Suggestion
You can tell if this process has started in a wide variety of cases by having the engine oil checked for pieces of bearing - but this does not mean it will not go if there is nothing there as they can go at any time, and any issues with the seal must be properly investigated.
Leading evidence: 'Check pieces of bearing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pieces of bearing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Whilst I would say that the seal replacement is a good thing, it depends on how long the car was running before they replaced the seal.

Suggestion
If the car was run for too long without replacing the seal the oil would have gradually seeped out of the chamber, thus stressing the shaft as the bearings will not be properly lubricated.

If it makes you feel any better I have 997 C4s with 21k on the clock IMS seal changed at 7k, the car has never leaked or used oil since, quiet and smooth on start up etc.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking to purchase a 2001 Model 996. Lots of Main dealer and Specialist history. In the last 2000 miles it has had an oil leak investigated and there is a bill for RMS and intermediate Shaft oil seal. My question - is a leak on the IMS oil seal and indication of bearing wear and therefore imminent or future failure ?
Hi,
Whilst not being an expert at this I have been concerned about the problems of IMS shaft and bearing failure. See the thread below for more information:

Whilst I would say that the seal replacement is a good thing, it depends on how long the car was running before they replaced the seal. If the car was run for too long without replacing the seal the oil would have gradually seeped out of the chamber, thus stressing the shaft as the bearings will not be properly lubricated. This will lead to the bearings running at too high a temperature, leading to potential bearing failure, dispersion in the engine unit and potentially large bills for engine rebuilds.
You can tell if this process has started in a wide variety of cases by having the engine oil checked for pieces of bearing - but this does not mean it will not go if there is nothing there as they can go at any time, and any issues with the seal must be properly investigated.
Do not do anything until you speak to Baz at Hartech. They are the specialists in this field and will properly advise you...
Good luck mate

If it makes you feel any better I have 997 C4s with 21k on the clock IMS seal changed at 7k, the car has never leaked or used oil since, quiet and smooth on start up etc. Also had RMS done at 475 miles, no probs since. I can only assume when the seal is renewed it's as good as new. Noticed what Hendry said about the bearing being starved but not inclined to agree with his theory (no offence Hendry) although I stand to be corrected. I think if oil is passing through the seal from inside to out the bearing must be getting lubed unless I am not understanding the mechanism properly. Hopefully someone like Baz will be along shortly to clear it up.
Regards,
Rob.
Thanks for the reply so far. Been looking into this further and at schematic diagrams. It would seem that I may have misunderstood the design of the oil seal. I assumed that the Intermediate shaft exited the crank case and therefore fun through this seal. I therefore also assumed that freeplay in the bearing could cause a subsequent seal leak. Not so in my opinion. The end of the shaft and associated bearing is internal and the oil seal part of a flat access cover with three mountings. So just an oil weap from a cover ???
