I use the car every day and so far am averaging just under 2000 fun filled miles per month.

My 03 Targa has just passed 40k mark & I have yet to see the digi read out dip below maximum between oil changes - hope the gauge works properly!!

Hi there,my c4s has covered 64000 miles and uses about .6 0f a liter of oil on the motorway,it runs fine in every respect no blue smoke,im told its within its tolorences.my left exhaust is sooting up though, but im beginning to think that its not connected to the oil consumption, maybe overfueling.i have been told that all the engines will differ with oil consumption depending how they were run in??i would definatly have mine checked if it started to use more.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I've had my car a few months now (02 model 996 tip) and have covered about 8000 miles. I had a major service at 36000 miles(4000 miles ago) and it looks like I am due for some oil as the level is at the bottom of the acceptable range.
I do drive the car hard when I have chance and get the usual bit of smoke after a spirited drive but nothing untoward as I have been reassured by many kind members.
My question is, is this kind of oil usage normal. How much do other people go through. I use the car every day and so far am averaging just under 2000 fun filled miles per month.
I am grateful for any advice.
Thanks
Mark
Seems a lot of oil usage to me.
I think you can normally expect about 400ml every 4/5,000 miles. If you assume the engine oil was at the full mark after the service and you are now at the minimum, would that equate to appx 2 litres which is too high IMO for 4,000 miles.
Do you do a lot of short journeys where the car doesn't have time to warm up? But having said this that shouldn't account for that kind of oil usage I wouldn't have thought. Something isn't right.
I found that my 997 coughs a little smoke if the car has been started, say to get it out of the garage, switched off, then started again to put the car back in. The smoke appears if I don't go out in the car after that for say a few days or so, but only on start up. :dont know:
Ah, there you go then. It's nearly 2lites on the 997 at 400ml a mark and I think there is 4.
Still a litre is a lot in 4,000 miles IMO, but what do I know. :dont know:
Just to be really picky, on a 996 facelift car the difference between min and max is approx 1.25 litres, each mark being 0.2 litres.
The maximum consumption quoted is 0.5 litres per 1000km. Personally, I'd be in a state of panic if it was anything like that!
Edit: I never had to top up between oil changes on my old C2. (Changed every 6000 miles). It would only drop 1 bar on the gauge in that time.
It did concern me a little but the car is running well and there are no pools of oil on the drive way.
I'll top up tonight and see how I get on.
How much oil does anyone else use?
My 03 Targa has just passed 40k mark & I have yet to see the digi read out dip below maximum between oil changes - hope the gauge works properly!!

..my 01 C4 remains on the top mark between services. 60,000 mls. 15,000 mls in the last year....can't keep out of the damn thing.
Quite a tribute to the engineering when the oil specified is so thin, and that's cold.

Mark, I am of the opinion that they do not use hardly any if any at all oil between services.
I will cast my eyes over it when you pop over, if you are losing a lot of oil it must be going somewhere, whether that is into the water system, a leaky RCG or RMS these things will show.
Couple of questions, what oil are you using, are there any oil patches where the car stands, do you ever smell burning oil especially after a spirited drive and are there any odd ticking noises?
