So a mouse or two has snuck past my cabin filter, built a stinky nest inside by blower and died or left. This has happened to me now with 3 cars, I am in the market for 12 cats. From removing the filter panel I see droppings and nest material atop the cage fan. I want to remove it, the vents and give everything a thorough cleaning with Nature's miracle.
Anyhow, the factory manual seems to indicate a full bare metal tear down of the entire HVAC assembly. I am hoping it is as simple as removing the passenger side airbag (us car), the glovebox and have access. Does anyone have details for access without a teardown?
That's a bummer. Did you check YouTube for any possible videos? That's always my first go-to.

One thought, why not approach it like a medical problem? Clean out all you can reach as much as possible, spray into the system with Lysol or equivalent germ and viral killing spray or even an active enzyme spray. Replace the filter and try it out. You can always go for the most radical surgery but maybe some physical therapy is enough, just a thought. You might not be able to get every square inch clean anyhow. Of course if you believe a dead carcass is in the system then disregard my advise, good luck.
Thanks guys I decided to bite the bullet and see what I could do. So you can actually get the bottom
cap
of the blower removed from inside the car. There is a foam rubber top that covers that accessible by removing for plastic screw off fasteners. I then was able to pull the bottom of the squirrel cage off. And there was a lot of junk that came out. So it looks like the main part of the nest is inside the squirrel cage. I then went from the top. Remove removed the cowling and the windshield wipers and the cabin air filter housing. Sort of a pain but it allowed me much better access with my vacuum. I then used my vacuum from the top and sucked most of everything out of the inside of the squirrel cage. My
next
step though is thinking that they might’ve gotten into the Vents. I am just trying to figure out how to get those suckers off they are also a puzzle.

So much for my post, yikes! That's a lot of work, good luck, PS I had to get a vent replaced when I got my car, it had a flaw. There is a little pull tab (at the bottom if I remember) EDIT OK I just looked they are inside the vent about an inch in on the bottom. You'll see the opening and a metal ear with a hole at the top. I'm pretty sure that was the tab. If you gently lift it with a pick I believe that is the release. Be gentle in case my memory of exact location is wrong but I'm confident that a lift tab is what you are looking for, I did the replacement myself with a dealer supplied copy of that page of the factory manual.
Nice job dma550!

Thanks Boris, one of mine is cracked / broken but settles in when I don't try to pull it out. I may just leave these alone as most of the material blew out already (in my face, oh the insult!)
Good idea as mine was covered under warranty but I would assume a new unit is priced ridiculously.
I had a 1988 Fiero GT this happened to !! I couldn’t use the heat or AC . I cleaned out the blower cage like you and soaked it with disinfectant. To get inside the vents I used a small plastic hose about 1/2 “ that I was able to couple to my shop vac and I feed that in through the vents . It got clogged a lot with nest material but after a while I was able to get almost all of it . I’ve never had my
cayman
apart like that so I don’t know how similar it is . I was able to turn my fan on in the car and spay disinfectant in it while it was blowing which forced it though the duct work . It did eventually fix the issue . Again this was with a 88 Fiero . I know it’s different but maybe there could be a similar approach with the
Cayman
