When my Turbo's engine compartment lid refused to open the tech used some plastic wedges to open up a gap between the rear bumper cover and the taillight to find the release and snag it with a thin metal hook to open the engine compartment lid but I don't know what's involved in getting access to this release with the 996.

A mouse apparently chewed on the wire attached to the rear latch lock while the P car was seated in the garage for several weeks - oh by the way caught mickey using a trap under the P :-)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've done some research on rear engine trunk lock/latches and unfortunately couldn't find what this wire is for so I've provided some pictures. A mouse apparently chewed on the wire attached to the rear latch lock while the P car was seated in the garage for several weeks - oh by the way caught mickey using a trap under the P :-) Planning to just insulate using electrical tape BUT what is this wire for??? Sensor, electric lock?

POST 2Original post

my engine compartment door will not open. my battery is fine and but when I pull on the switch it sounds like its going to go, but it does not release. the front opens fine with no issues. am I missing something ?

POST 3Original post

That's your rear lock actuator. I believe it also contains microswitch that alerts you if you leave the rear lid open. The 12V is grounded while open and a "open latch" indicator should show on your dash cluster.

Quote: Reads like the solenoid that works the latch catch is working -- the noise you hear when you pull on the switch -- but the mechanical linkage has failed. There is an emergency release cable. When my Turbo's engine compartment lid refused to open the tech used some plastic wedges to open up a gap between the rear bumper cover and the taillight to find the release and snag it with a thin metal hook to open the engine compartment lid but I don't know what's involved in getting access to this release with the 996. My advice would be to take your car to a qualified Porsche repair facility (dealer or indy) and someone there should know how to get at the emergency release. Once the lid is open then the tech can close the latch manually (leaving the lid open) and work the switch and confirm what is going on. Or he might have to remove the rear bumper cover or in some way expose the lid latch hardware in order to fully view the workings but he will know what is necessary.
