Blimey, what did you spend, 2 mins?
Edited by julian987R on Monday 31st May 00:13
Rare doesn't always equal collectible, pointed many a time that a manual 987.2BE is basically a CR with PASM but £10k cheaper and much rarer.
But I have always maintained that the 987.2Spyder is the cream of the crop of caysters
Rather depends which market you are talking about location wise. Wordwide numbers or for each country.
981 Spyder and 718 Spyder rare in the UK with only c 223 981 and prob even fewer 718 at production end. Probably fewer numbers for the GT4 PDK. 718 Spyder PDK will be extremely rare.

IMO rarest does not equal most collectible. There have been a range of "special editions" that were not at all special to drive compared to the standard models. Go and do test drives to see what floats your boat and what you consider a special driving experience. The 987 Spyder is a great and very special car IMO

OP light-heartedly posed the question at 23:24 last night.
Maybe one of two things happened here.
1 - He may have been outside all day in the sunshine instead of posting arsey comments to people on forums
2 - He potentially didn't realise there was a chess-style max response time to forum posts.
2 - Maybe you jumping down his throat less than an hour after posting made him think there are too many b3ll 3nds on PH to bother entertaining the conversation further.
Of course, I'll gladly add the usual disclaimer that these comments reflect my own person opinion. But if forums were a bit more welcoming then maybe people would be a bit more engaging
The 718 GT4 Sports Cup Edition is just a bit of paint, stickers, and stitching etc. Not sure they'll be setting the auctions on fire in decades to come.

The OP asked a polite, innocent question. Doesn't deserve the kn0b-esque response he got.
And OP, no need to justify your whereabouts today.

...but that is not the criteria, for something to be an official rare by Porsche doesn't have to be anything more or less . The question is what are rare editions, and the 718 GT4 Sports Cup Edition, regardless of your POV, it is the rarest edition of all Caymans.

Because it only takes a good search on 'What is the rarest Porsche Cayman edition' and results 3 and 4 give the answers. I find it frustrating just how many people post questions that a Google search will answer and then they just disengage with the thread they started. Learn how to search. I am a mild mannered guy, but folk like this just do my head in.

In the nicest possible way, the above is your problem, not the OP’s.
A lot of other people (at least myself) may be happy to see another thread with something that may have been said somewhere else. Or at least it may not bother some of us too much.
It’d be cool if these forums could continue to be a friendly place with no stop watch on when it’s considered people must respond.
Furthermore sometimes a new thread can spark new discussion rather than someone simply searching.
We are mainly car enthusiasts here after all.

Julian - in the last few days you told a guy who'd just bought a car in Gentian Blue that it was a boring colour. You told someone else he was fabricating an entire OPC to pursue some personal agenda. You told a guy with a gorgeous new Spyder that his red dials are somehow wrong. A guy who posted a picture of a car wash got a telling off for using it. You completely misread an ironic post about a GT2RS and the accompanying watch, being unable to see that a reference to the thick-wristedness of the OP was a hint (and not a subtle one) that anyone who considered such a purchase was a w
ker and followed it up with some self-righteous nonsense aimed at the OP.
I'm not stalking you; you're all over these threads and very little of what you post is helpful, well-considered or insightful.
I can forgive you the obsession with your own 987R, but this constant pi55ing on other folks' chips is troll-like behaviour and not in any way 'mild mannered.'
BTW have you taken your R above 3000 rpm yet?

Fair enough.
Would be a tiny bit of a pity to see the Cayster go down the 911's path and become and something of an overpriced collector trinket.
Most of them (Caysters) are incredible value as a consequence of not really being of interest to collectors.
But to answer the question, well, the 987.2 models were built in the smallest numbers. Something like a 987.2 Cayman S quite possibly rarer than a 981 GT4. On the other hand, none of the 987.2 cars are mechanically terribly distinct. The Spyder and R are only very slightly tweaked regarding the mechanicals. The 718 GT4 and Spyder stand out with the 4.0 engine, GT3 front axle etc. So you could make a decent argument for one of those models, I think they'll end up more valuable than the 981 GT4 / Spyder.
But when all said and done personally think the 987 Spyder will end up being regarded as the most special Cayster (assuming nothing appears in future to trump it). Can't be justified objectively, it's not really that much better than a basic 987 Boxster to drive. But there's a certain purity to it that the market may eventually reward. The market loves perceived purity.
Or combustion cars will be borderline banned and the whole question will be moot!

We may find Caysters go the way of this ...
https://www.everrati.com/
and 986/987 donor cars are highly valuable and rare for such an outcome.

Back to the OPs question(s).
The 'rarest' and 'most collectable' aren't always the same.
As others have pointed out there are a number of limited edtion cars built in low numbers but most of these are 'marketing trim' specs and of no real extra value over a good standard car.
The most collectable Boxster/Cayman will come from the unique models. Then by picking a car which has the right:
1) Options (everyone has their own view on this)
2) Colour (I'd pick the launch or a unique colour)
3) Low mileage
Picking the above will narrow the already small number to a few cars. I'd suggest either:
987.2 Spyder
Manual
White
Buckets in black alcantara
PSE
Spyder wheels
Ceramic brakes
Air con (subjective on Spyder)
Radio (radio delete was an option for lightness)
or
987.2 Cayman R
Manual
Peridot Green (launch colour)
Buckets in black alcantara
PSE
Cayman R wheels (as per Spyder)
Air con
Ceramic brakes
The above is my view so others may have a different suggestion.
Finding one at the right price is another question.

Clearly related
So
Does anyone have the breakdown in numbers for manual Cayman R & manual first generation Spyders as to how many of each were made and also how many in each colour?
I think the Spyder was only sold in red, black, silver and white, is that correct?
Also any opinions on whether I would be better off selling my Audi R8 GT (333 made) and buying a Cayman R & Spyder (I know I’d have to add funds).
I’m off for a 30 minute run now and then a 2 hour cycle at 1pm so will not be immediately available to respond...

Here’s a non AT/PH listed one for you R wise. I have no affiliation with the seller, but going by the spec and description, vs those currently available it seems like a good one well worth considering

I think it’s a great colour the launch Peridot green. The R looks good in all. I think White looks the best, and then the skittles colours of Red orange yellow and green. But there is no wrong colour.

Not having any experience with the R8 GT I'd expect it to be quite a different experience performance wise given additional power over R/Spyder. You buy the latter for their fantastic handling but not for outright speed. The Spyder roof is a bit of an acquired taste - something to make sure you can live with. I'd have a manual with buckets and PCCB any day of the week if I had space in my garage

Would be useful to know what you want the Cayman R to do that the Audi R8 GT doesn't (low depreciation, investment or to drive)?
And what other cars do you have?
I have an A35 AMG that is due to go back in Sept, I will get an EV replacement because of the tax position, possibly an Audi Etron GT.
I’m looking at what loses the least relatively and possibly increases and taking a ten year view.
I’m open to keeping the R8 and getting something else to go with it.
10 year view would need a crystal ball with the onset of EV's which could change demand for classics.
Personally I'd be looking at an older classic if you're looking for a sure fire investment over 10 years.
Of these I'd say the 987.2 Spyder has greater potential.
